P HRMA THE PORTLAND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION since 1947... the voice of human resources for the Portland, Oregon, business community for over 60 years providing professional development, building relationships, stimulating career growth, enhancing workplace contributions, collaborating with charitable organizations.

PHRMA is one of the best opportunities anywhere for developing talent as a human resource leader. Whether networking within the chapter, increasing skills through education, or using the vast SHRM network of resources, membership in PHRMA has helped me and my Portland State students attain professional excellence. This translates to professional growth and success on the job, culminating in bottom-line results for employers. Alan Cabelly PHRMA Member since 1995

PORTLAND S VOICE FOR HUMAN RESOURCES The Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA) is a dynamic organization that has served as the voice of human resources for the Portland business community for over 60 years and currently has over 1,000 members. PHRMA focuses on three key areas: To serve the HR professional by providing members with unique benefits that will contribute to their personal professional development and provide value-added resources for their businesses, To look proactively for ways to broadcast the message of HR and to respond to professional agendas from an HR perspective, and PHRMA S MISSION to engage the human resource community by providing professional development, relationship-building opportunities, and other resources in order to stimulate professional growth and enhance workplace contributions in the greater Portland area. To engage the Portland community with collaborative outreach efforts. PHRMA offers opportunities for HR professionals to build critical relationships with peers, colleagues, and mentors in the greater Portland area through active networking avenues.

INTRODUCTION As part of its mission to reach out to the business community, PHRMA has a commitment to advance the HR profession by building relationships with members of the media. PHRMA as an association, and its members as individual representatives of the profession, can provide valuable information and education to the community at large through the media. In recent years, issues such as ethics, privacy, health care, labor shortages, layoffs, and economic recovery have been at the forefront of the news. All of these issues, and many others, provide an important opportunity to reinforce the role that smart people management plays in effective business strategy; PHRMA strives to lead this charge and provide the necessary human resources focus for these issues. The sitting PHRMA president welcomes inquiries about HR-related topics and events; appropriate guidance and resources will be provided. AFFILIATIONS PHRMA is a 100% Chapter in that membership in the national Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) is required. Membership in SHRM provides HR professionals with additional benefits and offerings that complement local PHRMA benefits. PHRMA is also a member of the Northwest Human Resources Management Association (NHRMA), which comprises chapters from Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The sitting PHRMA President is also a member of the Oregon State Council. Being a part of the PHRMA community has allowed me access to professional networks as well as cultivating some long-lasting friendships that were started because of a mutual passion for human resources. Anne Mersereau PHRMA Member since 2000

AWARDS PHRMA has received numerous professional awards during its 60-plus years. This recognition speaks to the Chapter s consistently superior service and dedication to the HR field. Pinnacle Award: The Pinnacle Award is the most prestigious chapter and state council award offered by SHRM, which represents more than 200,000 human resource professionals around the world and over 500 local chapters. The Pinnacle Award was established in 1991 to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the advancement of effective human resource management. PHRMA has received Pinnacle Awards in 1991, 2000, 2004, and 2006. Superior Merit: This award recognizes professional chapters of SHRM for their exceptional ability in operations, the professional development of chapter members, promotion of the profession, and support of SHRM in partnership. PHRMA has received a Superior Merit Award each year since the award s inception in 1976. Randy Lundberg Award: PHRMA was the recipient of the 1997 Randy Lundberg Award, presented by NHRMA; this award recognizes achievement and excellence in overall chapter programming and operations. PHRMA has helped me grow personally and professionally. Greg Bell PHRMA Member since 2004

MEMBER BENEFITS ROBUST WEBSITE Our website features a wealth of information, ranging from a complete member directory, monthly newsletter, informative and topical articles, and job bank to a schedule of events, volunteer opportunities and other resources. www.pdxhr.org In addition, weekly email updates are forwarded to members to alert them to upcoming Chapter events and offer timely legal- and HR-themed articles. NETWORKING Throughout the year, PHRMA sponsors a myriad of occasions to network with your HR colleagues. PHRMA s website features a calendar of events that announces upcoming networking opportunities. SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS Depending on urgency and available resources, smaller special interest groups (SIGs) meet quasi-regularly to discuss a focused, specific topic of human resources. These targeted meetings include multiple areas of HR specialization, although new SIGs are continually considered: Recruiting, Selection, and Retention Compensation and Benefits Employee Relations Training and Development Active Job Search Diversity HR Technologies Strategic Human Resources Management Workforce Readiness

