1 Computer Graphics Mr. Sralla Fine Arts Department Hazelwood East H.S. Rm. 217 Ph. #: Classroom Guidebook Welcome to Mr. Sralla s Computer Graphics class in room 217. Please check your schedule to make sure that you have the correct period, room, and teacher. This packet is available to you in order to assist you in succeeding in this course. Please read this entire packet. Course Description: Students will apply industry standards to create a variety of art work using multiple graphic images, a variety of fonts and letter types, illustrations, and photo enhancements on MAC-based computers and Adobe programs. They will create, plan, and develop computer graphic projects that will provide them with basic skills and knowledge essential to a career in the graphic arts. Basic drawing skills and working knowledge of the elements and principles of art are essential components in translating ideas into images. (Prerequisite: Art & Design and Drawing 1) Course Rationale: This Computer Graphics course will build a knowledge base in which the student will use higher-level problem solving skills necessary to discover multiple solutions for sets of visual projects while giving the student a desirable ability to work in the ever-changing world of graphic arts and communication. Utilizing and exploring the possibilities of Mac-based computers and Adobe products through this course will afford the student necessary basic level experience to explore a graphic career and prepare them for college level courses. Approved Course Materials and Resources: Student Textbook: Communicating Graphic Design, ($53.95 Student), Davis Publications Classroom Expectations: 1. Be Positive. Please leave Negativity at the door. 2. Be Safe. We want to know we can be here and not have to worry. 3. Be Responsible. We all have to do our part, or else it becomes difficult. 4. Be Respectful. It has to be given. We all will be respectful.

2 Supplies: You are required to have all these items for this course. 1. Pencil bring to class everyday. I lend out pencils(if I have some) 2. A folder or binder to keep important information and assignments. Procedures: 1. Arrive to class on time(on time means inside the wooden double doors in the hallway before the bell stops ringing), prepared, and look over the Learning Targets for the day. Each days Learning Targets will be on the Promethean board so you will always know where to look and what you will be doing for the day. I will also explain the objectives. This is a tool to help you prepare for the class period. So do not ask me what we are doing today, because I will respond with Look at the board. There is no need for wandering around the classroom unless you are getting supplies, sharpening a pencil, turning in work, getting out work, etc. 2. Work on successfully completing the Learning Targets during the class time. 3. There is a clean-up time allotted for the class to make sure the next class doesn t have to work in a messy area. I m sure you don t want to work in a messy area as well, so be respectful and responsible and clean up your area. In addition you will surrender 5 points of your participation grade each time you don t clean up properly/adequately. We will clean up 5 minutes before the bell(10 minutes if we are painting or other materials that require longer clean up). Cleaning up is part of successfully participating in the class. 4. After cleaning up, sit in your seat and wait for dismissal. This means that I will tell you if you can leave. THE BELL DOES NOT DISMISS YOU I DO! The bell merely lets the teacher know when to stop teaching. After I dismiss you, you are free to leave. Discipline Hierarchy: This section explains how behaviors that do not meet the district, school, and my expectations, are handled. 1. If a behavior does not meet the expectations mentioned above, I will give you the choice to change the behavior to meet the expectation. Basically it is a warning. This will be documented, and parent/guardian contact will be made. 2. If the behavior still does not change, it will be documented and you will be issued a detention and your parent/guardian will be notified. If I am unable to reach the listed parent/guardian, the behavior will still be documented and I will continue to contact the listed parent/guardian. *** If the unacceptable behavior persists, the consequence shall increase in severity.*** (This hierarchy does not apply to all behaviors, such as posturing to fight, fighting, etc. Other disciplinary action will be issued as needed. SEE GUIDEBOOK)

3 Tardies: Tardies will be recorded. Students will be permitted an excused tardy by a written/verbal notice from a faculty member. If you are over 5 minutes late to a class you are considered truant. If you are late to school after 7:25 AM you MUST get a check-in slip from the attendance office and bring it the teacher of the current class of the day. If it is marked excused there is no penalty, but if it is marked unexcused it is a tardy. If you arrive over five minutes from the time stamped on the slip you are truant. Absences: If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to obtain work missed from the teacher, a classmate, or Mr Sralla s website. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for getting the information. If absenteeism begins to affect your grade I will contact home. ID Policy: As stated by the Student Parent Handbook and Behavior Guide: All students must wear their school-issued ID during school hours. Student IDs must be worn on the school-issued lanyard around the neck during school hours. The IDs must be worn in the front and must be visible at all times. Students will not deface their IDs (write on ID, put stickers on ID, etc.) Students must present their ID to any faculty when requested. Cell phones and other electronic devices: The use of any UNAUTHORIZED ELECTRONIC DEVICE is prohibited in the building and my class during school hours UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY THE DISTRICT, OR MYSELF. Head phones are allowed only during times the teacher is not instructing or deems it necessary for electronics to be put away. CHARGING DEVICES IS NOT ALLOWED. Grading: The grading scale for this class follows that of the Hazelwood District grading scale: 70% = Summative Assessment (tests, projects, etc) This will always be out of 100 pts 30% = Formative Assessment (worksheets, notebook work, reading assessments, *Daily Production grade, etc) The points will vary from assignment to assignment Daily Production grade Art is a production oriented class, therefore it is essential that you come to class prepared to work with your best possible effort. (Number of points surrendered is at the teachers discretion) Surrender of Points Will Result When: 1) You are not prepared for class(bring all necessary supplies DAILY) 2) You do not work productively all class(you will not have quality work if you are not working productively)

4 3) Not closing up shop properly Late Work: Students who have been absent from the class are will be given the same number of class periods missed to complete the work. Students are expected to use the homework hotline, voice mail, and the Student Information System(SIS) to obtain assignments. Students assigned to in school suspension must have all work issued while they were in ISS upon their return to class. Only 3 assignments will be allowed to be late per quarter. Assignments submitted by the student more than 5 days late will not be accepted. Work Load: The work load for this class will consist of folder/binder assignments, where you will take notes, practice techniques, and complete small assignments. After the necessary notes, technique practices and assignments for a unit, you will be assessed by completing a project which incorporates the knowledge gained from notes, practices, and/or small assignments. Upon the first day a student is enrolled and attends class they will receive a 100% production grade which will count as a Formative Assessment grade at the end of each quarter. This grade can only reduce in points by lack of production not cleaning up, sleeping in class, etc. Lastly you will have a final exam at the end of the semester.
