The C-perative Educatin / Internship Mdel The Mdel is based n the principle that an academic prgram cmbined with wrk experience in alternating terms, is relevant t, and desirable fr, effective emplyment preparatin. Wrk term emplyment, which varies frm sectr t sectr, allws students t acquire experience in their areas f career interest, while academic terms are devted primarily t fundamental and theretical studies. These practical experiences and academic studies cmplement ne anther. The mtivatin, respnsibility, and pprtunity fr insight gained thrugh cperative educatin / internship can be f significant value t the student's future. The cncept enables thse with a career rientatin t becme full-time students f their subject, bth during the academic terms and during the related wrk terms, within a structure f rganized purpse and serius study. The Study and Wrk Sequence The mdel, in mst prgrams, requires students t alternate perids f study with perids f emplyment. The perid f emplyment is called a wrk term and is nrmally fur mnths in length. C-p and Internship Prgrams Currently, we have 34 c-p prgrams at Sheridan, with students available frm a range f prgrams including: arts and animatin, business, health, applied cmputing and engineering sciences. What is a Qualifying Wrk Term? A qualifying placement must be: a minimum f 360 hurs fr C-p Diplma Prgrams, r 14 cnsecutive full-time weeks (r a minimum f 420 hurs in ttal) fr Internship Degree Prgrams must be a requirement fr graduatin frm a qualifying prgram which meets the fllwing criteria: The prgram frmally integrates academic studies with wrk experience; Each wrk situatin is develped and/r apprved by the educatinal institutin as suitable; The student is engaged in prductive wrk rather than merely bserving; The student receives remuneratin fr the wrk experience; The student's prgress n the jb is mnitred by the eligible institutin; The c-p student's perfrmance n the jb is supervised and evaluated by the emplyer; The ttal wrk experience cmpnent f the prgram is n less than 30% and n mre than 75% f the time spent in academic study. Hiring a C-p / Internship Student Students can be hired in ne f tw ways - hired directly by yur cmpany r thrugh Sheridan s Cntract Services. Cntract Services gives emplyers the ability t get the benefit f emplying a c-p student, but n a cntract basis - giving yu mre flexibility in hiring. If yu chse, yu can interview students at yur lcatin, r at either f ur campuses. We will set up the interview schedule and cnfirm it with yu. Ontari Tax Credit What wrk placements qualify fr the C-perative Educatin Tax Credit? Excerpt frm the Gvernment f Ontari C-perative Educatin Tax Credit 4014 bulletin January 2010: T qualify, a wrk placement must invlve a student wh is enrlled at an eligible educatinal institutin and perfrms emplyment duties fr an eligible emplyer under a qualifying c-perative educatin prgram that is ffered by their schl. The wrk placement must meet the fllwing cnditins: The placement has been develped r apprved by the eligible educatinal institutin, The student must be engaged in prductive wrk during the placement and nt be just an bserver, The wrk placement is: nt less than eight mnths r mre than sixteen mnths, fr a qualifying internship prgram r at least 10 weeks fr all ther qualifying c-perative educatin prgrams, The student is paid fr the wrk perfrmed during the placement, The emplyer supervises and evaluates the student's jb perfrmance during the placement and The educatinal institutin mnitrs the student's prgress in the wrk placement. Cntract Services and WSIB cverage Mst emplyers in Ontari are required t include student wrkers, bth paid and vlunteer, in their WSIB cverage. The nly exceptin is when yu have hired a student cntract frm Sheridan Cllege thrugh ur Cntract Services prgram. Emplyer and Student Expectatins Partnership Principles f C-perative Educatin / Internship Prgrams There are fur partners in the Cperative Educatin and Internship Prgrams at Sheridan: Students, Emplyers, the C-perative Educatin and Internship Office (CEIO) and, Academic Departments. The success f the prgram relies upn all parties understanding their respnsibilities. Every effrt is made by the CEIO t ensure students have a psitive learning experience while n the wrk term. Smetimes industry trends and emplyer demands shape psting and placement activity. The CEIO must respnd accrdingly and s must students expectatins. Learning cmes in many different frms and it is smetimes a requirement t adjust ne s expectatins given market and emplyer requirements. The Emplyer T increase the student s prductivity and facilitate learning, it is recmmended that emplyers: Prvide viable psitins relevant t the varius fields f study taught at Sheridan. A jb pprtunity must be apprved by an Advisr as a creditable jb that fulfills the requirement f a student's prgram. Jb Descriptins Represent the duties and the respnsibilities f the advertised psitins by presenting a cmprehensive written descriptin f the jb duties, qualificatins, and skill level required fr the psitins advertised. Advertising the jb Jb will be psted n line with a prescribed pening and clsing date. When the jb clses (usually 3-4 days) applicant resumes will be frwarded electrnically r by curier t the emplyer. Interviews C-p / Internship Emplyer Manual December 2012 6

