1 How MFLC Counselors Encrypt their Verizon Motorola Razr or Sprint/AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Smartphone

2 Before you Begin the Process On the Samsung Galaxy S II you may have to set your screen unlock password prior to encrypting the device. Typically only a password will work, other options such as face unlock and PIN will not suffice and you will be unable to begin the encryption process. The Smartphone may require a full charge and/or being connected to a charger to run the encryption process. Once the encryption process begins be prepared to enjoy some coffee or take a short walk if you have a Samsung Galaxy S II, it can take quite a while to encrypt everything but it doesn t require any user intervention once things get started. The Verizon Motorola Razr is a bit faster with the encryption process. If the device supports encryption of the SD card (the Samsung Galaxy SII does), please enabled that once the device encryption process has completed. Choose to encrypt the entire SD card. If there are any options about selective encryption, skipping certain types of files, or fast encryption please disable those. The Samsung Galaxy S II has the fast encryption option but you will not want to make this selection.

3 Quick Directions for Motorola Razr For those who are relatively tech savvy and would like quick directions, here is how to encrypt the Motorola Droid Razr Smartphone Touch Apps > Settings > Security & Screen Lock > Data encryption. You will be prompted to set up a screen lock. Touch OK. Touch Screen lock. Select the type of screen lock you prefer. For data encryption, PIN and Password are supported. You may not select None or Pattern. Choose your PIN or Password and confirm it. From the Security & Screen Lock menu, select and touch Data encryption again. You will need both Memory card and Device data encryption on the phone. Memory card: Encrypts files you save to your device's memory card Device data: Encrypts all personal data on your phone

4 Quick Directions for Samsung Galaxy S II Encrypt your device and SD card (if you have one) With the Samsung Galaxy S III, you can encrypt your device and your SD card if you have one. Once encrypted, you ll have to enter a password each time you either turn the phone on or connect to the SD card. This does give you a nice layer of security, but it pretty much marries the SD card to the phone. So, regular SD card backups become a necessity. To encrypt either the device or the SD card, do the following: Start with a fully charged device Plug your device into its charger Open Settings Scroll down and tap Security Tap either Encrypt device or Encrypt SD card (see screen shot to the right) If encrypting the SD card, select Encrypt SD card, Full Encryption, Exclude Multimedia files Remember: You will not be able to start this process if your device is not fully charged.

5 This should look familiar as this is the Home page to your Magellan issued Verizon Motorola Razr Smartphone. This phone is turned horizontally so some of the buttons you typically see at the bottom of the phone when it is turned vertically are now being seen out to the right-hand side. If you touch the screen and swipe your finger left or right you will likely see additional icons. Notice the CareP icon shortcut on the upper left-hand side of the screen to get you oriented. I ll swipe my finger to the left to see my other icons on my additional home screen pages.

6 Looks like I have an additional CareP icon on this page for very easy access from any page. How convenient! From here I will touch the Apps icon in the middle of the right hand side of the phone where the yellow arrow is pointing.

7 Notice all the icons are listed on my screen in alphabetical order! Again, how convenient! From here I will need to touch my screen and swipe it to the left so that I turn the page to the right and advance to the next page of apps. I m looking for the Settings icon.

8 Now I m on the next page of apps.but I only see G through P. I ll need to advance to S in order to see Settings. So I need to touch my Smartphone screen and drag it again to the left so that I advance to the next page.

9 Alright.now I see the Settings icon. We ll select it by tapping our finger on that icon circled in yellow.

10 Choices choices choices. Fortunately we only need to select one on this screen. I have placed all the menu selections on this page but we only need to look for Security & Screen Lock. You will need to touch the screen at the bottom of the screen and move your finger upward on the screen in order to scroll down the menu options and arrive at Security &Screen Lock. When you see that option as pointed out below by the yellow arrow, select that option by touching the screen on that option with your finger. For the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II (no pictures) you will need to go to the Settings tab, then to Security, and then to Encrypt device and to Encrypt SD card (assuming you have an SD card). Under Encrypt device you will touch Encrypt device at the bottom of the screen assuming you have enough battery power to complete the task. Under Encrypt SD card you should make a check mark appear to the right of Encrypt SD card and Full encryption before selecting Continue at the bottom of the screen. You will need to confirm your PIN by entering it and then select Next. Then on the Enable SD card encryption? select Apply.

11 On the Verizon Motorola Razr you only need to look for Data encryption. You will need to touch the screen at the bottom of the screen and move your finger upward on the screen in order to scroll down the menu options and arrive at Data encryption. When you see that option as pointed out below by the yellow arrow, select that option by touching the screen on that option with your finger.

12 Now you need to touch on both boxes on the right so that a blue box appears in them. Once you touch on both boxes and get a blue check mark to appear in them, you re almost done with encrypting your Smartphone!

13 Now that both boxes have a blue checkmark in them, click on Apply in the upper right-hand corner (circled in yellow).

14 The following message will appear on your phone Modify Encryption Encrypts all personal data on your device. From now on, all files saved to your memory card will be encrypted. Existing files remain unaffected. This process may take several minutes during which you cannot use your phone. Your phone will reboot in order to initiate encryption. You should touch the word Proceed on the screen (as indicated by the yellow circle).

15 The following message will appear on your phone Power off...preparing to encrypt files on your phone. You don t have to do anything the encryption process has begun!

16 Encrypting Wait while your phone is being encrypted. % complete Little Android Guy Your phone will begin to turn off and you will see something like what is seen above (it s the best I could do!). The percentage will climb as the process gets closer to completion. This process will take several minutes to complete. You don t have to do anything the Little Android Guy is working hard inside your Smartphone to encrypt your data!

17 Now your Smartphone begins to power up after it shuts all the way down. Here again you don t have to do anything this is just to give you an idea of what to expect. Expect the phone to power up as normal. Typically it says Droid in a computer voice and the Smartphone sounds like it s about to transport you to another dimension. At this point your Smartphone should be encrypted and you can begin using your phone again.
