1 Graphic Design Course: Graphic Design 2 Teacher: Mrs. Kim Gassman kgassman@cfsd16.org Room: Computer lab, House 1 Office Hours: 7:30 AM Fee: $80 payable to the bursar Class Website: Welcome to Graphic Design! Welcome to a new school year at Catalina Foothills High School. I hope you had a fun summer and are ready to learn some great things in graphic design. Having worked as a graphic designer for 30 years, I have quite a bit of design experience that I am excited to share with you. My top priority is you. If something is not clear or if you have questions, please ask. My goal is for you to get as much as possible out of this class. You will determine how far you can go. I encourage outside of the box thinking. I hope you will feel comfortable enough to experiment and be creative. I am expecting great things this year and I am excited to see all of the creative ideas you will bring to class. This is a CTE/JTED class. This gives you a variety of opportunities that you can take advantage of. Graphic Design also counts as a fine art credit or an elective credit. By the end of this course, you will have a digital portfolio that can be used if you are applying for a job in the graphic design field or planning on entering an art or design program after high school. This year we will be utilizing our class website. Everyday you should check it for warm-ups, project details and other information I need to communicate to you and your parents. Every week lessons will be archived so if you are absent you can check back to see what we are working on. Expect to be challenged! It is going to be great year! Mrs. Gassman

2 Course Description Graphic Design 2 introduces students to a variety of art techniques and computer software application programs in graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite). Students will learn to use graphic art skills and techniques, word processing, desktop publishing, image editing, and illustration programs to create professional looking layouts. Projects require the use of creative thinking to solve visual communication problems. Advanced students are expected to personalize projects, challenge themselves and take design risks. What we cover: Illustrator Photoshop In Design Flash Animation Book Cover Design Menu Design Package Design Logo Design Page layout Skateboard Design Students participate in a city-wide design competition call Quick Fires. Quick Fires last for 6 weeks during the spring semester Class Expectations 1. Be productive during the entire class 2. Meet all deadlines. Deadlines are a major part of a graphic designer s job. 3. Participate in class discussions. 4. Produce high quality, presentable pieces. 5. Keep the classroom clean and orderly. Pick up all trash, paper, etc around your area. All chairs are to be pushed back under the tables. 6. Students will be assigned to computers for which they will be responsible if any damages occur or parts go missing. You are expected to be self-motivated, imaginative, and cooperative. Class Procedures Please take care of locker/restroom/drinks and socializing BEFORE you come to class. I expect you to stay in class for the entire period. If you need to leave to use the restroom, you will sign out on the clipboard at the front of the room with the time you left and then sign back in with the time you have returned. Write down the daily learning goal in your sketchbook (It will always be written on the board.) This will let you know what you are expected to get out of the day s lesson. Sometimes the learning goal will be the same for a few days. You only need to write it down once. Graphic Design

3 Check the class website for daily warm-ups. These will vary from day to day. Do the warm-up in your sketchbook. There will be sketchbook checks from time to time, which are worth points. GRADING I want to see every student be successful in this class. Being on time, working hard in class and completing assignments on time will contribute to your success. Your grade will consist of a combination of summative assessments worth 70%, a midterm and final exam worth 20%, and an employability skills grade worth 10%. You will also see a formative assessment category and a personal responsibility category. Formative assessments: These assessments inform you of your progress towards learning goals. They will help you to know what you need to study/practice in preparation for mastering concepts and skills. They will also help you to prepare for summative assessments. Although these assignments and assessments are essential for academic growth, they will be weighted as 0 in the gradebook as they are meant to inform you and me of progress, not to report on mastery. Summative assessments: These assessments give you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding during and at the end of a semester. These assessments make up 70% your academic grade. Personality Responsibility Grade: This score will reflect class participation, work completion/effort, behavior/conduct, teamwork, leadership and self-direction. These assessments are not a part of your academic grade but are essential for success in graphic design. EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS GRADE Let s discuss the employability skills grade. This is a CTE/JTED (Career, technology education) class; students are expected to conduct themselves in professional manner. Your behavior in class is expected to be the same as if you were working in a design studio. Inappropriate language, not being on time, playing games, looking at blogs or anything not related to the assignment will not be tolerated. This has nothing to do with doing what is asked on an assignment. That is graded when I grade the project. If you finish something early, I have plenty of tutorials that will build your Photoshop skills. Nobody is an expert. Employability Skills grade is worth 10% of your final grade. Employability skills are part of the CTE curriculum and therefore the points count. These points are designed to reward the effort you put forth everyday regardless of your skill level. Rubrics are used to assess your work. You will always know what an A looks like through examples. Criteria for each project will be clearly stated so that you will know what is expected. Attendance Policy: Absences - It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Ask one of your classmates for the daily warm-up and learning goals. Check the class website. Daily lessons will be archived so you can access them at any time. Handouts will be on the front table. You can always come and ask me for anything else you may need to know. Computer Lab Rules: THESE RULES ARE DISTRICT POLICIES AND MONITORED BY THE ADMINISTRATION, TECH SUPPORT AND TEACHER All work should be assignment related No DRINKS except water. The container must have a screw on lid and be kept on the floor. NO FOOD - We have students with severe nut allergies so we need to be extra cautious. No games, music, or videos (they use up too much bandwidth) No unless it pertains directly to the assignment All websites must be school appropriate and pertain to your assignment Only sign on to your account. NEVER share your password Make sure to follow copyright laws when using images. Always site your sources. Graphic Design

4 Electronics: Cell phone policy; Cell phones must be off and away during class. If you have them out during class, I will take them. 2nd offense: They go to the main office and your parents will need to come and pick them up. Music cannot be played from computers it takes up too much bandwidth. When you are working on a project I sometimes allow IPods or MP3 players. They are not allowed during instruction time. If I see them out during instruction I will take them for the day and you will lose the privilege of listening during work time. Project Content: School appropriate content must be used. No violence, blood, weapons, sexual content, vulgarity, drugs/alcohol references, gang related content. Ask yourself if you would hang this in the principal s office. If in doubt ASK!! Materials List This year I will be providing sketchbooks and flashdrives. You may store both in the classroom. Please make sure to always have your flashdrive and save all of your work to it EVERY DAY! We have had instances of students losing work from a whole semester! Classroom Wish List It anyone is out shopping and would like to donate these items to our class, it would be greatly appreciated. Kleenex Hand Sanitizer Anti-bacterial wipes for tables and keyboards. With all of that said.. I am looking forward to a great year with all of you. Please don t hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything. I m always open to help you out.

I understand that part of my grade is based on employabililty skills: being on time, professionalism, behavior, and responsibility. I understand that points can be earned by being on time, putting phone away, using appropriate language, and following teacher directions. I understand that my designs and projects should be school appropriate and positive. I understand that each day I am expected to use the class website for information and updates. I understand that the teacher is not always available to answer questions. Every student deserves her undivided attention and I will try to answer my questions with peers, my notes, internet, or help keys first. I understand I will be using expensive equipment. If I break any equipment, I am responsible to repair or replace the item. I will receive passes to use for restroom/locker visits. I understand that 5 tardies are considered excessive and turned into attendance for follow up consequenses. I understand that CFHS has an attendance policy that is enforced. I understand that if I use a pass and am signed out for more than 10 minutes, my attendance can be changed to absent for misusing privileges. I understand that not being in class for any reason (sports commitments, appointments, illness, etc.) does NOT excuse me from deadlines.i will work from home or come in extra to meet deadlines. I will also let the teacher know beforehand when absences are planned. I will treat other students and the teacher with respect at all times.
