Dear West University Elementary School Supporter, WUES PTO is very excited to be preparing for the 2015-2016 year at West University Elementary School (WUES) 2015 marks a significant milestone as it is our 90 th birthday. When the school first opened its doors, it offered both elementary and middle school educations. In 1948, Pershing Middle School obtained its own campus, and the West U school became focused on providing an education to its elementary aged neighbors. In the 1970s and 1980s WUES was transformed from a school which Tim Fleck of the Houston Press described as "deteriorating" into "a community focal point that kept many West U children in public school through the fifth grade." Our faculty, administration, students and families have all played a part in shaping WUES. In our 90 th year, we are proud to be called an HISD Exemplary School, a Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll School, a Texas Monthly Magazine s "Top Rated School", and the #1 non-magnet Elementary School in the Greater Houston Area by Children at Risk 2015. The PTO s primary mission is to promote an environment where teachers and administrators can do their best work, and our students can do their best learning. Through the dedication and generosity of our corporate sponsors, WUES PTO is able to raise funds that directly support and enrich our students. With continued cuts in funding, our school needs this support to maintain the level of academic excellence that we enjoy and expect. WUES PTO uses your generous donations to support the education of our students through instructional materials, technology upgrades, child advocacy, service projects, teacher professional development, an in-classroom art program, playground upgrades and library renovations and books. Additionally, we host curriculum enrichment nights that encourage community involvement and deepen our students knowledge of art, math, science and global citizenship. We ask for your support to assist us in the continued success of WUES by making a tax-deductible donation to WUES PTO.
