1 General introduction to the programme This programme has been designed for producers and music creators who are preparing for a career in the popular music industry, or who wish to undertake further study in higher education. You will have the opportunity to develop both production and composition skills linked with the running of an independent record label. Whilst primarily focused on music production within the computer domain, the programme also gives students a firm foundation of knowledge in specialist creative and technical fields within the music industry. Emphasis will be placed upon practical work, analysis, critical thinking and personal development. 2 What are the aims of the programme? The programme aims to enable you to develop a wide variety of production skills and understanding, supported by the development of music creation skills through varied compositional techniques. Central to the programme will be the running of an in-house record label. 3 What should you achieve at the end of the programme? By the end of the programme you will have developed the practical computer music production skills and key academic knowledge required to pursue a career as a producer, songwriter or media composer in the music industry or enable progression to further study. You will develop your ability in composition and production through practical application enabling you to develop individual expression through the creation of new works of music designed for national release. The programme will focus on key skills needed for computer music production and will not give you an in-depth knowledge of a hardware based studio set-up. 4 What will you study? The Music Production Curriculum has a core that focuses on preparation, process and production in computer music production, computer music composition and the job of a producer. Specific modules are focused on production skills, music composition, business structures and production analysis. You will create a varied portfolio of original compositions and productions with the aim of release on the in-house record label. 5 How will you be taught? You will learn through a variety of taught sessions, project sessions and self directed study. Most modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, classroom based activity, project collaboration and computer based activities both supported and self directed. 3

6 How will you be assessed? You will be assessed through production assessment, written reflection, written assignments, coursework, live performance, presentations and computer-related project work. Formative assessment will be included throughout the programme while each module will include at least one summative assessment. An assessment schedule will be published at the beginning of the academic year outlining assessment for each module. 7 What are the entry requirements? East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University encourage and welcome applications from all students with the potential to succeed on this Programme. Applications are considered individually and we take into account academic qualifications in addition to paying great attention to the personal statement and the reference(s) provided with the application. An offer of a place on the Higher National Certificate is offered in terms of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. For example, a typical offer for entry to an HNC is 120 UCAS tariff points. In order to meet this entry requirement an applicant would, for example, need to have gained two A-levels at Grade D or above OR achieved PPP for a BTEC National Diploma OR MP for a BTEC National Certificate. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education programme will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to a Higher National Certificate. At Interview, you will be required to present at least two pieces of recorded music that show a satisfactory level of production skill and a knowledge of computerbased digital audio workstations. 8 How should you apply and how will you be selected? Applications should be submitted through UCAS using the following codes: Institution code name: CANCC Institution code: C10 Campus code: T Music Production (HNC/MusPro), Course code 003W. 9 Where will you be taught? The programme will be taught at the Broadstairs Campus of East Kent College with access to additional learning resources (Library and IT) at the Broadstairs Campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. 10 How long will you normally need to study to complete this programme? This Programme is a 12-month programme. Study takes place over 30 weeks. This Programme is linked to the Creative Music Technology Programme delivered at Canterbury Christ Church University, where you will have an opportunity to join at level 5 upon successful completion of the HNC programme. 4

11 Does the programme feature progression between levels or stages, and if so, what will you need to achieve to progress from one level or stage to the next? Not applicable 12 What will you need to achieve in order to graduate and how will your overall grade be calculated? You will be required to pass every module. The programme uses a rising profile of assessment that identifies the overall grade from a combination of the outcomes of the assessment elements. You will be graded for each item of assessment you undertake, the results of each assessment will count towards your overall grade for each module. Classification is based on the average of the marks of the best 100 credits at Level 4 will be used 70%-100% Distinction; 60% - 69%, Merit; 40%-59% Pass. 13 Are there any external bodies involved in the development and approval of the programme? None 5

PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION PART TWO: FOR THE UNIVERSITY 1 Programme rationale This programme has been designed for producers and music creators who are preparing for a career in the popular music industry, or who wish to undertake further study in higher education. Students will have the opportunity to develop both production and composition skills linked with the running of an independent record label. Whilst primarily focused on music production within the computer domain, the programme also gives students a firm foundation of knowledge in specialist creative and technical fields within the music industry. Emphasis will be placed upon practical work, reflection, critical thinking and personal development. 2 Aims of the programme The programme aims to enable the students to develop a wide variety of production skills and understanding, supported by the development of music creation skills through varied compositional techniques. Central to the programme will be the running of an in-house record label. Students may Progress to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in popular music, or a related area. The programme will focus on key skills needed for computer-based music production and will not give students an in depth knowledge of a hardware based studio set-up. 3 Programme Learning Outcomes The following specific Programme Learning Outcomes have been devised with reference to the HNC generic learning outcomes. 3a Programme Learning Outcomes [HNC in Music production] On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the underpinning knowledge and practical production skills required to pursue a successful career as a producer or music creator in the music industry 2. Apply theoretical understanding to the development of their practical activity within the subject area 3. Reflect on their production skills in order to identify areas for further development 4. Use composition techniques to create music in the computer domain 4 Programme Structure For each iteration of the programme the Programme Director will ensure all students complete the modules as listed below. 6

