SCOPE OF THE PRACTICE Enrolled Nurse Scope of Practice: Enrolled nurses practise under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse or nurse practitioner to deliver nursing care and health education across the life span to health consumers in community, residential or hospital settings. Enrolled nurses contribute to nursing assessments, care planning, implementation and evaluation of care for health consumers and/or families/whanau. The registered nurse maintains overall responsibility for the plan of care. Enrolled nurses assist health consumers with the activities of daily living, observe changes in health consumers conditions and report these to the registered nurse, administer medicines and undertake other nursing care responsibilities appropriate to their assessed competence (NCNZ,2010) Enrolled Nurse - Limited Scope of Practice Enrolled Nurse with a limited scope of practice assists registered nurses to deliver nursing care to individuals in community, residential and hospital settings in the area which their scope of practice is endorsed. (i.e.; Acute [includes medical, surgical, perioperative], Rehabilitation, Health of Older People) They perform delegated interventions from the nursing care plan to provide care and comfort for individuals groups, assist and support clients with activities of daily living, observe and report changes in individual/group conditions and behaviours, safeguard dignity and promote independence and health and safety. The Enrolled Nurse with a limited scope of practice does not undertake independent nursing assessments or plan and evaluate nursing interventions. Enrolled Nurses within this scope may be required to practise in a specific area based on their practicing certificate (NCNZ, 2010). Relevant Area of Practice: As defined by Nursing Council of New Zealand as per the endorsements on the nurse s practicing certificate.

PROBLEM COMPLEXITY There will be a requirement to be able to prioritise issues and negotiate time frames, while still providing a quality customer service.

There will be demands to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and quality of information. Failure to do so could impact on the organisation in terms of organisational effectiveness and timeframes. Will refer to Nurse/Midwife Manager, Nurse/ Midwife Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Registered Nurses/ Midwives for direction or second opinion. SCOPE FOR ACTION The active process of directing, guiding, monitoring and influencing the outcome of an individual s practice. Direction is provided directly when the registered nurse is actually present, observes, works and directs the person; direction is provided indirectly when the registered nurse works in the same facility or organisation as the supervised person but does not constantly observe his/her activities. The registered nurse must have a current practising certificate and be available for reasonable access ie. Must be available at all times on the premises or immediately contactable by telephone (in community settings).(nursing Council of New Zealand,2010) Discretion is required to be exercised in releasing confidential information to the appropriate parties. DIMENSION OF THE POSITION Will be responsible to the Charge Nurse/Midwife Manager for the achievement of agreed objectives and operates within the confines of CM Health.
