1 Creative Photography I Instructor: Mr. Ethan Kalebaugh ethan.kalebaugh@ocps.net Phone: x Course Description Students explore the aesthetic foundations of art making using beginning digital photography techniques. Students become familiar with the basic mechanics of a camera, including lens and shutter operation, compositional foundations, printing an image for display, and evaluating a successful photograph. Students will learn about photography as art and how to critique and judge it. Above all, we will be practicing photography using digital cameras and software and exploring just what makes a good photo. The majority of coursework will be practicing creative photography with the class cameras. Students will learn the basics of image editing using Photoshop as well. Class computers will be available for students to use during class, lunch (with a pass) or after school (with an appointment). Course Objectives Introduction to photographic tools and equipment Students will learn about artistic composition Art and photography vocabulary History of photography Basic digital photographic processing Analysis and critique of artistic pieces Materials 4GB or greater SD Memory Card (Preferrably NOT MicroSD w/ Adapter) $25.00 supply dues for consumables and equipment 1 Ream of Printing Paper to be used for handouts (Not required but donations are appreciated) Binder w/ College ruled paper and dividers Photo Submission learn it, love it Students will turn in photos by uploading them to the class website. Aside from first name and last initial of the student, no personal information will be found on this site. Students must turn in a waiver

2 signed by parents/guardians in order to begin posting their photos, per Orange County policy. The site is not open to the public. Photographs posted will be regularly monitored by the teacher, who will have full access to them all. Students themselves must also agree to the terms of use before being able to log in to the system. Grading & Late Work Students will be graded for many different activities including but not limited to the following (with point values) Long term Photo Assignments (200 points) Single Day Photo Assignments (50 points) Worksheets (25 50 points) Artist Research Projects (200 points, once or twice per semester) Quizzes (100 points) Exams (200 points) Given the nature and extended length of time that students are given for most photo assignments, late work will be penalized by 30%. Students will be given EXACTLY one week, no more, to turn in Photo assignments that are late. After that grace period, the assignment will no longer be available for upload to the website unless by special request to the teacher and will only be eligible for half credit. If a student chooses not to complete at least 75% of a photo assignment, that student will not be allowed to leave the classroom for the duration of the next long term photo assignment as well as for any single day photo assignments until then. If a student fails to complete at least 75% of two photo assignments in a row, that student will lose camera privileges and will work from a text book and writing essays daily until I decide that the student can handle the responsibility again. If a student chooses not to turn in work on a regular basis, a parent conference will be set up immediately. Classroom Rules 1. Be Respectful to everyone 2. Be Attentive to whoever is speaking 3. Be Engaged in the activity or lesson, not in your phone or other distractions Discipline Students are given every chance to improve their behavior. Below are the disciplinary steps that will be taken if a student acts out. 1. Verbal Warning 2. Reassigned seating, if related to interactions with those around student 3. Loss of privileges, contact parents 4. Referral, contact parents

3 Class Procedures Beginning of Class Students will find their seat immediately and prepare for class by getting out daily materials. Tardy policy is mandated by the school and will be followed. Students arriving within 6 minutes after the bell do not need a pass but will be marked tardy. After six minutes, students will be required to go to student services. Students will receive a warning for the first tardy and parent contact for the second. Any tardies beyond that will be reported to Dean Lopez, who will handle discipline. During Class Please use the restroom, your locker and the water fountain BEFORE the bell rings for class. Students will not be allowed to leave class during the first or last 5 minutes of class. Students MUST ask permission before taking a bathroom pass. DO NOT JUST LEAVE WITH THE PASS. Stay in your seats until I release you to come and get your cameras. Students may not go into the camera cabinet unless I say otherwise. I will hand cameras out and collect them from you in the last five minutes of class. Always bring your memory card. Always. Students who do not: o Must put away all electronics (headphones out of ears) o Must complete the alternative assignment for the day (usually an essay) o May not just sit and talk at their table or put their heads down Your camera will be considered your pass. You must have your camera in order to leave the room. Leaving the classroom to take photos is a PRIVILEGE. What you do outside reflects on me and on all of your classmates. IF YOU LEAVE THE ROOM WITH A CAMERA, YOU MUST BE TAKING PHOTOS. Any student reported or found to be sitting or doing nothing outside will lose camera privileges for the remainder of the assignment, if not the quarter, and parents may be notified. This class is not hangout time. Also, while outside taking photos, keep in mind that this is a school and you are surrounded by classrooms. Conduct yourselves accordingly, be respectful and quiet in the hallways and DO NOT enter another teacher s room without having obtained previous permission. Students who finish an assignment early MUST continue taking photos to try and improve on the ones that they already have. Practice makes perfect Students may not come back to class early and do nothing. End of Class Students must be back in class at least 5 minutes before the end of the period.

4 Cameras Cameras will be shared between classes, so they may not be taken home Some students may have to share cameras due to limited supply, depending on class size we currently have 34 cameras. Students will be required to sign out a camera to use it each day. Students will be responsible for the care of any equipment they sign out. Students MAY NOT use cell phones in place of the class cameras. Students may use SLR cameras from home, but not point and shoots, for class assignments Supply Dues The supply dues for the class are $25 and are mandatory. This money goes to support the students directly by purchasing consumables such as batteries, flash bulbs and other necessities as well as more permanent equipment such as new cameras, filters, flash equipment, tripods and much, much more. The dues are ONLY payable online, per school mandate. Payments can be submitted to the following link, which can also be found on the class website: Technology Policy Cell phone use will be limited in the classroom. Cell phones may be used for educational purposes or for research. The use of personal technology in my classroom is a privilege, not a right. Students that choose not to work or participate will not be permitted to use phones or other devices. 8 Camera Permission and Syllabus Acknowledgment Acknowledgment of Responsibility By signing below, I, the parent/guardian of, hereby grant permission for (student name) said child to use the equipment of the Creative Photography class at University High School. I understand that I/my child will be held responsible if equipment that is checked out under his/her name is lost, stolen or damaged while in his/her possession.
