The Flower Journey of a Lifetime: From the Growing Fields to Dutch Master Florists April 23 rd April 30 th, 2017 Sunday, April 23 th Arrive in Amsterdam Upon arrival in Amsterdam, students will check into the luxurious College Hotel or, if staying elsewhere, meet the group at the hotel for a welcome reception hosted by FlowerSchool NY. This is a great opportunity to become acquainted with the rest of the group and staff will be available to answer all questions about the tour. The College Hotel is one of Amsterdam s most prestigious hotels located in the heart of the De Pijp neighborhood, the center of the city s fashion and museum district. What was once a former secondary school, The College Hotel has continued this tradition by operating as a teaching hotel since 2005. In line with our own mission as floral students we will reside at this intimate & warm boutique hotel during our stay in Amsterdam. 1
Monday, April 24 th Aalsmeer Tour 6:00am On our first full day in Amsterdam, we will travel to the neighboring town of Aalsmeer. Here, we will have a tour of the famed Aalsmeer Flower Auction where over 20 million stems are sold daily on the auction clock. This will be an exclusive; behind-the- scenes look at this integral aspect of the floral industry. Lunch at Restaurant De Kas Following our morning at the flower auction, we will enjoy lunch at the prestigious restaurant, Restaurant De Kas. Led by Michelin rated chef, Gert Jan Hageman, De Kas grows their own produce and herbs in the restaurant's greenhouses and garden. Flower Farm Visit After lunch we will next explore several of the many flower farms local to the area. At these farms the growers coax flowers into perfect blooms using a variety of traditional methods and innovative technologies. We will visit a few different farms growing various products from the famous Dutch hydrangea to roses and lilac. This will be a unique look inside the floral growing process and starting point of the flower business. Everyone will be free for dinner and students will be provided a list of vetted restaurants to visit. Tuesday, April 25 th Dutch Florist Rutger Mulder Workshop at the Historical Garden Aalsmeer Rutger Mulder is a Dutch designer who has mastered the design style of his homeland while also working on some of the most exciting and monumental events throughout the US and Europe. Based on Rutger s work and style, we will begin the workshop with a discussion and demonstration of Dutch design. Later, Rutger will demonstrate how he joins European and American design traditions and aesthetics to achieve a fantastic result. Lunch / Historical Garden Aalsmeer Tour After the morning session lunch will be served in the garden followed by a private tour of the beautiful Historical Garden Aalsmeer. The Historical Aalsmeer continues to grow ancient rose and lilac varieties using ancient methods and techniques developed by the first Dutch growers. Upon our return to the College Hotel students will be free for the evening to enjoy dinner. Wednesday, April 26 th Private Tour of the Rijks Museum 10:00am After a busy day of gathering products, students will have the opportunity to go on a private tour of the newly renovated Rijks Museum to inspire for the following day s workshop with Remco Van Vliet. The Rijks is home to many of the world s most beloved masters including Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer and van Gogh. After the museum tour students will have the remaining afternoon and evening to explore the city and will meet up in the canal district for a canal cruise. 2
Cocktail & Hors D'oeuvres Cruise 5:00pm Later that evening, to celebrate our first night in Amsterdam, we will welcome you to Amsterdam with a traditional cocktail cruise aboard a renovated 19th century wooden salon boat. You haven t seen Amsterdam until you have floated through the canals sipping champagne and had a taste of the local cuisine on one of these beautiful antique boats. After being dropped of, students will be free for dinner. Thursday, April 27 th The entire city will be closed in observance of King s Day (formally Queen s Day). Students should be ready to spend the day wondering around the enjoying the flea markets, festivities and local flavor! Friday, April 28 th Remco Van Vliet of Van Vliet & Trap - Workshop & Demonstration Under the tutelage of Remco Van Vliet, students will create a Dutch party inspired designs drawing upon the inspiration and influence of the Dutch landscapes, museums and cultural events of the week. Using the best flowers available in Holland, Remco will lead the workshop creating his special Dutch vision and Style used for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After Decorating the room, and other parts of the hotel, students will be free for the afternoon and will host the FlowerSchool event. Saturday, April 29 th Keukenhof Garden and tulip field tour The final day will consist of a trip to the Keukenhoff growing fields and park. Keukenhof has a rich history. For centuries, the area was part of the estate of Teylingen Castle. During the 15th century, game was hunted and food collected in the region's untamed woods and dunes, for the kitchens of the castle of Jacoba van Beieren. This is where Keukenhof gets its name, which means kitchen courtyard in Dutch Students can either stay for a final, informal, dinner or depart on their next adventure.
