On the operations side, our team of experienced, service-minded and highly-skilled staff and competent volunteers is growing everyday to ensure that each and every one of your needs and requirements is listened to and tackled in the most efficient way. This year we have already had the pleasure of hosting the NOCs of Sweden, USA and Estonia for a visit as well as meeting many of you at the EOC Seminar in Malta in May. We would like to thank the many NOC colleagues around the world who give so much valued advice; we will continue to listen and react to your input. We are currently contacting all the NOCs to collect your primary contact information details. We kindly ask you to return your information to us at your earliest convenience. 4 4 Latest News Vancouver Games expertise accumulated in Sochi Betweеn June 3rd and 11th, 2010 Sochi hosted the official debriefing of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Official representatives of the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, International Federations, members of the LOCOG, Sochi 2014, Rio 2016 teams and three applicant cities for the Games in 2018 gathered together in order to gain best experience and practice from VANOC and outline areas for future improvements. A combination of sessions and functional area workshops allowed all the participants to discuss and understand the needs of the different Games stakeholders. Sochi 2014 President and CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko said that the event had been incredibly useful for the team: Sochi 2014 will deliver creative and innovative Games with a unique Russian flavor, while being firmly grounded in Olympic Movement's best practice. Working with VANOC has allowed us to enhance our plans to ensure Russia s first Winter Games are a success. Sochi 2014 team members assisted National Olympic Committees in Singapore An enthusiastic group of the Sochi 2014 volunteers chosen by the organizer was involved in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Our staff assisted National Olympic Committees and their athletes at the Olympic village, venues and ceremonies. We believe that their integration and day-to-day work with the NOCs will help us to deliver a higher level service while hosting the NOCs in Sochi.
5 5 Dmitry Medvedev inspected Sochi PREPARATIONS During an official visit to Sochi the President of the Russian Federation has toured future Olympic sites and facilities and learnt about the Games preparation progress. Sochi 2014 President Dmitry Chernyshenko delivered a multimedia presentation to Dmitry Medvedev explaining that more than athletes and spectators would be involved in a test events program prior to the Games. Sochi will host an Alpine skiing European Cup in February 2011 and a number of national and international sport events in the years ahead. We are on track to host high-level sports events at each venue in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Dmitry Chernyshenko explained. GAMES Mascots contest launched on September 1st, 2010 A new website allows every Russian to play a part in designing and selecting the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Mascots. Until December 5th, 2010 everybody can share their ideas and pictures of the future Games mascots online. The nation will choose their mascots on February 7th, 2011 exactly three years prior to the Games. The decision will be made during a TV show when the audience will have the chance to evaluate the finalists and vote for their favorite mascots by SMS, online or by telephone. More NOCs experienced the spirit of Sochi Members of the National Olympic Committee of the USA and United States Ski and Snowboard Association and Sport Director of the Estonian Olympic Committee visited Sochi earlier this summer with the NOC visits. Their programs included venue tours at the Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon complex, Alpine centre Rosa Khutor, Sochi Olympic park, and the location of future Olympic villages. All the representatives were impressed by the scale and timing of the construction and development. Sochi 2014 is looking forward to welcoming more visits in the nearest future.
6 6 Meet the NOC Services Team The NOC Services team will operate as the only channel of communication between various departments within the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the NOCs. Our goal is to provide the NOCs with the best possible end-to-end client experience that guarantees optimal conditions for the athletes and deliver innovative solutions to the NOC delegations while offering them a truly unique Games experience and atmosphere with a strong sense of Russian hospitality. In the following months our NOC Services team will grow to include dedicated managers for a group of NOCs to offer your more personalized service and relations. However, should you have any additional questions or need any further information that will help you to maximize your Sochi 2014 experience our entire team is always ready to assist you. 8 8 Host City The largest Russian resort and the longest city in Europe is situated in Krasnodar Krai. The City of Sochi sprawls for 145 km along the shores of the Black sea against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Sochi is situated on the same latitude as Nice, Toronto and Vladivostok. A favorable location of the city between the Caucasian Mountains and the Black Sea guarantees the most northern subtropical climate on earth. As a result, its Krasnaya Polyana Mountains have great snow conditions and are largely protected from the wind. The city has 200 sunny days a year. The average temperature is +26ºC in summer and +6ºC in winter. Unique forests cover over hectares, of which are within central part of the city. There are many exotic subtropical trees, which easily adjusted to the local nature s conditions. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the square kilometers Caucasian Biosphere reserve, lies just north from the city. Sochi is a multicultural city of inhabitants representing more than 100 nationalities. Beautiful nature, scenic views of the mountains and sea attract over 3 million of tourists to get medical treatment and leisure annually. The city is divided into 4 administrative districts: Adler, Khosta, Central and Lazarevsky. Sochi and the nearest surroundings offer various types of resorts, hotels, tourist centers and campsites. The major architectural ensemble was constructed in the 30 s and the 50 s by the best Soviet architects. Sochi is accessible by plane, ferry, train and car. With the construction of the new international airport terminal the city can now welcome more visitors not only from Russia but from Europe and Asia. Sochi`s seaport provides a direct sea connection with Turkey, Greece, Georgia, and Ukraine. A new commercial port in Sochi is currently under construction.
9 9 Olympic Venues The venues for the XXII Olympic Games in Sochi will be located in 2 clusters: the first on the coast of the Black sea in Imeretinskaya Valley, and the second in the mountain region around the town of Krasnaya Polyana. The clusters are situated within 48 km of each other, which is less than a 45-minute drive by car and a 30-minute ride along a new railway. Each of the venues and facilities will be brand new and will leave an incredible winter sport legacy that will benefit the city, region and whole of Russia for years to come.
