1 Course Description RUSSIA: OLYMPIC SOCHI AND MOSCOW July 6-August 1, 2011 Russian 203: INTERMEDIATE RUSSIAN I 3 hr.; 3 cr. M, T, W, Th, F, 3:30-6:00 Summer Session 2L. Registration code 2208 Dr. Svetlana Cheloukhina svetlana.cheloukhina@qc.cuny.edu During this course in Sochi, we will engage in the immersion-type study of the Russian language, culture and society. Sochi is the southernmost city of Russia, the future capital of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the host of the Formula-1 Grand Prix in It is the place to be and a perfect spot to learn the language and culture of the contemporary Russia. Often referred to as a jewel of the Black Sea coast, this place of natural contrasts is, both, a fashionable subtropical sea and a mountain ski resort, an area of ancient culture and history, and a vibrant metropolis with a developed infrastructure and rich cultural life. Covered with palm trees and lashing evergreen vegetation, the Greater Sochi stretches for 150 kilometers along the coastal line. On the opposite side, it is crowned by the snowy peaks of the North-Western Caucasus, guarding the city from the cold winds with their rugged beauty. From our boutique hotel located five minutes from the beach and closely to the sea cluster of the Olympic venues, we will take tours of Sochi and its attractions. We will be able to witness the preparations to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games firsthand, with the unprecedented construction of the Olympic objects, roadways and mountain tunnels going on full speed. We will visit Sochi State University for Tourism and Recreation to meet with students and faculty, and Sochi Olympic Committee to find out how to become volunteers for the Olympics. We will also stay in Krasnaia Poliana, the Olympic village in the mountain cluster, and take the tours of the Olympic objects and hiking trips up to the mountains. Our course will end with an overnight stay in Moscow. We will take the famous Moscow subway with its palace-like stations to reach the historic center of the city. Our walking tour will include the Red Square, the Mausoleum, the Alexandrovsky Garden, the Bolshoi Theatre, and the museums of Kremlin. Russian 203, Intermediate Russian Language I, is an immersion-type course in language and culture, and a continuation of Russian 112. It represents a second stage of language learning and includes an intensive practice in conversation, reading, and writing, and a more advanced, in-depth study of the Russian grammar. This course is a part of a prerequisite for the College language requirement and for the major in Russian. Course materials will include the course textbook and additional texts and materials provided by the instructor. Pre-requisite: RUSS 112 or a permission of the department. Please consult the faculty program coordinator for placement.