Modules Level and credit value: Computer Music Composition Level 4 Credit 20 Computer Music Production Level 4 Credit 20 Production in Context Level 4 Credit 20 The Music Industry Entrepreneur Level 4 Credit 20 Production Analysis Level 4 Credit 20 Music for Media Level 4 Credit 20 5 Accreditation of Prior Learning APL will be undertaken in accordance with the University regulations. 6 Entry requirements and selection, application and admission arrangements in addition to standard University requirements East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University encourage and welcome applications from all students with the potential to succeed on this programme. At Interview, students will be required to present at least two pieces of recorded music that show a satisfactory level of production skill and a knowledge of computer based digital audio workstations. 7 Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy The emphasis of this programme is on creating music focusing on popular music composition and production. The delivery strategy will enable students to reflect upon their productions integrating theory and practice into a coherent learning development process. Students will be assessed through coursework, both formative and summative assessment and production related project work. Modules allowing students to progress in the knowledge of Apple Logic will be frontloaded at the beginning of the programme to allow students to apply the knowledge gained to related modules. Teaching strategies will include lecture, application of practical work, group work, peer assessment and research based learning. The Programme uses a rising profile of assessment (see Appendix 3.3) that identifies the overall grade from a combination of the outcomes of the assessment elements. Students will be graded for each item of assessment they undertake, the results of each assessment will count towards your overall grade for each module. 7

See the Appendices. The assessment process is underpinned by a detailed indicative assessment profile included in each module. Assessment methods will take a variety of forms, each relevant to the learning outcomes associated with the given module, and enabling students to engage with theoretical and practical approaches to the module content. The range of assessments, both formative and summative also balances a focus on the products of practical work (audio productions), as well as the process of creating the work (reflections on practical work, performance, presentations.). Coursework will include text-based assignments (including research-based essays and reflections on practical work), as well as practical submissions in the form of audio productions and videos responding to specific briefs. Presentations, both in 'tutorial' style videos and in-class seminars, will also be used to assess practical skills (Production Analysis) and project-based work (The Music Industry Entrepreneur). There will be one live performance assessment (Computer Music Production), again, responding to a specific brief. Students will have an opportunity to commercially release practical work of sufficient quality through the in-house record label via a digital distributor. An assessment schedule will be published at the beginning of the academic year outlining assessment for each module. The ethos of the programme is to provide brief-based assessment with assessment content and structure aimed towards the building of professional skills. 8 Programme-specific student support and guidance Students can access general study support and support for additional/specific learning needs via the College s Student Central and via the University s i-zone. The College will make available individual and/or small group support for study skills including academic writing. HNC students will also have a weekly programme of individual and small group tutorial sessions provided by the Personal Tutor and/or Programme Director in order to support and monitor student progress. The purpose of the tutorial provision is to: ensure effective communication between staff and student; provide a systematic review of student progress; support the resolution of personal issues affecting academic work either through advice and guidance or through referral to the most appropriate member of the College s Student Support Team; encourage onward progression to employment or university (level 5). The College (HE Programme Directors and Student Support Services) will work closely with University staff, including the University s Outreach and Partnerships Team, and the Academic Link Tutor, in order to create opportunities for HNC students such as workshops, master classes and talks - to support onward student progression to higher levels of study at the University. Support workers will be provided to meet a student s specific needs if evidence is provided. 8

9 Work-Based Learning / Distance Learning / Placement Arrangements (if any) Not applicable. 10 Collaborative Arrangements (if any) The programme is to be delivered by East Kent College in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University. East Kent College is a partner college of the University and this collaborative arrangement will operate in line with the University s requirements on collaborative provision. The collaborative arrangements are governed by a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with operational arrangements set out in an Operational Annex to the MoA. A key role within these arrangements is that of the Academic Link Tutor appointed by the University from the relevant subject department. The Academic Link Tutor will provide oversight of programme management including, for example, student registration, curriculum planning, assessment and academic administration in preparation for the end-of-year examination board. This Programme is linked to the BSc (Hons) Creative Music Technology Programme delivered at Canterbury Christ Church University, where students have an opportunity to join at level 5 upon successful completion of the HNC programme. 11 Programme Management The Programme is managed by a Programme Director, who co-ordinates the work of the programme team and oversees all aspects of delivery.
