QUALIFICATIONS: Assist in the provision of an efficient and effective pharmaceutical service. To attend an appropriate college to obtain a BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science (Pharmaceuticals) / NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Pharmacy Services To dispense and issue prescriptions, using selected computerised systems, in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures To provide stock supplies on pharmaceutical products through a top-up service to wards To undertake aseptic and technical preparation of pharmaceutical products under supervision 4 GCSEs at Grade C [or above] in Maths, English, Biology and Chemistry or similar qualification, e.g. Science [to include Chemistry and Biology Evidence of Accreditation of Education and Prior Learning (APEL) and relevant experience of working in a dispensary. BTEC Level 2 qualification or GNVQ Intermediate in Science or equivalent qualification. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. To attend a BTEC/NVQ/QCF Level 3 course in Pharmacy Services, to achieve the BTEC/NVQ3/QCF certificate and to undertake any associated necessary study in order to comply with the requirements of The Royal Pharmaceutical Society for pharmacy technician registration.
2 2. To carry out routine dispensing and labelling of prescriptions using selected computerised systems for inpatients, discharge patients and outpatients. This includes dispensing named-patients drugs, unlicensed drugs, CDs and extemporaneous preparations under supervision and in accordance with standard operating procedures. 3. To carry out technical duties, on a rotational basis such as the maintenance of emergency drug boxes, emergency cupboard, filing of prescriptions, vaccine supply, clinical trials, dispensing venolink packs and pre-labelled discharge packs to wards and departments in accordance with pharmacy procedures. 4. To participate in the ward based one stop dispensing service which involves checking patients' own drugs and assessing their suitability for use, arranging re-supply of patients' drugs, liaising with G.Ps, nursing homes, community chemists, medical and ward staff, under the supervision of the Chief Technician, Medicines Management. 5. To attend to outpatients coming to the pharmacy for prescriptions, collect prescription payments, deal with patients who are exempt from paying and those who have no money with them, helping to complete relevant forms and provide and receive information in a sensitive and professional nature, ensuring confidentiality at all times, referring to a pharmacist or technician as necessary. 6. To counsel patients on their medication, and issue patient information leaflets as part of NVQ3/QCF training under the supervision of a pharmacist or qualified assessor. 7. To prepare extemporaneous preparations (products from raw materials) for individual patients in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice, regarding COSHH, CHIP, Health and Safety Legislation and using approved master formulae. (NVQ3/QCF Assessment Training), using the laminar fume cupboard as appropriate. 8. To operate selected computerised systems, observing and enforcing systems of work designed to ensure the accuracy, integrity and security of data, with particular respect to resource management and data protection. 9. To participate in the packing, distribution, turnover and storage of stock pharmaceutical supplies to allocated wards and departments by means of the topping up system or in response to requisitions from wards, as directed by the Chief Technician, Procurement and Distribution. 10. To participate, under supervision, in the preparation of total parenteral nutrition products, and any other aseptic work, including preparation of documentation and calculations using computerised systems. 11. To participate in procedures to control stock in dispensary, including the monitoring of expiry dates, checking of stock and advising the Dispensary Manager of low stock. 12. To process telephone, face to face, fax, and personal enquiries in a professional manner, referring to senior staff as appropriate. 13. To communicate effectively with a wide range of people both within and outside the organisation. These will include: patients, nursing staff, medical staff, pharmacy staff, community pharmacies, nursing homes, GPs and other healthcare professionals. 14. To manage own work and development. This will include internal work assessments, college work, tasks and workload according to departmental priorities. 15. To ensure care, attention to detail and accuracy is maintained at all times when dispensing prescriptions, using calculations for drug doses and undergoing tasks. Other:
3 16. To participate in the introduction and use of new technology and new techniques in accordance with the needs of the service. 17. To understand and identify the principles of NVQ/QCF, work procedures and practices to meet standards and competencies associated with job role. 18. To participate in the weekend and bank holiday rota. 19. To undertake the outpatient waiting time survey and audit of the service as directed by the Dispensary Manager. 20. To be responsible for own Continual Professional Development, to attend appropriate training courses as may be thought necessary for the benefit of the service and to encourage other staff to undertake further training. 21. To assist in the training of Assistant Technical Officers, Trainee Technicians and other pharmacy staff as directed by senior staff and pharmacy procedures. 22. To maintain a high standard of service to patients, wards, departments, visitors and other healthcare professionals and to follow at all times the professional code of conduct. 23. To act as a role model for new staff and other members of the technical support team. 24. To carry out any other related duties which may be required. HEALTH AND SAFETY 25. To carry out procedures designed to maintain the quality of equipment and the environment of the pharmacy, and observe current legislation, departmental procedures, Health and Safety regulations and quality standards. 26. Report any deficiency in health and safety systems or documentation to own line manager or manager of area concerned. 27. Attend Occupational Health for health surveillance / vaccination following accidents and for monitoring as laid down by Trust policies. 28. To co-operate with and attend training provided for health and safety purposes.
4 PERSON SPECIFICATION TRAINEE PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PRIORITY SELECTION CRITERIA METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Essential Demonstrate accurate numeracy and literacy skills / Test Desirable 4 GCSE s at Grade C or above in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and English or similar qualification. Evidence of Accreditation of Education and Prior Learning (APEL) and relevant experience of working in a Pharmacy BTEC Level 2 qualification or GNVQ Intermediate in Science or equivalent qualification. Willing to take direction and consistently adhere to policies, procedures and standards. Keen to learn new skills and desire to undertake training opportunities. Good team member and able to communicate with all healthcare staff and patients. Ability to be organized, systematic and accurate with good attention to detail. Ability to study and to travel to work / study venue. Ability to work weekends and Bank Holidays and be flexible in hours worked during the week. Honest, trustworthy, reliable and able to maintain strict confidentiality at all times. Able to prioritise and work on own initiative. Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
