How we support studets durig the placemet year Each studet is allocated a Visitig Tutor who is a member of the academic staff from the School of Sport, Exercise ad Health Scieces. The Visitig Tutor will visit the orgaisatio o at least oe occasio. Durig the visit the Tutor will typically talk separately with both the studet ad the Workplace Supervisor assiged by the employig orgaisatio. The purpose of these visits is to maitai cotact with all parties ad to satisfy the Tutor that the work beig udertake by the studet is appropriate ad that the studet is makig a effective cotributio to the orgaisatio. They are asked to assess the studet s progress a secod time just prior to completio of the placemet. The Health ad Safety Executive have recommeded that we ask employers formally for assuraces o health ad safety. As part of the approval process we are required to ask each employer to complete a Health ad Safety Checklist (cofirmig legal health ad safety requiremets are complied with), which must be retured to the Udergraduate Office prior to the studet beig allowed to start work. The Udergraduate Office i the School of Sport, Exercise ad Health Scieces should also be otified of ay sigificat chage of placemet locatio which may alter resposes give i the Placemet Health ad Safety Checklist. Studets o placemet are employees, ad as such are owed a duty of care. The provisio of relevat health ad safety iformatio ad adequate supervisio are particularly importat aspects, especially give that for may studets this will be their first real experiece of the workplace. Whilst employers have the primary duty to esure the health ad safety of placemet participats durig their placemet, we recogise the Uiversity also has a duty of care. Studets are briefed o health ad safety issues prior to the ed of their secod year at Uiversity, although this briefig is of a geeral ature ad does ot iclude ay specific iformatio eeded for ay particular job. What does it cost? Orgaisatios are ecouraged to offer a salary that will eable studets to meet reasoable expeses, however it is recogised that this is ot always possible.