CEIO will set up an electrnic interview schedule fr students t respnd t; hwever, emplyers may set this up themselves independently f CEIO. The CEIO will make the Offer f Emplyment t the student. In rder t ensure the best match is made, generally, the student is given 48 hurs t make the final decisin n accepting r declining the psitin. Hwever, if circumstances require the emplyer t have a respnse prir t that time, the CEIO will advise the student. Wrk Term Accmmdate a visit, whenever pssible, by the apprpriate Advisr during the student's wrk term. Optimally, this will include visits t bth student and supervisr: Advise the students with regards t all issues f cnfidentiality in the wrkplace and ensure that any nn-disclsure agreements are signed prir t the cmmencement f wrk. Prepare the student s c-wrkers and ther staff fr the arrival f the student. Prvide the student with an rientatin t the wrkplace, including an verview f the rganizatin (e.g. missin statement, prducts, etc.), physical layut, relevant persnnel, safety practices, and the duties r tasks expected during the wrk term. Prvide a supervisr fr the c-p and internship student wh will versee the student s wrk and discuss expectatins fr the wrk term with the student and, n a regular basis, give the student feedback n hw he/she is ding, including areas f strength and areas which require imprvement. Ensure that jbs and places f wrk are in cmpliance with all relevant gvernment statutes and legislatin. Cmplete a "Student Evaluatin by Emplyer" frm and submit it t CEIO, with a cpy t the student, prir t the final day f the wrk term. A student wh desn t receive this evaluatin will nt receive credit fr that wrk term; Cnsult the Advisr prir t undertaking disciplinary actin r dismissal f a student. Whenever pssible, infrm the student and the Advisr prir t the end f the wrk term f the intentin t re-hire the student fr the next wrk term. In the event f an additinal wrk term, it is expected that an emplyer will prvide enhanced wrk that reflects the grwth and knwledge f the student. The Student Students are representatives f Sheridan and shuld cnduct themselves accrdingly in a prfessinal manner. Students must abide by all c-p and internship plicies and prcedures. On the jb: Relate classrm learning t the wrkplace benefits student and emplyer. Exercise ethical wrkplace cnduct and represent Sheridan with a standard f cnduct and perfrmance which will further enhance the relatinship between Sheridan and the emplyer. Abide by the plicies and prcedures f yur emplyer. Accept cnstructive feedback, suggestins fr imprvement in a psitive manner. Reslve prblems r issues that may arise in a prmpt, prfessinal manner. Be a prductive and respnsible emplyee and take initiative as apprpriate. Advise the emplyer and Internship advisr f any cncerns r prblems with wrk assignments r envirnmental issues as sn as they arise. Set realistic expectatins and gals that will encurage self imprvement and benefit the emplyer. The Cperative Educatin and Internship Office Prvides the delivery and evaluatin f C-p and Internship preparatry and wrk term curricula Develps jb pprtunities and secures ptential emplyers Arranges recruiting interviews fr c-p and internship students prvides prfessinal career guidance t students Maintains c-p and internship student recrds Mnitrs c-p and internship wrk terms by visiting r telephning students and emplyers n the jb Wrks with the c-p and internship students befre, during and after their wrk terms t help maximize the students whle educatin/career experience CEIO at Sheridan invlves a cmpetitive emplyment prcess. While CEIO makes every effrt t assist students in gaining emplyment, there is n guarantee that every student will becme emplyed thrugh the c-p/internship emplyment prcess. CEIO is respnsible fr the review and apprval f C-p/Internship jb pstings, but CEIO des nt assume respnsibility fr endrsing the cmpanies. The Academic Schl The Academic Department is respnsible fr all academic cmpnents f the C-p r Degree prgram. A CEIO Student Advisr wrks clsely with each Academic Prgram Crdinatr t ensure standards are established and relevant infrmatin is shared. Emplyment Agreements Wrk term emplyment agreements are between the student and the emplyer. Sheridan is nt a party t these agreements and assumes n financial r legal respnsibility with regard t events r actins by either party that affect the emplyment situatin fr any c-p student (e.g. layffs, intellectual prperty issues, cnfidentiality agreements, strikes, etc.). Shuld the need arise, students are encuraged t seek whatever advice and/r guidance abut their agreements they feel is necessary. C-p / Internship Emplyer Manual December 2012 8

Sheridan students are available fr 4-mnth wrk terms year rund, with wrk terms beginning in January, May and September. 6. What infrmatin shuld I include in my jb descriptin? Yur jb descriptin shuld include: A descriptive jb title, like Junir Systems Administratr, Human Resurces Assistant, Marketing Crdinatr, Pharmacy Technician, etc. An verview f yur cmpany, department r team. Please include infrmatin that prvides helpful details abut duties and respnsibilities, and any training the student will receive. A brief descriptin f the wrk envirnment; include infrmatin n items including crprate culture, nrmal wrk attire, etc. The key skills and qualificatins fr which yu are lking. Any special requirements: shift wrk, frequent vertime, driver s license, use f persnal vehicle, etc. Yur lcatin. Include ther relevant infrmatin such as: clsest majr intersectin, prximity t public transit rutes, GO, train, TTC, etc. Number f hurs per week and whether vertime is expected. 7. When is the deadline t advertise a c-p jb? Yu can advertise c-p pprtunities any time. The earlier in the semester yu pst yur jb, the mre students are available. But it s never t late there are always students lking fr jbs, even after the wrk term has started. 8. Where d I interview? Can I d phne r n-campus interviews? Yu can interview students at yur lcatin, by phne r at either f Sheridan s campuses, just let us knw yur preference. 9. Can I hire mre than ne student per wrk term? Yes, yu can hire as many c-p students each term as yu need. We have many qualified students available in a wide range f prgrams. With such a wide variety f skills, ur students can benefit many departments within yur cmpany. 10. Can I cntact students directly abut interviews r jb ffers? The C-p Office is here t assist yu thrugh the prcess f interviewing and hiring c-p students, which can be time-cnsuming. We re happy t schedule and set up interviews and present jb ffers t the students n yur behalf. 11. What d I d nce I ve hired a student? Once yu ve hired a student, yu may want t discuss student and emplyer expectatins, hurs, training/rientatin schedule, prject assignments, etc. Frm ur experience, we find it s helpful fr bth parties t discuss sme f these areas befre the student s first day n the jb. The first day is always full f ther new infrmatin and faces, which can be verwhelming fr bth student and emplyer. 2. What if I dn t have the budget t hire but wuld like t prvide wrk experience anyway?
