+ What Really Happeed: Studyig 1999: MPhys from The Uiversity of Liverpool, UK I wated to study medicie but I did t get the high-school grades. I maaged to get ito Physics, havig ot studied maths for 2 years After a difficult degree, I left. Util Ja 2005: PhD from Liverpool Joh Moores Uiversity, UK I realised I missed sciece! So I got a PhD place to study astroomy for the first time Ad LOVED it! Super-supportive group
+ What Really Happeed: Swibure I 2004 2006: Research Assistat, Swibure Uiversity I was offered a 2 year research positio i early 2004. I arrived Sept 2004.!I LOVED MELBOURNE! I leared about galaxy groups ad how to fiish papers. I had to start applyig for ew jobs i Dec 2005. I applied for 8 ad was iterviewed for 1. I May 2006, I was gettig desperate, I was told that a postdoc at Swibure was about to be advertised. I applied ad was shortlisted ad started my 2d 2 year positio at Swibure i Oct 2006.
+ What Really Happeed: Swibure II 2006 2009: Research Associate, Swibure Uiversity Here I started idepedet collaboratios ad joied the WiggleZ survey i early 2007 (but papers did t come util 2009). I started applyig for jobs i Oct 2007. I applied for 13 jobs, oly 1 of which I was iterviewed for. I accepted a offer to be Director s Assistat & the STACK techical Secretary role to exted my cotract for a year. I made 9 applicatios over 2008. From these I was iterviewed 3 times. I tured a job dow i May 2008 as it was't a step up, eve though it might reder me jobless Fially the last job I applied for, with a semi-offer i had to leave research, I was offered the AAO positio ad I decided to give astroomy 1 last shot.
+ What Really Happeed: AAO 2009 2011: Research Associate, AAO I joied the AAO ad the GAMA survey i July 2009. 3 year positio. 30% telescope support. Regular AAOmega spectrograph support. Here I have had regular ecouragemet which has helped me idetify my stregths ad use them. I discovered I ejoy surfig the wave Got ivolved i Wome i Astroomy. 2011 2014: Research Fellow, AAO 5 year positio. 50% telescope support (AAOmega Istrumet Scietist). 10 moths materity leave 2013. Still supervised PhD studet ad fiished paper o leave. Retured to apply for ARC Future Fellowship Retur-to-Work grat 2015 Now: ARC Future Fellow, AAO
+ Returig To Work After Materity Leave I used to work 10am-7pm, I was away a week a moth ad every other moth was at the telescope workig 16hr ights. I retured 3 days a week for 1 year ad ow work 9-5 Moday-Thursday. It took early 2 years before I travelled domestically ad was over 2 years before I travelled iteratioally. It has take me a little while to work out how to do my ow research i that model but I m gettig there Self care is eve more importat ow tha ever before!
+ What Really Happeed: Next I I December 2016 I am takig part i the Homeward Boud Leadership Iitiative http://homewardboudprojects.com.au This brigs 78 female scietists from aroud the world together o a leadership course o a boat headig to Atarctica. Goal: to create a trasformatioal isight ito your leadership midset, ad to sigificatly ehace your uderstadig of your ifluece as a woma ad leader i our world I expect to brig back ew ideas from what is workig i other scieces ad other coutries. I expect to lear ew isights ito what it meas to be a leader ad to motivate a diverse team to cotribute their very best.
