History The 17 houses built in Crick Road towards the end of the nineteenth century were mostly in pairs, with Jacobean as well as more traditional North Oxford Gothic detailing. In 1879, the Dragon School formally known as the Oxford Preparatory School moved from Balliol Hall in St. Giles to number 17 Crick Road, which became known as the School House. In 1895 the school moved to its current location in nearby Bardwell Road. Number 12 Crick Road was designed by the Architect Frederick Codd and built in 1877; the architectural features which are so indicative of his style are very prominent throughout the building. Description The property is a substantial detached family home built with extensive accommodation over four floors and located at one of the most desirable addresses in Central North Oxford. On entering the property via the inner vestibule there is an elegant hallway leading to the principle reception rooms. The dining room, drawing room and study benefit from high ceilings, decorative cornicing, ornate fire places and large windows which allow immense light into the rooms. Of particular note is the bay window in the drawing room and the French doors in the study which offer a stunning vista over the rear garden. The spacious kitchen breakfast room offers an array of fitted units and Aga and could be redesigned to incorporate the adjacent office into a utility room or additional reception area. The property also benefits from a garden room which is currently used as a Gym with adjacent shower room and cloakroom facilities. The Gym also has a southerly aspect with access to the garden and terrace. There are two staircases to the first floor and main staircase sweeps up from the entrance hall to a quarter landing which leads to two bedrooms, a cloakroom and the rear access to the stairs. Further stairs lead to the first floor and principle bedrooms with high ceilings, light and airy rooms, fitted wardrobes and both with en suite bathrooms and shower room, one of which shares access from the first floor landing. A staircase leads to the second floor accommodation comprising two attic bedrooms, a bathroom and a sitting room, ideal for an au pair. From the rear hallway access is to the basement with a utility area, two cellar rooms and a strong room.
Outside The property is accessed via a gravel driveway with parking for several cars and partly enclosed by a low brick wall with mature hedging. A well maintained formal garden with a selection of specimen trees and ornamental shrubs is accessed via French doors from the study and also from the gym. The doors lead out to the semi circular terrace which commands a central position to the garden. Further steps lead down to the lawn which is surrounded on all sides by formal flower borders. A gravel pathway extends around the edge of the enclosed garden and is flanked on both sides with mature box hedging. The garden has a southerly aspect and offers immense privacy and seclusion.
