Stadards of Scholarship ad Professioalism Achievig the missio ad goals of the Uiversity of Chicago ad Chicago Booth depeds o the maer i which each member of our commuity coducts himself or herself, both withi the school ad whe represetig Chicago Booth exterally. Classroom, extracurricular, ad professioal relatioships must be fouded o the values ad priciples of mutual respect ad acceptace, ad also o the affirmatio of the legal rights of all members of our commuity. As members of the Chicago Booth commuity, studets (alog with admiistrators, staff, ad faculty) are expected to coduct themselves ad commuicate i a maer cosistet with the values of academic, persoal, ad professioal itegrity. This icludes, but is ot limited to, professioal coduct with faculty, other studets, ad staff through the completio of course requiremets, classroom behavior, ad extracurricular activities sposored by Chicago Booth or Chicago Booth approved studet groups, corporate recruiters, alumi, other costituet groups, ad members of the studet body. The Chicago Booth commuity is committed to buildig ad sustaiig a eviromet i which its members ca freely work together, both iside ad outside the classroom. We wat to promote ad capitalize o our rich diversity as a source of itellectual ad iterpersoal opeess, while recogizig that differeces betwee us will always be preset. All members of our commuity must be treated with the same level of respect regardless of sex, race, cultural heritage, religious practice, ad/or sexual idetity. Each member of our commuity is resposible for the protectio of the digity ad the rights of other members. To that ed, the highest level of respect is expected of all who are part of the Chicago Booth commuity. Disrespectful behavior i ay form will ot be tolerated. Members of the Chicago Booth commuity should cosider carefully the cosequeces that his/her actios may have o him/herself, others, ad the reputatio of Chicago Booth. Behavior deemed iappropriate may be cause for discipliary review. This sectio icludes, but is ot limited to, the stadards of scholarship ad professioalism to which each Chicago Booth studet must adhere. Violatio of these stadards may be cause for discipliary review. Specific Stadards of Scholarship Chicago Booth s Learig Eviromet The educatioal missio of Chicago Booth is to prepare future busiess leaders. The ability ad willigess to lear reside i the idividual. But very high levels of learig ca be achieved oly if all members of the Chicago Booth commuity uderstad ad respect their mutual obligatios. Each commuity member defies the quality of this learig eviromet through his or her daily actios ad choices. The learig eviromet exteds beyod the classroom to the myriad iteractios ad workig relatioships of the larger commuity of studets, faculty, ad staff. Four cosideratios shape Chicago Booth s perspective of the ideal learig eviromet: 1. Respect for the idividual. There is a deep respect for the idividuality of each studet ad faculty member. Through a wide choice of electives, access to detailed course descriptios withi the olie Curriculum Guide, ad the biddig system to select courses, studets ca satisfy their particular iterests ad learig styles. Likewise, faculty members each have the opportuity to decide what they teach ad how. There is o official Chicago Booth pedagogy for the classroom. Teachers are ecouraged to tap their ow idividual talets ad experieces. Chicago Booth believes studets preparig for sigificat busiess careers beefit from exposure to differet learig approaches. 2. The classroom as a place of learig. Classrooms at Chicago Booth are a place for learig rather tha teachig. Learig is ot a spectator sport; Studet Hadbook 2013 14 Regulatios, Policies, ad Procedures 5

powerful learig experieces require the commitmet of both teachers ad studets. The role of the faculty is either to etertai or to wi popularity cotests. Their chief aim is to formulate, orgaize, ad commuicate kowledge. The role of the studets is to participate actively i the learig process rather tha cosume kowledge passively. 3. Persoal itegrity. Both faculty ad studets are subject to the highest stadards of persoal itegrity i their iteractios with Chicago Booth colleagues ad with exteral costituecies. Itellectual itegrity is at the heart of the academic process. Dishoesty threates its survival. All participats are expected to adhere scrupulously to the orms established for stadards of scholarship. Equally destructive of the academic process is itolerace of other people s ideas, aalyses, ad perspectives. 