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Our Chapter supports professional development by offering study groups and testing help for those who seek HR certification a demonstration of mastery of the profession: Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) The certification study groups feature experienced subject-matter experts and allow for an interactive learning environment with one s HR peers. These programs are facilitated in accordance to the guidelines of the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI). Historically, our Chapter s pass rates for the PHR, SPHR, and GPHR examinations are consistently above the national average. The Chapter also has numerous opportunities for those with certification to receive recertification credits for example, the monthly luncheon programs, professional seminars, and other offerings. HRCI credit opportunities are announced throughout the year. I became a member of PHRMA in 1978. Over the years I became deeply involved in an HR association geared to professionals who work in higher education, as I do. However, I always maintained my membership in PHRMA to ensure I stayed connected with the broader HR community, a decision that has served me very well. Mary Ann Wersch PHRMA Member since 1978

MEMBER BENEFITS MONTHLY LUNCHEON PROGRAMS Meeting the third Wednesday of each month, PHRMA comes together for luncheons that feature timely HR topics presented by dynamic, thought-provoking, and often nationallevel speakers. The luncheons also allow for Chapter announcements, individual recognition, and a forum for invaluable networking. John Deller PHRMA member since 1997 Please consult with the PHRMA website for a description of each month s topic and speaker, as well as how to register. MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Imbedded in the Chapter s website, News & Views is PHRMA s monthly newsletter. Each edition includes the President s welcome message, information regarding the current month s luncheon program, a member spotlight, HR articles, advertising opportunities, plus much, much more. News & Views is a great way to stay on top of the latest PHRMA events, plus remain in tune with the HR issues that impact us all.

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM Three times per year, PHRMA sponsors a free-of-charge breakfast program for all new Chapter members. This program presents a summary of the membership benefits, history, and affiliations of the Chapter and introduces new members to the Chapter s Board of Directors. These meetings are a great way to get to know what PHRMA is all about. JOB BANK Organizations may post their position openings on our website, which will be viewed by hundreds of local HR practitioners. In turn, those seeking a new HR opportunity may access the site s current list of openings. The site also includes application instructions. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Become active in PHRMA! The Chapter offers a number of volunteer opportunities: Assist the Chapter s directors with their specific Committees (e.g., Membership, Monthly Programs, Annual Auction, Special Interest Groups). Submit articles for the monthly News & Views newsletter. Consider becoming a member of the Board of Directors. Participate in planning conferences and other PHRMA-sponsored events. In addition to helping the Chapter, volunteering also allows for personal development and further networking. Every HR position I ve held and any professional support I ve received, the origins can all be traced back to this organization. Alan Huston PHRMA Member since 2001

ORGANIZATION and MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION PHRMA s Board of Directors strives to maintain the integrity of the Chapter, while ensuring the most professional support services to all PHRMA members. The leadership of the board is consistent with state, regional, SHRM, and Chapter bylaws, policies, strategies, and objectives. All financial activities are conducted in a responsible manner, as the future health of the organization is ensured by investing back into PHRMA. The current PHRMA president is charged with the Chapter s leadership, while ensuring all board positions remain aligned with the PHRMA mission statement. Human resources remains an ever-changing, no-two-days-alike profession. Offering unique benefits, ongoing networking opportunities, and professional resources support (focusing on specific issues relevant to the greater Portland area), PHRMA membership will help guide you through your HR journey... you are not alone! Please visit our website, www.pdxhr.org, or contact the PHRMA Office, 503-655-6474, for information on becoming a member. Engaging the business community, reaching out to enhance professional relationships, and partnering with the community, PHRMA membership offers the vehicle with which to achieve HR excellence. We look forward to your becoming part of our network and to sharing the journey!

Getting involved with PHRMA at the student level within PSU five years ago has opened many doors for me in terms of professional development, coaching, mentoring and growing within this field. Not to mention the friends that I have made along the way. PHRMA truly is a rich resource that has rewarded me personally and professionally. Michael A.
