Teacher s Name: Casey N. Turnbaugh Casey.Turnbaugh@dcsdk12.org Course Title: Spanish I Periods 4 and 5 Dear Parents and Students, DCHS Spanish 1 Course Syllabus Bienvenidos! Spanish is your ticket to the world. That s right the WORLD. The ability to communicate in a foreign language is a fabulous thing! When you speak a different language, you can travel to places you have only read about, the globe becomes your job market, and you can communicate with people Whose lives are completely different from yours! Together, we will journey through lots of vocabulary and grammar topics, take a rest stop at interesting cultural topics, as well as SPEAK, READ, and WRITE lots of Spanish! In between, I hope you all learn a little bit about life along the way. What is the destination for the adventure? The destination, or objectives, for our journey are consistent with the Foreign Language Standards for Colorado. These standards are embedded in all classes at all levels. This course offers you the opportunity to meet Colorado Foreign Language Standards by showing real life proof of competency in five skill areas: Listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural knowledge. I am excited to have you in my class this year. Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a graduate of Highlands Ranch High School, and I received my Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University of Idaho. I have a beautiful wife, two sons, a little girl and a baby boy that will be born in December of this year. Course Outline: This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. It is taught through the skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will learn to understand the Spanish language as it is spoken at a basic level and to communicate with simple verbal or written responses. Spanish sounds will be learned through imitation. Basic grammar and sentence structure will be taught in basic, everyday vocabulary. Basic cultural themes of the Spanish-speaking world will be introduced and interspersed through the course.

Materials Needed: 1) A 1 subject college ruled, or wide ruled spiral notebook. This will be used for your cuaderno interactivo. Interactive notebook. 2) 3) 3 to 5 dry erase markers. Must bring to class every day. 4) Paper 5) Pencil/Pen (blue or black ink only) 6) Red pen for making corrections. 7) Access to the internet 8) 3x5 index cards (for flashcards) Conduct Expectations: 1) Come to class prepared. 2) Be in your seat and working on LAS FRASES DEL DIA when the bell rings. 3) Be respectful and courteous at all times. 4) Do not disrupt the learning process. Grading Procedure: Grading: Grades serve two purposes in our class. The first purpose is to ensure that you are truly understanding the material by meeting objectives. (In other words, did you make it to the destination?) The second is to ensure that I am effectively teaching the material. Learning a new language is a lot like learning math. It is sequential; we cannot move forward in the adventure without mastering basic concepts. The best way to determine this is through testing. Your final semester grade will be weighted: tests/quizzes 20%, homework 10%, interactive notebook 10%, and skill area assessments in reading, writing, listening, and speaking 60% (15% each.) The reason I weight grades is to make sure you are reasonably competent in all five skill areas. Three progress reports will be posted in Infinite Campus (approximately every six weeks) before you receive your final semester grade. Unless specified otherwise, the general grading scale for all assignments, tests, and Quizzes is %=A, 89-80%=B, 79-70%=C, 69-60%=D, 59% and below=f. Cheating and plagiarizing (using on-line translators) on tests and assignments is a serious matter and will result in a zero. I am more than willing to spend time helping you and answering questions so you do not have to resort to dishonest methods. Your grades will be updated every three weeks or so. By using the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus, you and your parents will be able to see how well you are doing in this class and determine if any assignments are missing. If you have any questions or concerns about your grade, please feel free to see me after school or during Huskie Hour.

Homework / Conjuguemos A large portion of your homework this year will be completed using the web site Conjuguemos is a free Internet service that allows Spanish students to practice their vocabulary and verb conjugations and receive immediate feedback. These homework assignments will be sent electronically to my school . You must send the assignments to my school in order to get credit. You cannot print off your score and bring me the paper. If you want credit for the assignment then I must have it in my . While many students have accesses to the Internet at home, at home Internet accesses is not a requirement for this class. Students will be expected to use the school library or computer labs to complete these important homework assignments if they do not have the Internet at home. With are block schedule there is sufficient time for all students to complete all homework assignments. Blog: My blog is a website that you must go to in order to stay updated with the assignments we are doing in class. I update my blog daily. It is a way to make sure you got your assignments for the day, or to see what you missed if you were absent. There is no need to come up to me in class to see what you missed, because it will always be on the blog. Any worksheets, notes, or important links are on the blog as well. If you check the blog daily, you will always be aware of what we are doing in class, and so there is no excuse for you to miss any assignments or notes. This technology is for everyone s benefit and it is a very useful tool to help you be successful and prepared. Once again, you do not need to have the Internet at home. With the block schedule there is plenty of time to use the Internet at the school or public library. If you fall under this category, make sure you plan accordingly and use your time wisely. Make-up Procedure: It is your responsibility to make up work due to an absence! You must check the blog, at turnbaugh.blogspot.com to find out any assignments or notes you have missed. You must get your assignment to me within one day of returning from an absence. You cannot expect to make up work a month or even a week after you were gone. Tardies: DCHS School Wide Tardy Policy Consistent class attendance and punctuality are both critical components for student academic success and application to the world of work. DCHS continues to build upon these attributes to support student growth. Multiple tardies in the same class per semester will result in the following consequences: A student is considered tardy if they are not in their seat when the bell rings! I will follow the school wide tardy policy. 3rd tardy to class 15 minutes detention during Huskie Hour with teacher

4th tardy to class 30 minutes detention during Huskie Hour with teacher 5th tardy to class 60 minutes detention during Huskie Hour with teacher 6th tardy to class Referral to Administration Classroom Policies: 1. Demonstrate academic honesty in all of your class work in the following ways a. Do your own work do not copy assignments or answers (using an online translator does count as plagiarizing) b. Do not allow others to copy your work c. Be truthful about reasons for missing assignments, tests, etc. 1. No one will be allowed to leave the classroom except on an emergency basis. 2. Absolutely no FOOD OR GUM is allowed. Water bottles only. 3. Cell phones must be turned off and may not be answered or used in any way in the class room. If I see a cell phone out in class I reserve the right to confiscate the phone until after school, when the student may pick it up. 4. Do assignments on time and to the very best of your ability. 5. Seek help from the instructor as soon as you find yourself having trouble. Students, this is your first HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT! 1 You and your guardian must read and discuss the syllabus together. After you have done so, you need to go back to my blog and clink on the link that says Students this is your first homework assignment. You will be taken to a Google document called, Señor Turnbaugh You must answer all the questions and supply all the information that it asks for. Both student and guardian must complete their own Electronic Signature, if the student wants to get credit

for this first homework assignment. Don t forget to click the submit button after you have answered all the questions! 2 If you have any questions you must contact me by cell phone or by if you have any questions # casey.turnbaugh@dcsdk12.org
