Greenville Tech has utilized simulation for over 15 years and included high-fidelity simulators since Mike has taken the role of Simulation Coordinator at Greenville Tech and coordinates the use of 21 simulators in all health science and nursing courses including EMT-Paramedic, dental, radiology, physical therapy, nursing, etc. He is responsible for faculty training, programming, maintenance and facilitation when necessary. Mike is also assisting with the development of Greenville Tech s dedicated human patient simulation center on the main campus. 2 Betsy Bencken, BS, MS Clinical Instructor Director of Operations Center for Virtual Care UC Davis Health System 2315 Stockton Blvd, Room 1514 Sacramento, CA Discipline: Hospital Betsy Bencken, BS, MS, and CMPE candidate, is Director of Operations at the Center for Virtual Care at the University of California, Davis. She has had appointments at the University of California, Davis in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Pathology, and Radiology. Ms. Bencken is an experienced instructor with a multi-faceted background in administration, academic education, research laboratory management and has worked with the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. She has published and presented within the US and internationally in the area of simulation with a focus on simulation center development and management as well as clinically on a hybrid approach to education using pelvic and birthing trainers. Ms. Bencken is currently a member of Society for Simulation in Health Care (IMSH), the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM) and the Medical Group Management Association. 3 Nathan E. Brent, RN, BSN Saint Joseph Hospital and Medical Center 250 West Thomas Road Phoenix, AZ Discipline: Hospital Nathan E. Brent has been a nurse for over ten years, specializing in adult critical care and clinical education. He is currently employed as a Nursing Education and Simulation Specialist for St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center. Located in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center is a 743 bed facility and is home to the world renown Barrow s Neurological Institute, specializing in Neuroscience care and level I trauma, being the only level I trauma center accredited by the American Colleges of Surgeons in the State of Arizona. Nathan currently operates a 3000 sq. ft. simulation facility, delivering education to resident physicians, registered nurses, nurse externs and nursing students. 4 Nancy L. Wilson, RN, BS Coordinator Wine Country Regional Simulator Center Discipline: Nursing Nancy L. Wilson is a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in Health Science. She spent many years as a nursing manager in both in-patient and out patient capacities. Nancy s role at the Wine Country Regional Simulation Center is Simulation Coordinator. She is responsible for all of the operations of the eight-mannequin simulation center including training, moulage, scheduling, maintenance and operation of the mannequins. 5 Melinda Armstrong, RN, MSN Novant Presbyterian Health, Queens University of Charlotte 1901 East Fifth Street Charlotte, NC Discipline: Nursing Melinda Armstrong s nursing career began in a level III Intensive Care Nursery and later progressed to pediatric homecare for technology dependent children. Melinda is now on the faculty of the ASN program at Queens University of Charlotte, teaching Nursing Fundamentals to approximately 150 students each year. She is also the nursing school s Lab Coordinator and was responsible for overseeing the design, construction, and implementation of the University s Patient Simulation Lab throughout the entire nursing program. 6 Jackie Langford, BFA, FF/LP Director of Healthcare Simulation Healthcare Simulation Department Collin College, Central Park Campus 2200 West University Drive McKinney, TX Discipline: Multi-disciplinary (Background was Fire/EMS) Jackie Langford has served in the fire and EMS profession for over 22 years, serving as a firefighter/paramedic. Early in this career, he was offered the opportunity to help teach some classes, and in doing so, found his passion in teaching and helping others to learn. He began a second/concurrent career in fire and EMS education and has served in that capacity for over 21 years. Mr. Langford now serves as Director of Healthcare Simulation for Collin College's Health Sciences and Emergency Services Division, and has dedicated himself to promoting realistic simulation in all the healthcare fields. 