4. Cotiuous improvemet. Chicago Booth is committed to cotiuous improvemet of all aspects of the school s learig eviromet. Faculty members are ecouraged to view the classroom as a laboratory for the testig of cuttig-edge, evolvig kowledge ad techiques. The cotiuous refiemet of importat ad iovative ideas is preferred over the flawless presetatio of outdated material. Oe way to measure the key elemets of the learig eviromet is through the Course Evaluatio form. Each studet completes this form durig the teth week of each quarter. Each studet is requested to provide qualitative feedback to the istructor o the back of the form. Cosistet with Chicago Booth s log-stadig empirical traditios, a commitmet to cotiuous improvemet ecessarily requires the measuremet of the key elemets i the learig eviromet, the wide dissemiatio of the results throughout the istitutio, ad the trackig of progress through time. Excellece i a learig eviromet is attaiable oly if faculty ad studets adhere to the ideals listed above. What follows is a set of specific expectatios for both studets ad faculty that follow directly from those ideals. These mutual expectatios are either trivial or obvious. They are ot trivial because everyoe must cosistetly atted to details ad alig attitudes with behavior i order to achieve excellece i the learig eviromet. They are ot obvious because of the diversity of cultures ad prior experieces amog the faculty ad studets. Plagiarism Studets must ot represet aother s work as their ow. I the preparatio of all papers ad other writte work, studets should carefully distiguish betwee their ow ideas ad those that have bee derived from other sources. Iformatio ad opiios draw from whatever source are to be attributed specifically to their respective sources. Studets should lear the proper forms of citatio. Quotatios must be properly placed withi quotatio marks ad fully cited. I all cases where material or ideas preseted are derived from a studet s readig ad research, the source must be idicated. Studets who submit work either ot their ow or without clear attributio to origial sources will be subject to discipliary actio. Puishmet for plagiarism may iclude expulsio from the uiversity. Refer to the sectio coverig Academic Hoesty i Plagiarism i the uiversity s Studet Maual of Uiversity Policies ad Regulatios for more details. Group work must be clearly idicated as group work. Examiatios ad Other Graded Work Studets must ot represet aother s work as their ow. Commuicatio is ot permitted betwee studets durig a examiatio or o a assigmet. For examiatios, the use of otes ad books is ot permitted, except whe specifically permitted by the faculty member. Use of calculators ad other electroic equipmet i the classroom ad durig examiatios is etirely at the discretio of the faculty member. Studets should iquire specifically as to the appropriateess of a programmable calculator ad other electroic equipmet durig a exam. I the case of take-home examiatios ad all other graded work, uless otherwise stipulated by the istructor, studets may use ay writte, prited, or otherwise recorded material to fid the solutio. 6 Studet Hadbook 2013 14 Regulatios, Policies, ad Procedures

A paper may be submitted for oe course oly. Ay exceptio requires advace approval i writig from all professors cocered. The title page o a paper should idicate the course (or courses) for which it is submitted. Failure to follow these rules will result i discipliary actio. Examiatio Policies Chicago Booth has a log-stadig policy that fial exams are to be admiistered ad take durig predetermied fials periods. Studets are expected to be available to write examiatios durig scheduled exam periods ad should ot approach istructors with requests to reschedule exams or to make special accommodatios. Periodically studets face coflicts betwee scheduled exams ad work-related commitmets. For example, a uaticipated busiess trip or the start of a itership or ew job (obtaied after the date whe it cost less to drop a course) ca create a geuie coflict with pre-aouced exam periods. I the evet of a coflict, studets are directed to speak directly with their faculty regardig the coflict. The resolutio of this coflict rests solely with the faculty member. Studets with uavoidable circumstaces, such as illess, grave persoal difficulty, or a death i the family, should cotact the appropriate MBA program office which will work with the faculty i appropriate cases to fid a resolutio. The examiatio schedule for fial exams is olie at programs.chicagobooth.edu/curriculum. Studets should check the examiatio caledar carefully whe schedulig courses to avoid exam time coflicts or erollig i a