3 Course Structure Bachelor of Psychological Science (Pass) (Any alterations to this information will be advised by the School) The Bachelor of Psychological Science includes an extended sequence in psychology and a minor in counselling to develop skills and knowledge for future professional practice. The course is recognised by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as an accredited threeyear undergraduate degree in psychology. Elective units Students will complete three elective units including at least one psychology elective and at least one general elective. The other elective may be either a psychology or general elective. Eight psychology elective units will offer students choice and a broader academic experience (i.e., Health Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Culture and Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Moral Psychology and Justice, Introduction to Neuropsychology, Small Group Processes, Organisational Psychology). 5 Core Curriculum The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University s identity and mission. The units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The Core is comprised of a total of five units: Two University Core units: All students in the Bachelor of Psychological Science program are required to complete the following University Core units as part of this program: UNCC100 Our World, Community and Vulnerability UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives a) UNCC units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate in Tutorial Direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for this course. b) Please consult with your Course Coordinator if any of the following applies to you: You need to repeat a UNCC unit due to a previous fail grade You are unable to complete a UNCC unit during the standard semester in which it is offered You plan to enrol in an advertised international option specific to the Core Two Core Curriculum Program units: These units build explicitly on the University Core units and all students in the Bachelor of Psychological Science program are required to complete at least two Program Core units. The list below contains those units being offered in 2014: COUN Ethical and Professional Issues in Counselling PSYC Social Psychology (Pre: PSYC200 Lifespan Development) One Community Engagement unit: This unit serves to integrate theory with practice. All students in the Bachelor of Psychological Science program are required to complete the following Community Engagement : HUMA247 Learning in the Community The Learning in the Community unit supports the development of student awareness of social responsibility to the wider community. Graduates should be persons whose moral development is mature and who are professionally competent, and able to make significant contributions to the profession and the wider community. This unit enables students to contribute to community service in tangible ways that support ethical, spiritual and personal development. More information on the Core Curriculum please refer to
6 Additional requirements Police Check and Working with Children Check If you wish to undertake a placement with a community organisation where you will be working directly with young or vulnerable people, you will need to obtain a Police Check and/or Working with Children Check. As the checks can take some time to arrange it is suggested that you submit your application at least six months before commencement of your placement.
