What s Zinio? Zinio is the Whitby Public Library s e-magazine service. Using the Zinio service through the Whitby Public Library, you can checkout and download e-magazines from the Library s collection. Once you checkout and download the e-magazine, it never expires or needs to be returned. These instructions are for borrowing e-magazines with a Windows 8 tablet. However, you can use a PC, laptop, or other mobile devices to borrow e-magazines. How Do I Use Zinio On My Windows 8 Tablet? To borrow e-magazines from the Whitby Public Library, you will need to create 2 accounts and download the Zinio app. One account is a Whitby Public Library e- magazine account, which you need to access our collection. The next account is a Zinio account, which is used to read the magazines. Download the Zinio App You must have the Zinio app on your Windows 8 tablet to be able to read the Whitby Public Library s e-magazines. To download the Zinio app, visit the Windows Store and search for Zinio using the search tool. Once you ve found it, tap on install. 2
Create a Zinio Account Once you have the app on your Windows 8 tablet, open the app and swipe the screen from right to left until you see a box that says join now. Tap on the box and enter your email address and a password, and then tap on join. You will see a confirmation that you are signed into your Zinio account, as well as options to change your password. This means you have successfully created a Zinio account. Create a Whitby Public Library e-magazine Account Using your Internet browser, visit the Whitby Public Library s website at www.whitbylibrary.on.ca and tap on Zinio. Tap create new account in the top right-hand corner of the page. 3
A box will pop up on your screen asking for your library card number. In this box, enter your library barcode number (without spaces). Then click on Next. The next box will ask you for your first and last name, your email address and a password. You must use the same email address you used for your Zinio account. We suggest you also use the same password so it is easy to remember. Enter this information into the corresponding boxes and then tap on Create Account. 4
Browsing and Checking Out From the main WPL Zinio account page you will see the magazine titles that are available for you to borrow. The titles are listed in alphabetical order to browse, or you can search for a title in the title search box. Once you have found a magazine title you would like to borrow, tap on the cover. The next page will show you the most recent issue at the top and available back issues below. To borrow the current issue, tap on the checkout button next to the magazine cover. To borrow a back issue, tap on the cover of the back issue and then on complete checkout. You will receive a message letting you know that the e-magazine has successfully been checked out. Note: If you are reading the e-magazine on your Windows 8 tablet, do not tap on Start Reading to read your e-magazine. To read your e-magazine you will use the Zinio app using the instructions below. 5
Reading e-magazines To read the e-magazines that you have checked out, go to the Zinio app. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the app menu area, and then tap on read. This opens the app s library. As soon as you open the library, the e-magazines that you have checked out will begin to download to the device, so long as the device is connected to a wireless Internet network. To read an e-magazine, simply tap on the cover image. Swipe the screen from right to left to advance pages. Pinch your thumb and forefinger to zoom in. Spread your thumb and forefinger apart to zoom out. If you swipe down from the top of the screen, page spreads and page numbers will appear at the top for quick navigation. You will also see a star at the bottom of the screen that you can tap on to create a bookmark. Next to the bookmark button is the text view button, which allows you to view only the text of the page you are currently on. You will also see the contents button, which will show you the table of contents for the e-magazine. 6
Tap the screen to make this navigation pane disappear. To go to a different e-magazine, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap on the arrow in the top left-hand corner of the screen. 7
Deleting e-magazines Because magazine issues take up storage space on your device, you may want to delete downloaded magazines that you ve already read. To delete an e-magazine, open the Zinio app, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap on read. Here you ll see all of the e-magazines that are downloaded to your tablet. To delete an e-magazine, tap and hold and drag slightly downward on top of the e-magazine cover. This will put a blue box around the magazine cover, and the top and bottom menu screens will appear. In the bottom left-hand corner tap on delete. In the pop-up box tap on from device. This will allow you to easily re-download the e-magazine again from your library, but it will no longer be taking up memory space on your device. You will get a message to confirm the deletion. To confirm, tap on ok. 8
