Introduction NESCol WiFi is widely available throughout Aberdeen City, Altens, Fraserburgh, Clinterty and Ellon Campuses. In order to connect to and use the WiFi system, it is important to understand that a successful connection is a two part process. This document covers the first part of the procedure which establishes a connection. Once this step has been completed you must then download and install a Bloxx Security Certificate. Windows 7, 8 and 10 Connection Procedures Right click on the network connection icon at the bottom right hand corner of the display screen. Click on Open Network and Sharing Centre. You can also access this via Control Panel. In the displayed window click on Set up a new connection or network In the window click on Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next In the window in the Network name field type in NESCol PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS CASE SENSITIVE In the Security type field select WPA2 Enterprise. Ensure that Start this connection automatically is ticked and select Next. In the displayed window click on Change connection settings In the displayed window ensure that Connect automatically when this network is in range is ticked. Then click the Security tab at the top of the window. Version 1 (August 2016) 3
Click Settings In the displayed window untick Validate server certificate or Verify the server s identity by validating the certificate depending on your version of Windows. Click Configure Windows 7 Windows 8 and Windows 10 After you click Configure this new window will display. Ensure that Automatically use my Windows log on name and password (and domain if any). is unticked. Click OK. Then click OK again to close the window (Protected EAP Properties). In the window click the Advanced settings button In Advanced Settings ensure that Specify authentication mode: is ticked and select User authentication from the drop down list. Click Save credentials. You username is entered in the form nescol\username (your username is your 8 digit student number e.g. 12345678 or F1234567 and if connecting to the network for the first time your password will be your default one). Your username & password should NOT be entered if the device will be shared by other users. If you change your password later then you may need to update this information in the future. Click OK or Close until all windows have been closed. To connect click on the network icon at the bottom right hand corner of the Desktop taskbar and select the NESCol connection in the list of displayed networks. Leave Connect automatically ticked, enter your username & password in the form of nescol\username and password and click Connect. Windows 8 and 10 users may be prompted to accept the certificate by clicking Connect. Click Connect. Windows 7 users will be connected to the network directly. Connecting an Android 5 device to the NESCol WiFi Network From the Wi Fi screen in the settings menu select the NESCol network. Select the NESCol network and you will be prompted for your login details. Enter your username in the Identity and Anonymous Identity fields and your password in the password field. The device will then connect to the NESCol network if the correct username and password details have been entered. Your device is now correctly connected to the NESCol WiFi system. To Connect using Windows Phone 8.1 From the Start screen swipe right to get the list of apps, scroll down and tap on the Settings icon. Tap on WiFi to open WiFi Settings Version 1 (August 2016) 8
Tap on the NESCol network. Enter your username and password. Prefix your username with NESCol\ e.g. NESCol\12345678 Version 1 (August 2016) 9
Tap Accept on the prompt to Accept certificate and connect You will then return to the WiFi settings screen Your device is now correctly connected to the NESCol WiFi system. Connecting an IOS device to the NESCol WiFi Network (ipad and iphone) From the Wi Fi connections screen in the settings menu select the NESCol network. Then enter your username and password into the boxes. There will then be a Certificate message displayed. select the option to trust this certificate, this will have to be done to successfully connect to the network. Your device should now be connected. The tick will show next to the network name when you have successfully connected. Your device is now correctly connected to the NESCol WiFi system. Connecting an ios device to the NESCol WiFi Network (MacBook) Click on the Wireless Status icon in the Menu bar. The available networks will be listed. Select NESCol from the list. Enter your username and password and click Remember this network. Click Join. A dialog box will appear requesting you verify the certificate. Click Continue to accept the certificate. Enter the user name and password for your Mac to allow changes to the Certificate Trust Settings. Click Update Settings. Your device is now correctly connected to the NESCol WiFi system.
