Job Description JOB TITLE: Education & Training Pharmacist- Support for 5 year Placement Students DIRECTORATE: Pharmacy GRADE: Band 7 REPORTS TO: ACCOUNTABLE TO: Pre-Registration Training Facilitator Head of Pharmacy Services and Clinical Director for Medicine Management JOB SUMMARY 1) To partake in clinical pharmacy duties ensuring core clinical pharmacy activities are undertaken (20%) 2) To plan and implement the undergraduate placement programme as part of the 5 year integrated MPharm Degree in line with the recommendations and requirements of Modernising Pharmacy Careers (MPC) and GPhC 3) To review and develop the 5 year MPharm undergraduate placements within the pharmacy department including quality assurance 4) To maintain and develop links with the University of Nottingham and potential other universities which offer 5 year undergraduate courses in the future 5) To act as a pre-registration tutor for both the placement students and potentially the funded pre-registration posts 6) Leadership, management and directorate/service support roles within the pharmacy education & training team 7) To take full part in the 7 day shifted rota and bank holidays duties (5%) The post holder will work at both QMC and City hospital. To provide training and support for members of pharmacy staff involved in preregistration training To provide clinical pharmacists and departmental leads with expert advice on the planning and delivery of pre-registration pharmacy training To support the matching process for the MPharm placements To act as a pre-registration tutor in accordance with the GPhC requirements and legislation and to provide support to other tutors within Nottingham University Hospitals To effectively performance manage staff including 1:1 s and appraisals in accordance with departmental and trust appraisal process To assist the trusts pre-registration training manager in gathering feedback and quality assurance data pertaining to pre-registration training for the placements To work collaboratively with other pre-registration training facilitators/tutors hosting 5 year placements to ensure the quality of training is consistent and to undertake peer review within this group
To coordinate and facilitate the pre-registration pharmacists in undertaking their audit project and develop the assessment process for these audits 2) To partake in clinical pharmacy duties ensuring core clinical pharmacy activities are undertaken in medicine Core clinical pharmacy activities To work in accordance with relevant pharmacy and Trust policies and procedures relating to medicines management. To ensure safe rational and effective prescribing by undertaking medication reconciliation, assessing suitability of prescribed medication, enabling use of patient s own medicines and patient self-administration, counseling (to optimise medicines use), and ensuring continuity of patient care into the community. Ensuring the efficient, safe and timely supply of medicines for individual patients during their stay in hospital, and when discharged, improving the patient experience in relation to the medication aspects of hospital discharge. Interpreting and requesting clinical tests to monitor and make recommendations to improve effectiveness of drug therapy. Pro-actively liaising with other members of the multidisciplinary team (medical staff, nurses, microbiologists, physiotherapists and dieticians) in order to ensure safe use of medicines. Making recommendations about medicines to improve patient outcomes and to encourage adherence to hospital formulary and national guidelines. Providing advice and guidance in relation to unlicensed medicines use and clinical trial medicines under the direction of the senior pharmacist for clinical trials Other To contribute to, facilitate or conduct clinical audits which are part of the Pharmacy audit plan. To participate in research, communicate results and if suitable register for a further degree To undertake and document continuing professional development. To contribute to the teaching and training of undergraduates, postgraduate students and other healthcare professionals. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required as agreed by senior staff. 3) Leadership, management and directorate/service support roles within the pharmacy education & training team To assist in the development and delivery of Pharmacy staff education and training, continuing professional development and KSF development. To provide training and assessment of Pharmacy staff and provide feedback on performance, to ensure the provision of a high quality service. To be involved in providing training and guidance to other Pharmacists and Technicians in the department who are involved in a practice based training role (training the trainers). To support the senior Education & Training pharmacists in the delivery, assessment and administration of the certificate and diploma in clinical Pharmacy, currently in association with De Montfort University. To act as a liaison between Nottingham University School of Pharmacy and NUH Pharmacy Department with any matters regarding undergraduate training and recruitment. To provide teaching and training to the Pre-registration Pharmacists in the Trust
To support the work of the Pre-registration Pharmacist tutors in the department and potentially to act as a Pre-registration tutor. To provide career advice about hospital Pharmacy and so to act as a recruitment link for Pre-registration Pharmacists and Resident Pharmacists from the University of Nottingham. To contribute to the training of ward based Technicians. Liaise and work alongside relevant pharmacy colleagues and directorate staff and managers in ensuring continuity and development of clinical and pharmacy services within the specialty. Maintain contact with and actively participating in regional and national specialty groups, and in also identifying best practice and incorporating it into NUH practice. Support the Assistant Clinical Services Lead and Assistant Head of Pharmacy (Clinical Services Lead) in delivering the best possible clinical pharmacy service Support the Assistant Clinical Services Lead and Assistant Head of Pharmacy (Clinical Services Lead and Assistant Head of Pharmacy Education & Training ) by developing KPIs that clearly demonstrate the contribution made by the pharmacy team Report all KPIs (delivered by the clinical pharmacy service and Education & Training) at regular intervals, as directed by the Assistant Head of Pharmacy Clinical Services Lead and Assistant Head of Pharmacy Education & Training e.g. activity data, contributions, service development contributions etc. Act as a role model Requirement to undertake and support relevant project work 4) To take full part in the 7 day shifted rota and bank holidays duties This post-holder will be required to provide clinical cover on weekends approximately once every two months this may vary with staffing levels. The arrangement for weekends worked is currently different at both sites. If working weekends at city for each weekend worked, a full-day will be recompensed in either the week before or after the weekend cover. At QMC the time will be claimed at toil which will need to be booked and taken by the individual There will also be a requirement to be part of the senior pharmacist back-up on-call rota as well as participating in rostered flexible shift working including evening, weekend and bank holiday arrangements over a 7 day period, in line with service requirements. WORKING CONDITIONS The post holder will be expected to spend their time between wards and clinics within the elective / non-acute services directorate, and various areas of the Pharmacy department. On a daily basis the post holder may be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, which may include body fluids. They may come in contact with very distressing situations notably on the wards.
