1 Psychology I and II Ms. Dolenko Syllabus, Rules, and Class Guidelines monica.dolenko@gilbertschools.net or msdolenko@gmail.com Class Website: Course Description: To acquaint students with basic principles, methods and fields of psychology, such as biology and behavior, sensation and perception, consciousness, learning, memory, language, personality types, gender roles and psychological disorders. This course is aligned with the American Psychological Associations curriculum for high school psychology classes. As such, some of the content in the course is for mature students. This course is also taught in alignment with the Arizona University s and the community college s curriculum and approach to psychology as a science. This course is demanding and students will need to approach the class with a commitment to do well. Students will need to be able to access the course website to do assignments for class and take tests as well. Point Distribution: Participation/Classwork 15% Test Study Guides 25% Tests/Quizzes 25% Projects/Presentations 15% Final Exam 20% Participation In order to make sure each student respects others views and opinions, Participation Points are given to each student to reinforce positive behavior. This course contains college level material, which will have mature discussions on serious topics. Class participation is very important to the understanding of the material in the course, failure to participate will result in a loss of points. Points may be taken away for tardies and inappropriate behavior. Proper behavior includes not being on a cell phone and being engaged in the class discussions. More serious behaviors will result in a phone call home and/or referral. Tests There will be five tests that will be multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. These are done through Socrative Student which can be downloaded onto a cell phone or completed online. These will be done at home and in the classroom due to the length of the tests and to allow students to improve their scores. Classwork Classwork consists of questions on the course website for each unit. These questions are aligned with the presentations given in class and the text on the website. The questions are also aligned to test questions. Failure to do the questions will result in a loss of points. The psychology calendar on the course website will have the due dates for the questions. Projects Projects are assigned to enhance the understanding of the material covered in class. Failure to do these projects can hurt your overall grade. A rubric for each project will be distributed with the project assignment. Final Exam The final exam will be over the material covered in class constituting 20% of the overall grade. Absences and Tardies: Any student who accrues ten or more absences in any class may see an "INC" as their grade at marking periods until work is made up. Any student who accrues ten or more absences any in any class will be placed on

2 academic probation with the possibility of losing credit for that class. Only excused absences, chronic ill, and other situations known to administration will be able to make-up missed assignments. It is also imperative that you come to class on time. After 5 unexcused tardies, a call will be made to parents. If the tardies continue a referral will be sent to the administrators. Tardy students will also be unable to earn points for the daily questions. These are worth 5 points a day (25 points a week). These points add up quickly so don t put yourself in a situation where your grade suffers because you cannot get to class on time. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO BE ON TIME AND IN YOUR SEAT WHEN THE BELL RINGS, NO EXCEPTIONS. Make-up Policy: You may have as many days as you were gone (or at least within that week) to make-up any assignments (this applies only to excused absences). Tests must be made up within a week of the absence. Failure to makeup the test within that timeline will result in a zero grade for the test. You must make an appointment with me to take the test, if an appointment is made and you do not show up, this will result in a zero unless you come see me before the appointment to cancel. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for the assignment and test given that day. My Office Hours: If you need my help, please come see me I am more than willing to work with you. I arrive on campus by 7 am every day. Some days I will have meetings so if you are planning to come in the morning please check with me the day before so I don t miss you. I am also on campus every day after school from 2:30 until at least 3 pm or later. Please talk to me before coming to see me after school as I may not be in my classroom. I am available during JCT periods for help or to complete make-up work. Please plan ahead and request a pass before the JCT period. Classroom Rules: NUMBER ONE RULE - BE RESPECTFUL!!! YOU WILL RECEIVE A WARNING OR A REFERRAL DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY OF THE SITUATION. First offense: I will talk to you about your behavior and how we can best work to change the behavior Second offense: You will fill out a behavior response form and a call home will occur. Third offense: A referral will be completed. Materials Needed: Three subject spiral notebook (this should last the entire year if you are enrolled in Psy I and II). The class does not use a textbook so access to the internet is required. Each student will need to create a gmail account with an address consisting of the student's first name.last name@gmail.com Student s will put written work in a Google file created for their class by me on Google Drive. Students will need access to Socrative Student for testing on Google Play or in the Apple App Store. It is also available online for standard computer use. To access the test the class room is Dolenko2203 Pen or pencil, every day. I may have a few that students may borrow but I will not be purchasing them throughout the year for students.

3 Contacting the Teacher If you need to reach me for any reason you can me at or I check both addresses regularly. I do not have a prep hour so if a student needs to meet with me, please make an appointment with me for before or after school. I am also available to assist your student during JCT. I have set up a Twitter account were I will post interesting finds on the internet, reminders, and information relevant to the class. As I teach two different courses, the posts are indicated with PSY for this course. You are welcome to follow me on this account at any time. The calendar provided on the website is where you will find the information on what we are doing in class each day. Assignment due dates will be listed there as well as all the activities we are doing in class. Please check the calendar if you miss a day of school for your makeup work. Students will need a password to access the website contents for the course. This password will be distributed to them on the first day of school as well as being posted on the calendar for August 5, 2015 should they forget. The website is the property of the teacher and is still under construction. So there will be times when the website will do down for maintenance. Students will be advised of these times through Twitter and in class.

4 Cell Phone Policy: ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES IN THE CLASSROOM!!! All cell phones are to be kept on silent or turned off. Students will be asked to put them in their bag which be placed at the back of the classroom. Putting the phone in your pocket does not count in my class. Your phone should never be on your desk or visible. There will be times when a cell phone is allowed for use in the class. These times will be clearly indicated on the board at the front of the room. Please review the GPS School District Policy on Cell Phones below. 7. Electronic Devices Including Cell Phones: All students are discouraged from bringing electronic devices to school. At the high schools, electronic devices are to be turned off during instructional time. This includes use in hallways, restrooms, and all common areas during instructional time. Students are to keep their electronic devices in backpacks, purses, or pockets during each instructional period. Electronic devices will be confiscated from any student found to be out of compliance with this policy. Any inappropriate use of electronic devices, including, but not limited to, inappropriate photographs, text messaging, audio or video recordings, will result in the confiscation and search of the device until the completion of the disciplinary investigation and consequences, including possible police involvement. Gilbert Public Schools and its employees are not responsible for any damage, loss, or stolen electronic devices nor will school personnel time be used to conduct searches or investigate the incident. Students may use school electronic devices during instructional time with staff permission %20.pdf Should you not follow my cell phone policy about appropriate use times the following consequences will be applied in this order 1. Warning to student verbally in class at the time of the incident. 2. Call/ home to parents detailing the improper use of the phone in class. 3. Referral sent to the office for failure to comply with the cell phone policy. If you need to reach your student during class times, the school office will get your call or message through to the student without disrupting the class. For my students who work, your boss should never be calling you during class times. It is a violation of the law to disrupt your learning. You are not a CEO and you do have to not answer their calls. By signing below you are indicating that you understand and agree to the cell phone policy. Parent Signature Date Student Signature Date
