3 Welcome Address Dear Colleagues and Friends Since nearly 8 years it is a sound tradition of the SFB/TR 19 to hold the international Summer School symposium with great success and popularity at one of the three locations Berlin, Greifswald and Tübingen of the SFB Transregio 19. It s now a great pleasure to invite you to attend the 2011 Summer School of the Sonderforschungsbereich Transregio 19: Inflammatory Cardiomyopathy Molecular Pathogenesis and Treatment. The SFB/TR 19 comprises a consortium of scientists from the Universities of Berlin, Greifswald and Tübingen. A special focus of the Summer School 2011 will be on Molecular Mechanisms and Consequences of Inflammatory Cardiomyopathy: State of the Art and Future Challenges. A characteristic feature of the SFB/TR 19 is the investigation of basic aspects of inflammatory cardiomyopathy (DCMi) in close connection with clinical questions. Leslie Cooper has highlighted in his recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine that viral and postviral myocarditis remain major causes of acute and chronic dilated cardiomyopathy leading to a substantial disease burden in the community. Accordingly and with respect to the major topic of the SFB/TR19 new aspects of the etiology and basic research of the mechanisms leading to inflammatory cardiomyopathy will be presented during the Summer School by international approved scientists. The SFB/TR19 Summer School is primarily intended for young scientists to encourage their interest and enthusiasm for research. We are looking very forward with great pleasure to this translational meeting within the exciting city of Berlin and to lively discussions promoting future research in this field.
