1 Using 3M CLOUD LIBRARY BOFG JJ To Download Library Books Onto Your KINDLE FIRE To borrow an e-book from the Ocean County Library system, you need to have a valid Ocean County Library card (less than $25 in fines), an address, and an Amazon account. You will need to install a free app called 3M Cloud Library onto your device. TO INSTALL THE 3M CLOUD LIBRARY APP: Please note that it is not possible to download this app through the Appstore on the Kindle. You need to get the 3M Cloud Library app by going to a website called slideme.org. Follow the instructions listed below. 1) Go to the Settings on your Kindle. The location of the Settings depends on the type of Kindle Fire that you have. If you have the original not the HD or HD+ - tap the picture of the little gear at the top of the device. 2) Tap More. 3) Tap Device (you will need to scroll down to see the word). 4) Scroll down to Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources. Tap On. A warning message will come up; tap OK. 5) Tap the Home button (the picture of the little house) at the bottom of the screen. 6) Tap Web at the top of the screen. 7) Tap in the white address bar and type slideme.org. Tap Go. 1

2 8) You will see a white box beneath the words Application Search. Type 3M Cloud in the box and tap Search. 9) Tap on the words 3M Cloud Library (the first result that appears). 10) Tap the red Download button. 11) The words Download Complete will appear in the top left corner of the screen. 12) A Notification Number will appear in the top left corner of the screen. Tap the number. 13) Tap the Download Complete box. 14) Tap Install. 15) Tap Open to begin searching for library books. Go to Step #1 below. 16) If you don t want to get library books at this time, tap Done to close the window and return to the Internet. To return to your Home screen, tap the picture of the house at the bottom of the screen. The 3M Cloud Library app will appear on your carousel. TO BORROW A LIBRARY E-BOOK: Tap the 3M Cloud Library app to open the program. If you are opening the app for the first time, follow steps 1 through 6. 1) Tap Connect to Your Library on the Welcome screen. 2) Tap in the circle next to US and then tap Next. 3) Scroll down to NJ and tap in the circle next to it. Tap Next. 4) Tap in the circle next to Ocean County Library. Tap Next. 2

3 5) Type in your library card number and the password that you use to reserve items and access your library account online. Tap Login. If you don t know your password, please visit the library. 6) On the Legal Terms screen, tap Agree. To search for and check out a book: 1) On the first screen that you see, books are arranged on Shelves. The shelves consist of books that are arranged by subject or genre so that you can browse the collection. 2) To check out a book that is on a shelf, tap the picture of the book. 3) Tap the green Check Out button. The book will download and open automatically. Other Ways to Search: 1) Tap the Categories button at the top of the screen. 2) Tap the subject of the books that you want to browse through. 3) Tap the green Check Out button beside the book that you want to borrow. If the book is not available, tap the Add to Hold List button. Or: 1) Tap the Search button at the top of the screen. 2) Type the title or author of the book that you are looking for in the white search box at the top of the page and tap Go on the keyboard. You can also go to the library s main catalog (which includes the ability to search the entire library s collection, not only e-books) by tapping Go to Full Library Catalog in the center of the screen. 3

4 3) To limit your search to books that are available to check out right now, tap Refine Search Result at the top of the screen. Tap in the circle next to Books Available for Checkout and tap the back arrow at the bottom of the screen. READING A LIBRARY BOOK: 1) To turn the pages of the book, swipe your finger across the screen. 2) To change the font size or brightness, you need to access the Settings Bar. To do this, tap anywhere in the white space that surrounds the text. Tap the image of the double A that appears at the top of the screen (beside the magnifying glass) to adjust the font size, margin size, or brightness. You can also put the book in night mode to make it easier to read in the dark. Tap the center of the screen again to make the Settings Bar disappear. 3) To search for a specific word or section in the book, tap the white space that surrounds the text to access the Settings Bar. Tap the image of the magnifying glass. Type in the word(s) that you re looking for and tap Search on the keyboard. 4) To add a bookmark, tap the white space that surrounds the text to access the Settings Bar. Next, tap the image of the little square in the top right corner. A picture of a little Post-It Note appears! Type any notes (if any) that you wish to make and tap Add Bookmark. 5) To close the book that you re reading, tap the white space that surrounds the text to access the Settings Bar. Tap the image of the bookshelf in the top left corner to close the book. This takes you back 4

5 to the My Books screen, where you can view all of the books that you have checked out. TO RETURN A LIBRARY E-BOOK: 1) Open the 3M Cloud Library app. 2) Tap the My Books button at the top of the screen. 3) Tap the List View button at the top right corner of the screen. 4) Tap the white space next to the image of the book that you want to return. Tap the red Check In button at the bottom of the screen. Tap Return Book. OTHER THINGS TO KNOW: 1) There is a limit of 5 e-books that can be checked out at one time. 2) 3M Cloud Library e-books have a 21-day borrowing period (this can t be changed). They are returned automatically. 3) 3M Cloud Library e-books cannot be renewed. 4) There is no need to logout of your account, unless you don t want someone else who uses the device to access your books. To logout, tap Account Profile at the bottom of the My Books screen. Next, tap Log Out Account. Please note that if you do this, you will have to follow steps 1 through 6 under the To Borrow a Library E-Book section above in order to search again. 5) In order to be notified that books you placed on hold are ready to be checked out, you must provide 3M Cloud Library with your address. To do this, tap Account Profile at the bottom of the My Books screen. 5

6 6) 3M Cloud Library automatically keeps track of books that you ve previously read. To view this list, tap Reading History at the bottom of the My Books screen. 7) To contact the Ocean County Library for technical assistance, tap the Menu Button at the bottom of the screen (the picture next to the back arrow).
