Situation Midelney Place is situated on the outskirts of the thriving village of Curry Rivel amongst gently undulating countryside which remains some of the most unspoilt in the county. The village has a church, primary school and pub amongst other amenities. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away and offers a general range of day-to-day shops whilst Taunton, the county town, is easily reached for a greater variety as well as a theatre and the county cricket ground. There are several golf courses in the vicinity where you can also find the usual countryside pursuits. Midelney Place is ideally located for access to numerous independent preparatory and senior schools including Millfield, Sherborne, King s College and Taunton Schools as well as Hazlegrove and Perrott Hill. Curry Rivel affords easy access to the M5 and the A303 and there is a regular service into London Paddington from Taunton station.
The House Midelney Place is a Grade II listed Victorian country mansion which was constructed in a style typical of its era having dressed white lias stone elevations enhanced by mullioned windows and entranceways, all under tiled roofs. It is believed to have been completed in 1868 for the Trevilian family following design by James Piers St Aubyn and has been occupied by only a few families since as well as having had a brief period as a school. Internally the rooms are well proportioned and display the very best of Victorian architecture with high ceilings and many original or restored features. Throughout the property the use of fine timber is evident particularly to doorways, the main staircase and panelling in several rooms. There are far reaching views from many of the windows and the downstairs rooms overlook the balustraded terrace and lawns beyond. The house is well presented throughout and the current owners have improved it with thoughtful attention to detail. This is a graceful house of its period in a most attractive position. Gardens and Grounds The parkland setting is an important feature of the property affording great privacy and seclusion. The house is approached over a long drive to a formal gravelled and walled carriage turning area from which a doorway in the wall gives access to the wonderful gardens which comprise an excellent combination of formal garden and woodland. The formal parts lie principally to the south east and south west of the house and are mainly lawned with gracious stone stairways leading between the different levels. The eyes are drawn to the magnificent parkland beyond and finally to the fine distant views. An arboretum of superb mature specimen trees flanks the formal lawns which lead to a water garden. The main gardens are interspersed with various wide gravelled pathways which wind between the lawns, rose gardens and parterre. The paddocks lie beyond the main gardens. To the side of the house and away from the main entrance is a further cobbled courtyard and garage area. The large barn lies beyond here.
Stable Cottage The stable cottage was originally the stable block for the main house. It forms one side of a cobbled courtyard and is approached independently off the drive to the main house. Services Mains water, private drainage, oil fired heating. Local Authority South Somerset District Council
