The post holder may be based at any premises the University occupies and may be required to work at any University site or any other reasonable location where the University is undertaking its business. GENERAL The Faculty Arts & Technology is one of two faculties within the University and includes the Schools of Media, Art and Design, Education and Liberal Arts. The Media School offers undergraduate degree programmes in Popular Music and Music Business, Journalism, Sports Journalism, Magazine Journalism and Production, Film Production, Television Production, Media Production and Animation. Postgraduate provision includes MAs in Journalism and Film Production and new postgraduate programmes in Music and Animation/VFX are in development. We have a growing number of research students working in areas encompassing the School's academic disciplines. Recruiting to this post in Music reflects a broad set of developments within the Music and Media subject area during 2016, that includes a growing and increasingly diverse student population; the design and construction of a digitally networked suite of rehearsal and recording facilities and music labs, that allow for innovative teaching, learning and production activities; and an enhanced undergraduate portfolio that expands on our successful JAMES accredited Popular Music programme, alongside new provision in Music Business and Creative Music Technology.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible to: Academic Subject Leader Music and Media (Line Manager) 1. Primary Functions 1.1 To contribute to the teaching and development of the undergraduate Music and Media courses, particularly Popular Music and the forthcoming Creative Music Technology programme. To teach on these programmes primarily, but to be willing to contribute to other Faculty programmes as required. 1.2 To provide tutorial support to students on the Popular Music course through the Personal Tutor scheme. 1.3 To maintain professional standing and expertise through a process of continuing personal and subject development through participation in University and Faculty staff development events and through personal self development and scholarly activity. 1.4 To ensure that Health and Safety procedures within classrooms, studio and workshop areas are adhered to. 1.5 To ensure that University and Faculty policies and methodologies for quality assurance are applied 1.6 To undertake assessment of student work and to ensure that University and Faculty policies for the processes and stages of assessment, and the appropriate feedback within stated time constraints, are achieved. 1.7 To assist in student recruitment and in marketing for the Popular Music course. 1.8 To assist in curriculum enhancement activities including international field trips, showcasing student work, organising guest lectures and workshops and work placements. 1.9 To assist in creating networks between the course and industry to add value to the student experience, and to represent the courses in the JAMES network. 1.10 To make a contribution to the research or knowledge transfer profile of the Faculty through publication, conference contributions, and/or exhibition of work. 2. Secondary Functions 2.1 To contribute to the administration of the Faculty. 2.2 To contribute to the development of new undergraduate or postgraduate programmes within the Faculty. 2.3 To contribute, where appropriate, to the knowledge transfer, income generation and consultancy activities of the Faculty. 2.4 To work with collaborative partners (e.g. FE Colleges, international partners) in developing our provision
2.5 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, commensurate with the grade of the post, properly directed by the line manager. Professional Experience as a music producer / recording and mixing engineer Close contacts with professionals in the Music Industry / Creative Sector and an ability to create and maintain professional networks that enhance the course 3 Training Specialist skills In depth knowledge of a range of sound recording technologies including Pro Tools software and AVID control surfaces. Ability to teach audio theory (e.g. Synthesis / Acoustics and Psychoacoustics / Audio Electronics) Extensive knowledge of recording techniques, within studios and live environments Experience with sound production and interaction software (e.g. MAX / Pure Data) Familiarity with postproduction, mastering, studio management Research practice in audio A genuine desire to teach Commitment to pastoral care and the student experience. Proactive in student recruitment and course promotion Able to teach across the curriculum and to deliver specialist options Responsive to opportunities for course development and proactive in such development Good administrative and networking skills 4 Disposition Able to effect change
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Good team player; evidence of collaboration in current role *(Ref University Policy on Staff Participation in the PGCAP) Subject to the specific circumstances listed above, it is a condition of employment that all newly appointed staff on Academic Staff Contracts with fewer than three years experience of teaching in Higher Education, and not already possessing a teaching in Higher Education qualification, should acquire the University Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCAP). Instead of undertaking the PGCAP Staff with the equivalent of a minimum of two years full time teaching experience in higher education may seek the agreement of their line manager to apply for membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) after they have taught for the equivalent of one year full time at the University. Staff who are employed on a fixed term contract (FTC) which is less than three years will not be required to undertake the PGCAP. However, staff on a FTC of more than one year will be entitled to undertake the PGCAP whilst in employment.
