Cmpsitin f cursewrk ptin The cursewrk ptin r directed degree cnsists f tw parts. The first part (M1) cnsists f cursewrk, including the Research Prpsal mdule. The secnd part (M2) cmprises a dissertatin f limited scpe. In the secnd year, after cmpletin f the cursewrk and Research Prpsal mdule, students can start with an internship and finally write the bard examinatin which will allw them t register with the HPCSA as accredited industrial psychlgists. The master s prgramme cvers the fields f rganisatinal, persnnel and career psychlgy as well as psychmetrics and research. Tuitin in the M1 year is presented in a mixed mde delivery. The majrity f the wrk entails nline activities and invlvement, such as submitting assignments, grup assignments and nline prtflis, as well as engaging in a variety f nline activities such as blgs, wikis and frums. Prspective students therefre need t have daily and unlimited access t the internet. Attendance f practical classes is als cmpulsry, as students need t attend wrkshps which have been gruped int fur blck week sessins f ne week each (20 days in ttal) in Pretria. Assessment takes place during the year and students have t btain a pass mark fr each mdule separately. A dissertatin f limited scpe n an apprved theme within industrial and rganisatinal psychlgy is planned by the candidate during the M1 year as part f the Research Prpsal mdule. SECOND YEAR M2 year: Dissertatin f limited scpe (60 credits) Students must have passed all the mdules that frm part f the M1 year befre they may register fr the M2 year. During the M2 year the research prject, based n the apprved research prpsal, is carried ut by the candidate, dcumented under the supervisin f a designated supervisr frm the Department f Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy and handed in fr internal and external examinatin upn cmpletin. If cmpletin f the dissertatin takes lnger than ne year, students may reregister, prvided that there is enugh and satisfactry evidence f prgressin. Selectin prcess As the Department f Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy can nly accmmdate a maximum f 25 students annually fr this prestigius prgramme, a thrugh selectin prcess in the frm f a scientific selectin battery is emplyed, based n best practice internatinally. In Suth Africa, the Emplyment Equity Act 55 f 1998 allws fr fair discriminatin based n, amng ther things, the inherent requirements f the jb, and therefre subscribes twards a mre utputbased apprach during selectin. The aim f the utput-based apprach is therefre t determine whether a candidate has the necessary cmpetencies that are inherently required t perfrm the rle successfully. The cmpetency-based assessment technique fllwed during the selectin f master's students therefre assesses the behaviur linked t the rle f an industrial and rganisatinal psychlgist. This selectin prcess entails eliminatin runds which lead t the selectin f the final tp 25 students, taking int cnsideratin the emplyment equity expectatins f the university and the prfessin. Students will be infrmed after each rund whether they have been successful r nt. In the pre-selectin stage the fllwing criteria will be applied: Applicants applying fr the master s prgramme need t be in pssessin f a cmpleted hnurs degree in Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy with a minimum average f 60% fr the degree with the main subjects cvered as specified by the HPCSA. Alternatively they shuld be in pssessin f an apprpriate pstgraduate diplma with a minimum average f 60%; r a 480 credit bachelr's degree with a minimum f 96 credits at NQF level 8 in the field f industrial and rganisatinal psychlgy (IOP) with an average f 60%. Applicants with an apprpriate pstgraduate diplma r a 480 credit bachelr s degree, wh have nt cmpleted a mdule in research methdlgy, may be required t cmplete such a mdule befre they will be allwed t register. Applicants applying fr this ptin f the master s prgramme in industrial and rganisatinal psychlgy at Unisa shuld ensure that they will be able t attend the cmpulsry 20 days f practical wrk at Unisa s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretria, scheduled ver fur ne-week perids. Stage 2 Online assessment All applicants successful in the pre-selectin phase will be infrmed via e-mail f the utcme. Successful applicants will be invited t d nline psychmetric assessments and will be cntacted by a test distributr r an rganisatin ding the nline-testing fr us, with instructins explaining the frthcming prcess. Applicants will have a specified time perid within which t cmplete the nline assessments. Thse wh d nt cmplete these during the specified perid will be eliminated frm further selectin runds. Applicants wh are nt able t meet the cut-ff nrm will be infrmed and eliminated frm the final selectin rund. Generic feedback will be included in the unsuccessful email ntificatin. If an applicant wants detailed feedback n the specific psychlgical tests, it can be btained frm the testing cmpany directly. Prfessinal feedback rates will be charged by the cmpany and this is payable by the applicant. The department will nt prvide any such feedback. Stage 3 Final selectin The successful applicants frm stage 2 will be invited t the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus in Pretria fr the final selectin prcess. This prcess will entail a full day assessment phase cnsisting f the fllwing: applicants attending a frmal panel interview applicants evaluating and integrating scientific articles accrding t certain guidelines prvided t them n the day Applicants wh, fr whatever reasns, are nt able t attend this full day f the final selectin stage will unfrtunately nt be accmmdated n alternative dates. Apart frm academic perfrmance and availability t attend the cmpulsry practical wrk, persnal attributes and the applicant s practical wrk envirnment are used as criteria during the final selectin prcess. This mentined criterin refers t fulltime emplyment in an IOP envirnment, r being able t make alternative arrangements t wrk in such an envirnment. This is essential as the majrity f assignments are based n students accessing and analysing their rganisatins in rder t engage in practical case studies, tasks and assignments.
Based n the requirements t register as an industrial and rganisatinal psychlgist, cnsideratin will be given t applicants wh can gain access t a related rganisatin and supervising psychlgist that will enable them t cmplete the required internship. This ptin t btain a Master s degree in Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy is primarily researched-based. It cnsists f a full dissertatin nly and des nt lead t prfessinal HPCSA registratin as an industrial psychlgist. A research master s degree in Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy (IOP) will enable a student t critically identify and generate effective, scientifically-based slutins t behaviural prblems in the wrkplace, cntributing t enhancing talent management practices in a wrk cntext. Cmpsitin f MCOM IOP Optin 2 A research prject is carried ut under the supervisin f a supervisr frm the Department f Industrial and Organisatinal Psychlgy and the dissertatin is submitted and handed in upn cmpletin fr internal and external examinatin. Students are als required t submit a publishable article, based n the dissertatin, tgether with the dissertatin. Students need t get a pass mark f 50% fr the dissertatin in rder t btain this degree. Passing the prerequisite research prpsal mdule. Prspective students need t enrl and pass a research prpsal mdule (MPEMS91). The utcme f this mdule is an acceptable research prpsal n an apprved theme within the industrial and rganisatinal psychlgy. Once students are registered fr the mdule, requirements and guidelines fr the research prpsal as well as ther additinal resurces that wuld aid them with the writing f the prpsal are available nline n a mdule site. Students will be allcated a supervisr t help them with the frmulatin f an acceptable prpsal. Students will have the pprtunity t submit their prpsals three times during the curse f the mdule t the department. If the submitted research prpsal is still nt acceptable upn the third submissin, students will nt be allwed t register fr the dissertatin.
