Dear Colleagues, We have the great pleasure to invite you to participate in the XVII International Paavo Nurmi Symposium on Future directions of hypertension - Tailor-made diagnostics and treatment,, on the 7-9th of September, 2011. XVII Paavo Nurmi symposium Paavo Nurmi was a supreme Finnish runner, who during the course of three Olympic Games won nine gold medals and three silvers. Although he took great care of his physical health, he suffered from myocardial infarction at the age of 60 and later also from stroke, despite the absence of all the known risk factors. He died from multiple complications of atherosclerosis at the age of 76. As Nurmi realized that the causes of atherosclerosis were far from being understood, he created a foundation in his name in 1968 for the purpose of financing research on cardiovascular diseases. The present symposium focusing on hypertension will be the 17th one funded by the Paavo Nurmi Foundation. The picturesque city of Porvoo is located about 50 km to the East of Helsinki, Finland, and is easily accessible for international participants by a 30-min drive from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. The symposium venue (http://www.haikko.fi), is conveniently located by the Baltic sea about 6 km outside Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland. The programme will include state-of-the-art lectures given by invited speakers, with a special emphasis on future aspects of clinical hypertension. The presentations will cover several timely issues including adaptive immune system and hypertension, cardiovascular risk prediction, endothelium-derived substances, hypertension genetics, life style and blood pressure, mineralocorticoid receptors, novel treatment modalities, pharmacogenetics, renovascular hypertension, reactive oxygen species, the renin-angiotensin system, and water-free sodium storage. We look forward to seeing you in, Finland in September 2011. On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committees,
Symposium Venue The symposium will take place in, Finland (http://www.haikko.fi), located 6 km outside the city of Porvoo, and 30- min drive from Helsinki-Vantaa international airport. Accommodation Hotel rooms for symposium delegates have been reserved, located in the historic Manor House or in the nearby Spa & Conference Hotel. Official language The official language of the symposium is English. Social Programme Welcome Reception and Symposium Dinner are included in the programme. The Haikko Spa is located by the sea and in the middle of a beautiful park, which provides versatile possibilities for leisure-time activities.
