1 Course #6659 Criminal Justice Unionville High School Fall 2013 Teacher: Phone: Mr. Joe Kilpatrick (610) x3168 Course Description: This course introduces students to legal terminology and practices, ethical and criminal issues, how and why laws are passed, juvenile justice, our federal and state court system, forensics, trials, sentencing, our penal system, the death penalty, and law enforcement. Real cases are analyzed through critical thinking exercises and current events are discussed and integrated into the curriculum. The Internet and guest speakers will also be used as a supplement to the course. Level of Course: All students in grades 10, 11 and 12 Classes per cycle: 6 Credits Earned: 0.5 Length of Course: 1 semester Course Materials: Primary Textbook: Street Law: A Course in Practical Law. Glencoe Teacher provided handouts. Materials Required: ring binder 5 dividers Lined loose-leaf paper 1

2 Binder: Divide your binder as listed below. Put a divider in the front of each section and label the divider with the name of the section. Section 1: Administrative Syllabus and any other administrative information you are given. Section 2: Unit Packets You will have a packet for each topic we cover. Open the appropriate topic packet when you enter the classroom. Section 3: Class Work Keep graded and ungraded work in this section in order by date. Section 4: Case Studies: Place in the binder in order by date. Section 5: Additional Notes: These are any notes you are instructed to take and those you choose to take. All notes must have a date. Place in notebook in order by date. *** Label the front or inside cover of your notebook (left side) with the name of this course, your full name, class period and teacher s name. Keep your binder neat and orderly. 4 Classroom management: In order to promote a positive learning environment and meet the goals established by the district mission statement, the following rules have been established. Students are expected to: Maintain and display respect for people and property in the classroom. Arrive to class prepared, on time, and ready for the day s lesson. Follow UHS and class rules & procedures. Leave food and beverages outside of the classroom. Keep cell phones and electronic devices OFF and out of sight. Work only on Criminal Justice related work while in the classroom. Turn in assignments on time. Stay in your seats until dismissed by the teacher. 4

5 Arrival Procedures: When you come into class, put your personal belongings in the designated area, bring out your binder and take your seat. Dismissal Procedures: Please stay in your seat until I dismiss the class. In the event that student behavior warrants teacher intervention, I will take the following steps: 1. The student will receive a verbal warning and / or have a discussion with the teacher. 2. An informative phone call / will be made to the parent/guardian. 3. The administration will be notified and a referral will be issued as mandated in the district discipline code. *** I will use my discretion if I feel the offense is severe enough and will go directly to UHS administration.
