Curriculum Overview Introduction to Business & Management Every career in this world IS a BUSINESS; therefore; the more students know about business, the greater their understanding will be of how the business world works. This class is for students interested in business and who have a desire to understand how business works in today's global economy. This course prepares students with basic business knowledge and technical skills that will be used regularly throughout their lives. Career development, including critical workplace skills, and life beyond graduation are emphasized. This course will provide students with practical business applications by using hands-on projects that will give students the opportunity to acquire basic skills using Google Drive, including Google Documents and Google Presentations, and how to share work in collaborative teams. Students will also learn Microsoft Office, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheet, Access databases, and PowerPoint presentations. This course is the first course in either a 2-year sequence for business management courses or a 3-year sequence for accounting courses: Introduction to Business & Management & Advanced Business Management OR Accounting 1 Beginning Accounting and Accounting 2 Intermediate Accounting Advanced Business Management and Accounting 1 & 2 students are considered Dual Enrolled students with Yavapai College (YC) and receive FREE college credits after completing the courses successfully with a grade of C or better. Introduction to Business & Management students may receive free YC credits if they attend YC within 2 years of graduation and complete the class with a grade of C or better. Introduction to Business & Management YC credits are considered Articulated credits. The Business Management and Accounting Programs of Study are Mountain Institute JTED Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and were created in order for students to be competitive in today s highly skilled workforce. These programs also prepare students for future educational and career opportunities, including laying a foundation for university majors in business, economics, finance, accounting and marketing. Grading Procedures Student quarter grades are based on total points for a 9-week grading period and semester grades are based on a 40% (1st quarter) + 40% (2nd quarter) + 20% (final exam) formula. The grading scale is as follows: 100-90 = A = Excellent 89-80 = B = Achievement above average 79-70 = C = Average 69-60 = D = Below average work bordering on failure 59 0 = F = Failure/unsatisfactory if student earns a failing grade at semester, he/she will be dropped from the class for 2nd semester. EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! Possession or use of personal electronic devices by students is permitted provided that they do not disrupt the educational process. Electronic devices include cell phones, ipods, tablets, laptops, Kindles, etc. Devices are to be kept in off position while in classrooms unless specifically instructed by the teacher and may be confiscated if disrupting student learning. Use of electronics must be in accordance with school policies. Unwanted photos of other students, teachers, or staff is a violation of the privacy rights of individuals and can result in disciplinary action. School staff is not liable for loss or theft of devices. Bring at own risk! Future Business Leaders of America FBLA is the premier organization for students preparing for careers in business. It is the largest student business organization in the world with more than a quarter of a million members. FBLA prepares students for real world professional experiences. Students will have the opportunity to become a member of FBLA and activities will be incorporated into coursework. If a staff member asks to see a student s ID, then the student is to respectfully show it. The handbook is also a useful resource for various Prescott High School information and procedures. The state of Arizona has a law that benefits taxpayers and students alike. A.R.S. 43-1089 allows a tax credit of $200.00 for individuals, and $400.00 for married couples filing jointly, for fees or donations paid to a public school in support of extracurricular activities. The beauty of the tax credit is that it costs you nothing, gives you a say in how your tax dollars are spent and reduces your tax bill by whatever amount you donate. If you donate $400.00, your Arizona state tax bill may also be reduced by $400.00. Check with your tax expert for any tax advice. Tardy, Attendance, Make-up/Late Work Policies, Supplies SCHOOL-WIDE Tardy Policy A student will be considered tardy to class if they are not in his/her assigned seat as the tardy bell rings. A signed pass or email from a teacher or staff member will be the ONLY instrument used for an excused tardy notes, emails, or phone calls from parents/guardians will NOT excuse a student tardy. Below are the disciplinary actions that will be enforced by Ms. Dreher regarding excessive student tardiness: 1st/2nd/3rd offense Verbal Warning 4th lunch detention with teacher Over 4 violations of tardiness is deemed chronic tardiness and will result in the discipline issue being turned over to school Administration. Also, as a natural consequence for being tardy, student will not be allowed to turn in any homework from the night before (which is always due at the beginning of class) which will result in a zero for the assignment, AND, student will receive a zero for any bellwork activity assigned at the beginning of class for that day. Per Prescott Unified School Board Procedure (October 1997 PUSD Board) a student is considered to have an unexcused absence from a class period if he/she arrives ten (10) minutes or later to class. **Tardies and absences are recorded into Power School within the first 10 minutes of each class period. If you are on time to class, tardy consequences will not be an issue! ATTENDANCE/MAKE-UP WORK For each excused absence, students will be allowed one day plus the number of days absent to turn in work or make-up tests. If absences are unexcused, students may not make-up work for a grade. Any previously assigned work is expected on the due date or on the day returning from an absence!!!!! It is the student s responsibility to inquire and look on the homework website about missed work and make arrangements to make-up assignments upon returning to class. LATE WORK Work not turned in at the BEGINNING of class on the day the assignment is due is considered LATE WORK. Late work will only be accepted at the beginning of class the very next time the class meets. The maximum amount of credit available for late work is 50% (half) of the total points the assignment is worth. Electronic Information Services (EIS) All students and parents/guardians are required to adhere to the EIS policies located in the Student Handbook, pages 33-34. Any user who violates the provisions of this agreement may be subject to disciplinary action consistent with the severity of the violation and may include: Verbal warning Temporary EIS access revocation Suspension/Permanent access revocation Referral to legal authorities for illegal activities Imposition of monetary damages ABSOLUTE NO NO! Cheating/Plagiarism will result in a zero and possible further disciplinary actions. The equipment in this room shall only be used for Career & Technical Education coursework and projects. REQUIRED CLASSROOM MATERIALS These materials are dedicated for THIS course ONLY and should be brought to class EVERYDAY! 1 1/2-2 inch 3-ring binder Binder dividers We will be building our notebook as the year progresses. You will be required to have dividers for each unit. By the end of the school year we will cover curriculum for up to 10 units of instruction. I have many old dividers students may have. Dividers may also be very simple such as sticky notes, colored paper, construction paper, etc. Notebook paper Black or blue pen AND pencil everyday SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: Computers will be used for educational purposes only. Playing of computer games will NOT be allowed! Absolutely NO food, drink or gum in rooms with computers at PHS. DRESS CODE outlined in student handbook will be strictly enforced. RESPECT of room items, equipment, people and their property is expected at all times. Teacher is NOT liable for lost or stolen items left in the classroom, including electronic devices or sports equipment.
