Foreword For the first time in the Universiade history the games are officially divided between two countries, as the 27th Winter Universiade is hosted by Slovakia and Spain. The Finnish team which consists of 31 student athletes and 19 officials participates in all four sports organized in Slovakia and also four sports in Spain. Based on the mutual agreement, the Finnish Olympic Committee has recently taken charge of the Finnish Universiade teams from Finnish Student Sports Federation, the member of International University Sport Federation (FISU). Finland has participated in all Winter Universiades since 1962 except the 1975 games. Many internationally well-known and successful athletes, such as biathlete Kaisa Mäkäräinen and figure skater Kiira Korpi in 2000 s, have represented Finland at the Universiades. The latest games in Trentino, Italy in December 2013, were a great success for team Finland, as our athletes won eight medals altogether from four different sports. Three of those medals were golden, giving the members of Finnish team many reasons to cheer and celebrate at the award ceremonies (see front cover). Finnish athletes and officials are looking forward to tough but fair competitions, new experiences and a joyful atmosphere in the beautiful scenery of both Slovakian High Tatras as well as Granada and Sierra Nevada in Spain. Jukka Tirri Head of Mission Team Finland 4

Greetings from the High Performance Unit of Finnish Olympic Committee The Finnish Olympic Committee proudly presents the Finnish Team of 31 top athletes participating at the 27th Winter Universiade in Štrbské Pleso & Osrblie, Slovakia and in Granada, Spain. From 2015 onwards, the student elite sports in Finland is coordinated through the High Performance Unit (HPU) of Finnish Olympic Committee. Developing elite student sport and sending teams to Universiades is now one of the elementary functions of the HPU. In the work of HPU, the athlete and the athlete s path have been put at the centre of the arena. The athlete at the centre is a mindset which challenges all operators on the athlete s path to examine daily how their own activities influence the everyday lives of athletes and coaches. HPU wants to live along the athletes, teams and coaches, increase exchange of ideas between different sports, provide world-class support and services, and develop better training conditions for all the elite athletes and teams in Finland. In student elite sports we put strong emphasis on developing nationwide Sports Academies and creating opportunities for successful dual careers. The Universiades are a multi-sport event arranged, much like the Olympic Games. The Universiades and the World University Championships offer a great opportunity to gain experience of a big international event and a chance to compete on a high level. For many athletes, this an important step between national and world class level. I wish good luck, sparkling joy, and unforgettable memories for all the participants in Štrbské Pleso & Osrblie and in Granada. Be enthused over the spirit of sports! Leena Paavolainen Deputy director of the High Performance Unit and Director, Games Operations Finnish Olympic Committee 5
