Course Enrolment Guide Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Administration NSW, VIC, QLD 04 3. Program Information This course provides students with discipline-specific learning in the broader context of business studies through developing intellectual ability, an understanding of self and others and professional business skills. Students will gain specialist knowledge in at least one business discipline according to the Major(s) they choose (in the Commerce component of the dual degree), with opportunities available for wider study in businessrelated fields of study. In addition to an understanding of organisational behaviour and working within organisations, students will also gain an appreciation of the centrality of ethics and probity in commercial and interpersonal transactions. Accounting Accounting plays a vital role in the decision-making of all organisations. To become an effective, well educated accounting professional, graduates need to be fully equipped with technical competency, analytical, communication, and leadership skills, an understanding of business ethics, and an understanding of business organisations. The accounting program at ACU is fully accredited by the CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. As a graduate, you will be ready to begin a professional career in public, corporate, notfor-profit, or governmental accounting. With the technical and analytical skills you've acquired in the program, you can begin studying for the CPA or CA examinations, which are viewed by the business community as the basic indicator of professional competence. Accounting graduates are in high demand and have excellent prospects for career advancement. Commercial Law This major is to provide students with sufficient knowledge and understanding of a range of Commercial Law subjects so as to hold them in good stead in a variety of business careers, and to promote further study in related fields, including law. It is important to emphasise that this is a major with a legal focus in a commerce degree, and of itself does not constitute any form of legal qualification. As well as providing students with a sound grasp of the rule of law and regulation in business, the proposed major is intended to create an awareness of legal issues as they relate to commercial activities, and to sensitise graduates to the legal and ethical nuances and implications of business practices. Financial Services (Sydney only) Financial Services is one of the fastest growing disciplines in Australia. It is estimated that nearly seven million Australians receive some sort of financial advice. Financial services provides for an ethically based education that meets the challenges of providing financial advice in the twenty-first century. In this course you will learn about personal financial planning, Australia's capital markets, managing portfolios of investments, superannuation and retirement planning, as well as taxation, finance and general subjects. Human Resource An organisation s most valuable resource is its people. Human Resource focuses on the core discipline of leadership in encouraging people to achieve their best Information last updated on 3-Mar-4 Page 5

Course Enrolment Guide Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Administration NSW, VIC, QLD 04 levels of performance. It involves an understanding of human values-issues that are very much a part of the ACU ethos. Information Systems (Sydney only) The study of information systems goes beyond computer hardware and software. It involves understanding the decision-making structure within an organisation and building information systems to support the needs of decision makers. This can mean finding innovative ways to provide information and data from source to user, from market to analyst, and between dozens of locations abroad or at home. For graduates with this major, career opportunities are abundant. Although computer hardware and software companies receive most of the attention, the fact is that all public and private sector organisations are demanding more useful information and are looking for people who know how to develop and manage it. This major is accredited with the Australian Computer Society. International (Some units in this major maybe only available online) This major aims is to provide students with detailed knowledge and understanding of issues involved in conducting business in the international context. It emphasises key processes and systems that constitute the matrix of international commerce, and provides discipline-specific applications of these elements in practical settings. The major is designed to create an awareness of legal issues as they relate to commercial activities, and to sensitise graduates to the nuances of international business practice. (Some units in this major maybe only available online) This proposed major has been designed for students with strong orientation to management and leadership. The program is based on a well-rounded sequence of management units aimed at developing sound understanding of the principles of management in aspiring future business leaders. The units of the program provide learners with practical knowledge of all major management areas, such as accounting, marketing, human resource management, organisational behaviour, operations and information systems. When you mention marketing, most people think of consumer products. Actually, marketing is critical to any organisation because it is the art and science of defining opportunities and then convincing people to try whatever it is that an organisation chooses to offer: Vegemite, iron ore, insurance, legal services, education, charitable, not for profit, and environmental programs. As markets become more complex, volatile, and global, people who understand consumer decision-making and the management of marketing programs become essential to a successful organisation. If you choose as your major you will study various aspects such as market research and forecasting, advertising, retailing, buyer behaviour, and new product development. Career opportunities include sales, sales management, product and brand management, advertising, public relations and market research. Information last updated on 3-Mar-4 Page 6

Course Enrolment Guide Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Administration NSW, VIC, QLD 04 Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (OHSE) All units in this major are only offered online. The aim of the OHSE major is not to produce qualified OHSE practitioners, but to educate business managers in detail about OHSE, and to provide a solid foundation for students to go on to become OHSE practitioners and/or researchers should they choose to do so. The emphasis is on risk assessment and management. Supply Chain (SCMgmt) (Some units in this major may be only available online) SCMgmt, also known as Logistics, is the business planning framework for the management of material, service, information and capital flows. It includes the increasingly complex information, communication and control systems required in today's business environment. SCMgmt is critical to the success of any company which manufactures, transports, stores or handles goods. The primary aim of the major is not to produce logistics technicians, but supply chain managers - graduates capable of understanding organisational practices, governance, strategy and processes, and managing the supply chain as part of an overall business.
