Trinitas School of Nursing faculty shares knowledge/expertise; gets grant for Sim Jr Nancy Innella, MSN, CNOR, CNE, pediatric nursing faculty at Trinitas School of Nursing presented her abstract on Educating LPN-to-RN students online on Leadership & Management at the Professional Nurse Educators Group Conference held last fall in Baltimore, MD. Ms. Innella teaches NURE 291, a blended course on leadership and management dedicated to LPNs who are completing the RN program. She also coordinates the leadership and management component of NURE 232, the last nursing course in the generic RN program. The poster presentation generated much interest from other attendees. Ms. Innella s grant proposal for the acquisition of Sim Jr, a high-fidelity pediatric patient simulator from Laerdal Medical Corporation, was funded last fall by the Elizabethtown Healthcare Foundation. Sim Jr will be used for pediatric simulations by NURE 231 students to reinforce and enhance their learning in pediatric nursing. Congratulations, Nancy!

NJLN Scholarship Awardees Monina Franco-Tantuico, BSN, BSMT, CCRN, Learning/ Simulation Center coordinator, was awarded a scholarship by the New Jersey League for Nursing (NJLN) during the NJLN Gala Reception held at the Pines Manor on November 4, 2011. Monina is finishing her graduate studies in nursing at the College of Saint Elizabeth this Spring. Shown on the picture (right) with Monina is her husband, Noel, who, together with three of their four children, joined Monina in celebrating this coveted scholarship award. Also the recipients of NJLN scholarship awards are two (2) Trinitas School of Nursing students, Katherine Casas and Theresa Lannino, both NURE 231 students at the time they received the scholarship. They are currently in their last nursing course, NURE 232. In order to enhance academic and professional development, the NJLN provides scholarships to qualified in-state residents who are pursuing or advancing their career as a professional nurse. We thank the NJLN for their continuing commitment to New Jersey s nursing students and congratulations to Monina, Katherine and Theresa!

P. Andes, 2011 NJLN Nurse Recognition Awardee Ms. Phoebe Andes, one of the School s Learning/Simulation Center lab instructors, was honored by the New Jersey League for Nursing with the NJLN Nurse Recognition Award at the 2011 Gala Reception held in November at the Pines Manor. Ms. Andes was recognized for her contributions to nursing education. She was the founder and first president of the Philippine Nurses Association in New Jersey (PNA-NJ) and the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA)and continues to be an active member of PNA-NJ s executive board. Ms. Andes is a highly experienced nurse educator in maternal and child health and has taught extensively in several nursing programs in NJ. Upon her retirement, Ms. Andes came to work at the School as a lab instructor. Retirement did not deter Ms. Andes from pursuing other interests and she, together with a group of experienced Filipino nurse educators, established the Pinelands School for Practical Nursing and Allied Health and became its first director of nursing education. She travels extensively and volunteers in educational and humanitarian missions to the Philippines. Congratulations, Phoebe!

letter Trinitas School of Nursing Celebrates NLN COE Re-designation The School hosted a reception on January 11, 2012 at the THB Conference Center to celebrate its re-designation as a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in nursing education for the years 2011 2015. The School received its initial three-year COE designation in September 2008. Both designations are in the category of Creating Environments that Enhance Student Learning and Professional Development. The award was presented by Dr. Beverly Malone, NLN CEO and Catherine Schultz, NLN President to Dean M. E. Kelley and TSON faculty members who attended the September 2011 NLN Education Summit held in Orlando, FL. See picture on the left. The reception was attended by faculty, student representatives, Trinitas Regional Medical Center senior administration and members of the Board of Trustees, representatives from Elizabethtown Healthcare Foundation, Summit Area Public Foundation and Trinitas Health Foundation. Also in attendance were Dr. M. McMenamin, UCC President and Dr. M. Lown, UCC VPAA and representatives from the Union County College Student Services, and other community partners and friends. letter Faculty Presentations in Spring 2012 Faculty to attend the NLN ACES Workshop Dean Marybeth Kelley and Assistant Dean Teresita Proctor will be presenting a concurrent session at the New Jersey League for Nursing (NJLN) Convention in Atlantic City on March 30, 2012 at the Tropicana Casino & Resort. The title of the presentation is Integrating Simulation into a Nursing Program. Rose Santee, Associate Dean, together with T. Proctor and Monina Franco-Tantuico, LSC coordinator, will also be presenting a poster at the NJLN convention titled The Learning/Simulation Center: Creating an Environment for Patient Safety in Nursing Education. Janine Graf-Kirk, NURE 232 faculty, will be going to Atlanta, GA, on March 27 31, 2012 to present a poster titled Concept Mapping: Connecting Critical Thinking with Clinical Practice at the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses Convention Several faculty members will be attending the NJLN Convention pre-conference workshop on Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES): Innovation in Teaching. The workshop is cohosted by the NLN and NJLN and will be presented by national experts in nursing curriculum innovation and gerontological nursing. Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors guides the teaching of nursing students to provide competent, individualized and humanistic care to older adults. According to the NLN the workshop will address the complexity of decision making about care for the older adult in a variety of home, institutional and community-based settings. By attending this workshop, faculty can begin and sustain change related to teaching care of older adults within their courses and the curriculum in general.