schedule i which more tha two exams are scheduled o the same day. These policies exted to all graded work (midterms, take-home exams, group projects, cases, etc.) for which a deadlie is imposed by the istructor ad detailed i his/her course syllabus. Ulawful Harassmet The uiversity is committed to maitaiig a academic eviromet i which its members ca freely work together, both i ad out of the classroom, to further educatio ad research. The uiversity caot thrive uless each member is accepted as a autoomous idividual ad is treated civilly, without regard to his or her sex, or, for that matter, ay other factor irrelevat to participatio i the life of the uiversity. Members of the uiversity should uderstad that this stadard must shape our iteractios regardless of whether it is backed up by the threat of sactios. Certai types of behavior may be iappropriate eve though ot illegal ; speech ca be offesive, eve though allowed. Sexual harassmet icludig sexual assault by ay member of the uiversity commuity is prohibited. Without feelig costraied by specific defiitios, ay perso who believes that his or her educatioal or work experiece is compromised by sexual harassmet or sexual assault should feel free to cotact a advisor or director i his or her appropriate program office to discuss the situatio. A studet also may seek assistace from a sexual harassmet complait advisor. A curret list of advisors is available olie at ulawfulharassmet.uchicago.edu. The Full- Time MBA Program Academic Services iformal procedures, icludig advisig ad mediatio, do ot preempt formal chaels of complait available withi the uiversity. Mediatio will ot be used to resolve complaits of sexual assault. Formal complaits are hadled through the appropriate area s disciplie process. For the etire Policy o Ulawful Discrimiatio ad Harassmet, studets should refer to the uiversity s Studet Maual of Uiversity Policies ad Regulatios available olie at studetmaual.uchicago.edu. Studet Cosultig Projects Studet work performed for cosultig projects usig the Chicago Booth ame, trademarks, servicemarks, ad logos will be reviewed by the faculty uder the followig coditios: 1. All such projects must be reviewed, approved, ad sposored by a regularly appoited, full-time Chicago Booth faculty member (i.e., faculty with titles of professor, associate professor, assistat professor, or cliical faculty member) before the projects are udertake. Studet Hadbook 2013 14 Regulatios, Policies, ad Procedures 7

2. Proposals must be submitted to the appropriate program office at least six weeks i advace of the begiig of a project. 3. All such projects must iclude provisios for a ogoig update, review, ad approval process by the faculty sposor, i cojuctio with the appropriate program office. 4. Studets are expected to act respectfully ad with itegrity i all iteractios with cliets ad other outside cotacts o behalf of the Chicago Booth cosultig project. 5. Studets are expected to meet cliet commitmets i a thorough ad timely maer. 6. Studets are expected to hoestly represet themselves ad their purpose whe collectig sesitive data, particularly i competitor cotexts, o behalf of a cliet. Ay fee compesatio received for such projects should be paid directly to Chicago Booth, with the amout of fees depedet upo the chael. Studets are ot permitted to receive fee compesatio for such cosultig projects. However, they are permitted to receive reimbursemet from cliets for direct expeses icurred while completig a project. Studets coductig outside cosultig projects usig Chicago Booth ames, trademarks, servicemarks, ad logos are expected to behave i a professioal maer. Studets are ot permitted to coduct cosultig projects usig Chicago Booth ames, trademarks, servicemarks, ad logos outside of these chaels. Specific Stadards of Professioalism Alcohol All members of the uiversity commuity should be aware of the requiremets of Illiois law cocerig the cosumptio, possessio, ad sale of alcoholic beverages. The uiversity expects each member of the commuity to be resposible for his or her ow coduct ad for the cosequeces of that coduct. Ay violatio of the uiversity alcohol ad other drug policy by a studet will result i appropriate discipliary proceedigs, as well as possible legal oes. Illiois law prohibits the cosumptio ad possessio of alcohol by persos uder the age of 21 ad the supplyig of alcohol to ay perso uder the age of 21. Illiois law also prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages except by those licesed to sell such beverages. Idividuals plaig campus evets should cosult with the studet group advisors i Studet Programs ad Evets.
