1 COURSE SYLLABUS FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAM MILLER CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER OBJECTIVE: This course of study provides training for students interested in the automotive technician field. At completion of this training course students should have a firm knowledge base on which to build their talent as an automotive technician. The scope of this program is to provide training sufficient to allow graduates to articulate to a post-secondary automotive training program, or, enter the automotive repair industry with basic, entry-level skills. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Each student will have access to a classroom set of all curriculum materials for this course. There will be work assigned during class time in the form of selected reading, assignment sheets, worksheets, quizzes, unit tests, and job/task sheets. Homework assignments will also be utilized as extended enrichment of the course material. ALL students will be required to complete a comprehensive safety training program. A Discipline Management Plan is in place for the Automotive Technician Training Program, and WILL be followed closely. Students in all the Automotive Technician Training Program courses at MCTC will have the opportunity to complete the SkillsUSA Professional Development Program training. This program provides instruction that will help students develop and hone skills that are vital for employment. Curriculum delivery will involve lecture (utilizing multimedia presentation techniques), demonstration and guided practice in the automotive lab, and independent hands-on practice. GRADING PROCEDURES: All grades earned in the program will be entered into the following categories, and at the percentage listed: 1. Major grades 55%; 2. Minor grades 30%; and, 3. Other 15%. MAKE-UP WORK: Students are responsible for contacting the instructor for work missed during an absence. Secondary students who have excused, unexcused, or pre-arranged unexcused absences will be permitted to make up regular coursework and receive the actual grade earned. Students who miss class due to truancy will be allowed to make up the work; however, a maximum grade of 70 will be recorded for the completed assignment. 2 MATERIALS: Students will be supplied with curriculum materials, but will need to bring 2 (two) 3- ring binders, paper, pens, pencils, and any other materials necessary for daily classroom activities. Students are expected to have all materials with them when they enter the classroom. Safety glasses will be provided to students during training in the automotive lab. If students wish to provide their own safety glasses, the following criteria MUST be met: 1. Safety glasses must meet ANSI standard Z87.1 (this is usually molded in or stamped on the glasses somewhere); 2. Lenses MUST be clear (no tinted or reflective lenses); and, 3. Students will be solely responsible for safety glasses they bring to school. Students will need to provide acceptable work clothing. Acceptable work clothing is as follows: 1. Pants/trousers that are full length (no shorts) and that have a complete hem on the bottom of the leg (no frayed or cut pant legs or hems); 2. Sleeved shirts (long or short, preferably button down style); or, 3. Coverall style work clothes; and, 4. Sturdy work shoes/boots (steel toes are not necessary). Students will be responsible for the care and upkeep or their work clothes. Students will be assigned individual lockers to store their items. Dressing rooms are provided. Repeated failure to have required materials for class or laboratory activities will result in disciplinary action. JEWELRY: Expensive jewelry should be left at home! In an effort to insure the safety of all students in the automotive lab, jewelry should be removed upon entering the lab. This should include earrings, watches, etc. TARDY POLICY: MCTC students are expected to be in the classroom/lab, prepared to work, when the tardy bell rings. All tardies will be addressed by the Assistant Principal. CREDITS: The automotive technician training course credits are as follows: 1. Automotive Technology 2 credits; and, 2. Advanced Automotive Technology 2 credits. 2

3 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: There will be several opportunities for students to participate in activities directly related to the automotive training program. Some of these are: 1. SkillsUSA A national student youth organization for students enrolled in Career and Technical Education programs. Training in employability skills as well as the opportunity to participate in project, technical skills and knowledge, parliamentary procedure, public speaking, and employability skills is available to students. Membership is encouraged for all students, but is completely voluntary, and, dues of $30 are required to join. 2. Ford-AAA Troubleshooting Skills Contest An annual troubleshooting skills contest available for students to try out for. The best team from each state advances to the national event. COURSE MAKEUP: The courses available in the automotive program will be taught in the following order: 1. Automotive Technology Basic level training in all 8 automobile repair areas as identified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Those areas are Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drivetrains and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance. 2. Advanced Automotive Technology Advanced level training in the 8 automobile repair areas. 3
