If a police officer pulls you over for speeding, she could greet you with Good morning, but probably not Hi. In Spanish the choice of how to address a person is reflected in the language in three ways: the vocabulary, the ending on the verb, and the words for you and your. Informal greetings Informal greetings are used with friends, family, coworkers, and children. Hola. Cómo estás? Hi. How are you? Hola. Qué tal? Hi. How are you doing? Buenos días. Cómo estás? Good Morning. How are you? Formal Greetings Formal greetings are used when you are not familiar with the person, when the person is older than you, or when your relationship with the person requires formality. Buenos días. Farewells These are for either formal or informal situations: Hasta luego. Adiós. Buenas noches. Responding to a Greeting The usual response to Cómo estás? or Cómo está usted? is: Muy bien. or Muy bien gracias. to which you could add in a formal context: Y usted? Other possible responses to Cómo estás? are: No muy bien. Regular. Asi asi. Mas ó menos. and in an informal context: Y tú? With this we have three combinations of formality: formal to formal (adults who have just met or don t know eachother well) Cómo está?
