Installing the Pharos Client onto your Macintosh laptop Downloading Pharos for Macintosh computer To download the Pharos client, click on the link below. Download Pharos Software for Macintosh Installing the Pharos Client onto your laptop The following instructions will show users how to install the Pharos client. Requirements: Macintosh OSX 10.4 and up User must have access authorization to install the software (you will need to enter your computer user ID and password). User must connect to the SFSU campus Wi-Fi network (see instructions for connecting to the campus wireless network below). To connect to the campus wireless network, see: Requirements for Wireless Access 1. Download the installer 2. Double-click SFSU_Library_Printer.dmg 3. Double-click the file popup.pkg that appears on the desktop.
4. The installation process will begin. Click Continue. 5. The next screen has information about the installation process. Click Continue. 6. Select your main Mac drive as the destination for the application. Click Install.
7. Enter your laptop's username and password 8. When the process is finished, click Close. 9. You should see SFSU_Library_Printer in your Print & Scan window

Printing from your own computer with Pharos NOTE: Known issues - Pharos has difficulty printing PDF files. For the PDF file printing workaround, save the file and then reopen it in Adobe Reader. Once the Pharos Client is installed on your computer, you will see all available printers in your Printers and Faxes or Print & Scan window: 1. Select Print. 1. Select the correct printer 1. Windows Laptop: OneCard PostScript Library WiFi 2. Macintosh Laptop: SFSU_Library_Printer 2. Send your job to the printer 2. When a print job is submitted, the Pharos Print Job Details pop-up window will appear. 1. Enter a password twice for the print job. The password is to ensure that you are the only one who can release your job to print because your account will be charged accordingly. NOTE: If you forget your print job password, it is not recoverable. Note: It is recommended that you simple 3-4 digits numbers. 2. Click Print. Note: If you accidentally submitted/sent a print job that you don't wish to release, you can leave it in the print queue and it will automatically be deleted in 2 hours.
3. Retrieve your print job at the location it was submitted. Note: There will be a release station that will allow you to release your print job if money is available on your account to pay for it. Value can be added to your SF State ID (OneCard) or buy Guest Cards at VTS (Value Transfer Station).
Pharos Printing and Copying System FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) Your Account: Q. Do I need a valid SFSU account to install and print to SFSU Library Wi-Fi printers? A. Yes, you must be connected to the SFSU wireless network in order to print to any of the Pharos SFSU Wi-Fi printers in the labs. Q. How do I login to SFSU Wi-Fi? Only current students, staff and faculty can log in to the SF State wireless system. You will need your SF State ID number and password. 1. Connect your computer to the SFSU network using your computer's wireless manager. 2. Open a Web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari). 3. The browser will be automatically directed to the wireless login page. Enter yourid number and password in the required fields. 4. Click Log In. If popups are enabled for the SF State domain, you will see a new window with a logout link. SFSU Help Desk Q. What should I do if I am a visitor, friends of the library or SFSU alumni, and would like to print? A. Visitors, friends of the library or alumni who wish to print may add money to a Guest Cards. The Guest account allows use of select printers in the Research Commons in the library first floor. Payment: Q. How to add money to SF State ID or Guest Card. Can I pay for my print jobs with a debit or credit card? A. Q. It's the end of the school term, and I still have money left in my Pharos electronic account. Can I cash the account out? A. All sales are final. You will not receive a refund for any unused print credits regardless of class withdrawal, graduation, etc. Q. Do faculty and staff have to pay for this service? A. Anyone who uses Pharos printers, copy machines and/or plotters are expected to pay for his/her print-out. Printing: Q. What should I do if I'm trying to print a PDF file? A. Before printing, save the file and then reopen it in Adobe Reader. Q. Do I need to download the Pharos Printer software every time I print? A. You only need to download the Black-n-White or Color print software ONCE. Q. What versions of the operating system will this work on? A. The wireless printing package will work on Windows XP 32 and 64 bit, Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit, and Windows 7 32 and 64 bit. Macintosh OSX 10.4 and up. Q. Will I be charged anymore for printing from my personal laptop? A. The costs to print from your laptop are the same price as if you were printing in a computer lab. Q. Can I print from home? A. Unfortunately you cannot print from home. You must be connected to the SFSU wireless network in order to print to any of the Pharos SFSU Wi-Fi printers in the labs. Q. Can I print remotely? A. Yes, you can print from any machine (including your own laptop) by installing the Pharos remote printing application on your laptop or desktop machine. Pharos can be installed on either a PC or Macintosh computer. Q. If I print from my laptop, can I pick-up the print out in any of the Pharos SFSU Library Wi-Fi Printers? A. Yes, all the Pharos SFSU Wi-Fi printers are tied in together and you can pick-up your print outs from any of the SFSU Library Wi-Fi printers. Q. Can I print my documents in a duplex (double-sided) format? A. No - the current HP printers doesn t support duplex (double-sided) printing. Troubleshooting: Q. My firewall/security software appears to be blocking the Pharos software from connecting to the network. What do I need to do to fix this? A. The Pharos software needs to be able to open outgoing network connections on TCP ports 515 and 28203. Alternatively, you can choose to allow all connections from the program "<system drive>\program Files\Pharos\bin\popupcli.exe". Q. During the installation on a Windows machine, I was told that the printer driver was not digitally signed and/or had not passed Microsoft's compatibility tests. Do I need to worry about this? A. You do not need to worry about this. This should not occur on most systems, but could happen if the printer installation is attempting to make use of a file already present on your system. Use of the Pharos printers should not be affected. Q. What should I do if I accidentally submitted/sent an erroneous print job (e.g.: an assignment that has typos)? A. If you submitted/sent a print job but find errors in it before releasing the print job, do not release the job. The print job will time out and automatically be deleted in 2 hours. Q. What should I do if my print job/s was/were stolen or deleted? A. All users are responsible for picking up their print jobs once they are sent to the printer. J. Paul Leonard Library is not responsible for lost or stolen or deleted print jobs. Q. What kinds of printing issues qualify for a reprint? A. Reprint will only be issued for bad print jobs resulting from mechanical or equipment failure such as smeared toner, light print or partially-printed pages, or paper jams that cause damage to the page. For assistance with these issues, ask for the assistant at the Help Desk. Q. I've gone through all the questions, and didn't see anything about my problem now what? A. Please contact the helpdesk for further assistance. Q. Uninstalling the Pharos Software A. Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 Open the 'Add or Remove Programs' Control Panel in Windows 2000/XP or the 'Programs and Features' Control Panel in Windows Vista/7. Scroll down the list until you see an item named 'Pharos' and click on un-install it. Q. Troubleshooting SFSU Wi-Fi login A. If you are unable to log in to the SFSU wireless network, try the following: 1. Change your SF State password and try logging in again. 2. Check your SF State e-mail and verify that you have not received any notices that your wireless account has been locked for violations such as virus activity.
3. Submit a Help Desk service request. 4. Due to the wide variety of settings and configurations possible on personal laptops, we cannot guarantee that wireless printing will work on all laptops.
