1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Nursing Assistant Job Reference No Department: Band: 3 Location/Base: Adult Mental Health, Inpatient Units Hours: 37.5 JOB SUMMARY The staff nurse role is designed to meet the holistic needs of service users/patients and carers, in a working environment conducive to staff development and wellbeing. The post holder supports the delivery of the adult mental health inpatient model through: Work as an integrated member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), working within a rotational shift system to support patients according to their care needs, some of whom may present with problematic or challenging behaviour. Contribute to, and participate in, the ongoing support of patients and their carers. Contribute to the protection of patients from abuse Contribute to the health, safety and security of patients and their environment. Obtain, transmit and store information relating to the delivery of a care service. 2 Communication and Relationship Skills Be aware of the Trust Communications Policy To attend and participate in staff meetings and shift handovers Analytical and Judgmental Skills To understand the need to escalate any patient, staff or environment concerns Planning and Organisational Skills To organise workload under the direction of the shift coordinator Patient/Client Care Engage with patients to follow the plan of care as directed by the nurse in charge, ensuring needs are met Support/enable patients to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance Support/enable patients to eat, drink and use toilet facilities. Support/enable patients to achieve physical comfort. Support/enable patients to manage their domestic and personal resources. Make written records under the supervision of the registered nurse. Give verbal reports on patients care, needs and daily outcomes. Contribute to the support of patients during programme of care/rehabilitation. To ensure that all care aspects follow a recovery approach maximising the strengths of the patient. Responsibilities for Policy and Service Development To work within Trust policies and procedures. Responsibilities for Finance Handle patients cash and property in line with the Trust s Standing Financial Instructions. Responsibilities for HR May support student nurses. May participate in the internal induction and demonstration of own duties to new staff. Responsibility for Information Resources With support/guidance from qualified nurse can update patient records. Research and Development Participate in internal audits. Freedom to Act Works semi-autonomously during escort duties, ability to work within a minimum of direct supervision. The post holder will be expected to function under the guidance of a trained nurse, either supervised directly or working independently if required. However, you will be expected to work semi-autonomously when assigned to internal and external patient escort duties. 2

3 Job Flexibility To show flexibility by working a rotational shift pattern including night duty and weekends according to the needs of the ward and the wider service. To move clinical area at either, short-notice, or no-notice in order to meet the changing needs of the service. To participate in the process of internal rotation as and when required. Knowledge Demonstrate an understanding of the issues surrounding mental illness. Can demonstrate basic IT skills Understands their duties and responsibilities under the Data Protection Act with regard to patient confidentiality. Experience Working in a caring environment, e.g. nursing home, care home, hospital ward, home carer etc. Experience of caring for people with mental health conditions. Working as part of a team.
