3 About SUNY Empire State College SUNY Empire State College is one of the 13 arts and sciences colleges within the State University of New York, awarding associate, bachelor s and master s degrees. Offices of the college can be found in more than 35 communities throughout New York state. The college also is the largest online provider in the SUNY system. SUNY Empire State College counts more than 73,000 graduates since its founding in 1971 and annually enrolls more than 20,000 adult students. Resources and Academic Support Empire State College recognizes that adult learners face the challenge of pursuing their studies while meeting work, family and community commitments. The college offers a number of ways to study, including, but not limited to, a variety of online courses and clinical learning experiences based in the student s community. Learning resources include course information, community discussion spaces, access to library resources and academic support services. In addition to these web-based resources, students can take advantage of more than 35 physical locations across New York state, which provide local administrative support. A master s or doctorally prepared mentor serves as a resource and guide from acceptance into the program until graduation. Students work with their mentor to define goals and identify credit options, incorporating prior college course work, as well as college-level learning gained from work and life experience. Through the wonders of online, distance learning, we no longer have to ask for days off from work to attend class. We now have access to a virtual library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without leaving our homes. I conducted discussions with my instructors and fellow students, some as far away as Austria, without regard to time zones, oceans or borders. Patricia Green 11 SUNY Empire State College nursing programs are affordable and flexible, serving nursing students throughout New York state. Nursing students and alumni live and work throughout New York state. 3