7 Mentor Alyson Knapp Clinical Instructor Coordinator & Curriculum Development University of Arizona, College of Medicine 1501 N. Campbell Ave. PO Box Tuscon, AZ Discipline: Multi-disciplinary (Background is surgery) Alyson Knapp is involved in the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, paramedics and community health personnel at the University of Arizona s simulation lab. The University of Arizona s lab is multi-disciplinary and includes users from the department of Surgery (including urology and neurosurgery), Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine (including pulmonology and critical care), Family Practice, Pediatrics (including neonatology and critical care), Radiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Alyson s primary duties include teaching, curriculum development, research, repair and maintenance as well as the overall administration and financial duties.! 8 Mentor Melanie K. Miller, R.N., M.S.N., C.C.R.N. Anne Arundel Community College 101 College Parkway Arnold, MD Discipline: EMS Melanie Miller is the Department Chair of the paramedic program at Anne Arundel Community College. She holds a Masters of Science degree in Nursing and is a Nationally Registered Paramedic. Melanie has many years of professional experience in Pre-hospital and Emergency medicine, education and management. 10 METI Mentor Dr. Stefan Mönk, DEAA Vice-President AQAI GmbH Simulationszentrum Mainz Wernher-von-Braun-Straße Mainz smonk@meti.com Discipline: Medicine Dr. Stefan Mönk is an anesthesiologist and a specialist in Emergency Medicine. He also holds an additional diploma from the European Academy of Anesthesiologists (DEAA). For several years, he has worked in the German Air Rescue Service and has been Chief Emergency Physician of the City of Mainz, Germany. In 1997 Dr. Stefan Mönk co-founded the Mainz Simulation Center of the department of Anesthesiology at the University of Mainz in Germany, where he worked as senior consultant in anesthesia. This was the first center that used full-scale, physiologically model driven simulators in continental Europe. At this center, he began to actively pursue his genuine interest in Medical Education with simulation to promote patient safety. This also started the beginning of his development in becoming an expert in medical simulation. During that time, he initiated and conducted numerous simulation classes either as a facilitator or course director. Thereafter, he focused on developing simulation education and contributed his knowledge and experience by creating courses to train-the-trainer for doctors and staff. In 2005, Dr. Stefan Mönk joined AQAI Simulation Center in Mainz, a privately owned company, where he presently holds the position of Vice President. His area of responsibilities encompasses production, research and development. AQAI is the international support center for METI, manufacturer and world leader of cutting-edge simulation technology. He is currently working on several projects for AQAI and METI in the business expansion and development of education technology and content. He regularly provides for METI international clinical training and consulting. Dr. Stefan Mönk is also an active member of several organizations: 1. METI s modeling consortium and educational faculty; 2. European Society of Intensive Care Medicine where he transformed PACT training program (Patient-Centered Acute Care Training) to a simulation curriculum (PACT Simulation Learning Module); 3. SESAM (Society in Europe for Simulation Medicine) for which he was President from 2003 to SESAM held the annual meeting in Mainz Simulation Center in 2009; 4. SSH (Society for Simulation in Healthcare) and has acted as Abstract Chair, Workshop Chair and Program Chair during its meetings;

11 5. DGAI (German Society for Anesthesia and Intensive Care) for which he coordinates the initiative for simulation in all German Medical Universities. He is presently Simulation Program manager of its Education and Simulation Committee member of the working groups for undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development in anesthesia; and, 6. HPSN Europe (Human Patient Simulation Network) for which he was co-host since Dr. Stefan Mönk has authored, co-authored and contributed to the following: 1. The German requirements for Simulation in Anesthesia of DGAI; 2. Chapters in publications relevant to simulation in medicine: Richard Kyle, W. Bosseau Murray (Eds.): Clinical Simulation, Academic Press, 2007 and Richard H. Riley (Ed.): A Manual of Simulation in Healthcare, Oxford University Press, 2008; 3. Austral-Asian College of Emergency Medicine development of nationwide training for emergency physicians; and, 4. Global simulation and education initiatives contribution. Dr. Stefan Mönk s main professional interest and focus is essentially to positively improve and impact the level of Medical Education for ultimately promoting healthcare and patient safety through simulation. Human Factors and Crisis Resource Management are equally important topics to him, as well as learning and teaching traditional medical content. The use of technology to achieve his goal should never be an end in itself; however, in his view it is certainly instrumental and absolutely essential.
