1 AMERICAN CORNERS IN TURKEY ERZURUM 2011 WINTER UNIVERSIADE E-NEWSLETTER NR. 2010/5 The 25th Winter Universiade will be held on January 27 February 6 in Erzurum. It is expected that over 2,900 athletes from 57 nations will take part in the event. There are 12 sports included on the programme of the Universiade: mountain skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, short track, ski jumping, snowboarding, speed skating, synchronous figure skating. The 25 Winter Universiade Erzurum 2011 is undoubtedly an important opportunity in terms of the presentation of our country. The successful completion of this organization which is held for the first time in Turkey will also be a source of courage and confidence in terms of bringing and organizing other international organizations in our country. Therefore, it is our national responsibility to provide the excellent performing of the 25 Winter Universiade Erzurum Read More: A SEMINAR ON COMPETITIVENES, INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN BURSA In co-operation with the US Consulate General in Istanbul, the American Corner Bursa held a seminar on Competitiveness, Innovation and Entrepreneurship on Friday November 5, 2010.The speaker of the program was Mr. William Bates, the Vice President at the Council on Competitiveness, U.S.A. Mr. Bates manages the Council's outreach and message to Members of Congress, the Administration and Governors and serves currently as the Director of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils, a network of over 30 competitiveness councils from around the world committed to sharing best practices, identifying global competitiveness principles and seeking to better understand the drivers of national prosperity in a global economy. On the same evening Mr. Bates appeared on a local TV channel which is broadcasted nationwide where he expressed his views on the latest economic developments in the U.S.A. and in the world, 1

2 U.S. CONSUL GENERAL VISIT IN BURSA Mr. Scott Frederic Kilner, the newly-appointed US Consul General in Istanbul, visited the American Corner Bursa on Friday November 5, Mr. Kilner was received by the Board members of the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Bursa CCI), the host institution of the American Corner. He was informed about the economic structure of Bursa and the opportunities that it offers for the foreign investors. Following his meeting with the Board, Mr. Kilner visited the American Corner. He was briefed about the history of the AC and the role that it plays not only locally, but also regionally for the promotion of mutual understanding between Turkey and the United States. He was also informed about some of the activities held so far and the success stories. DVD PROGRAM IN İZMİR American Corner İzmir organized a DVD program about Renewable Energy on December 15, The DVD program organized for our students was very useful in terms of giving information about the renewable energy which is one of the most popular issues of our century. The students who attended the programs watched a kind of documentary in which different types of energy and their use in different parts of the world were explained in a really interesting way. FAO VISIT IN BURSA Mr. Donald Hall, a Captain in the Marine Corps, who is currently conducting FAO training in Turkey visited the American Corner Bursa on Friday December He was informed about the history and the activities of the American Corner. Mr. Hall was particularly interested in learning more about Turkey's economic growth in the past few years, how that growth has affected its integration into the global economy and also how that growth / integration has affected American investment and economic interests within Turkey. He had a conversation with the Secretary General of the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the host of the American Corner, for two hours and he was briefed in details on the economy of Bursa and Turkey. 2

3 VISIT OF CULTURAL ATTACHÉ OF U.S. EMBASSY IN İZMİR On November 10, 2010 Cultural Attache of U.S. Embassy, Thomas Pierce visited American Corner İzmir. During the visit, an introductory presentation about the American Corner İzmir s past and present activities was made. AC INTRODUCTION IN ERZURUM On December 13, 2010 American Corner Erzurum organized a program for prep grade students of English Language and Literature Department of Ataturk University, which is the host institution of AC Erzurum. In cooperation with the Fulbright ETA, dear Matthew who is lecturing at English Language and Literature Department, the students were invited to AC. After a brief introduction, some useful materials, books, booklets were disseminated to the students whose ages were between 18 and 20. During the session Fulbright Scholarship and its opportunities were introduced to the students as well. CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR PARTY IN BURSA In cooperation with AC Bursa,BIWA organized a Christmas and a New Year party at the last weekend of December to which the American community living in Bursa, together with the other foreigners and the local people, participated. The party held was not only fun for more than 80 participants, but also an introduction of the educational center for the autistic children. The items made by the disabled children were sold to the participants and the amount of money collected was donated to the center. The guests sang Christmas carols together, had food of various countries and the children drew New Year pictures and especially enjoyed spending time with Santa Claus who brought presents for all the children. 3

4 WHAT DO THE AMERICAN CORNERS OFFER We provide free access to current and reliable information about the U.S. via book collections, the Internet and through local programming (i.e. author readings, films, speaker programs, workshops, meetings, panels and exhibits) to the general public. Sponsored jointly by the U.S. Mission and the host organization, an American Corner serves as an information outpost. The multi-media, book and periodical collections are open and accessible.
