Installng 5 6 7 Before you can use Penfrend XP on your computer the frst tme, you need to nstall t. Insert the CD and double clck on My Computer then on your CD drve whch s now called Penfrend XP. Double clck on Install Penfrend XP.ms and follow the nstructons, clckng Next when approprate. If you see a small Open Wth... wndow, cancel t, then double clck on InstMsW.exe on the CD to nstall Mcrosoft Wndows Installer, then repeat step. Do not run InstMsW.exe f you already have Wndows Installer, whch has been ncluded as standard snce Wndows 000. You wll need to enter your nstallaton code letters, whch are wrtten on the sheet suppled n the box. Keep t safe, because the code s your personal proof of ownershp. When the nstaller fnshes, you can use Penfrend XP from the start menu, or read the detaled on-lne help.
Tryng 5t 6out! 7 Penfrend XP helps slow wrters to type, but t s not a word processor tself. 5 6 Launch your normal word processor, for example WordPad, from the start menu or as normal. Launch Penfrend XP from the Start Menu, f you haven t already. If you re not sure, check on the task bar at the bottom so that you only have one copy of Penfrend XP runnng. If ths s your frst tme wth Penfrend XP, go to ts Fle menu, choose Save As, enter your name and clck OK. Penfrend XP needs to record your personal wrtng style to help t mprove, so each ndvdual should have ther own lexcon fle. You can start t by double clckng on your lexcon fle. Clck the mouse once n the word processor, so that you are ready to type. Thnk of a sentence! Press the frst letter only, then look n the Penfrend wndow. If you see your frst word, clck on t wth the mouse. Otherwse, type the second letter. Keep typng letter by letter, selectng words from the lst when they appear.
Word 5 6 7 Predcton Penfrend XP predcts the next word you want to wrte, based on what you ve wrtten before and a sophstcated language model. It learns your wrtng style and new vocabulary. You can select the words by pressng the functon key (the F numbers along the top of your keyboard) shown besde each word, or usng the normal numbers near the letters on your keyboard, or n the numerc keypad on the rght. Penfrend XP can speak the predctons, and what you have typed. Read the on-lne help for more detals. You should revew the lst of newly learned words from tme to tme, as explaned later.
Other 5 6 7 Features The on-screen keyboard helps those wth lmted moblty, and dyslexc people can avod the vsual stran of glancng between the real keyboard and screen. Go to the Vew menu n the Penfrend wndow, and choose Keyboard. Move t where t wll not block other wndows. Clck the mouse n your word processor wndow, ready for typng. You can clck on letters on the on-screen keyboard nstead of typng them. Select predctons wth the number keys, or clckng on the words. Drag your mouse across your text, or a web page, and press Ctrl-C to copy t. Penfrend wll start speakng t, dependng on the speech preferences.
Revewng 5 6 7 Lexcons Penfrend XP normally learns words as you type, and stores them for revew. From tme to tme (perhaps once a day ntally), go to the Vew menu n the Penfrend wndow and choose Lexcon. Any unknown words whch have been typed are marked New here. You can choose whether to accept or reject them. To keep one of the words, pont at t, press the rghthand mouse button and choose Approve from the menu. All of the optons are explaned n the on-lne help, on the Vew menu. There are more optons on the Edt menu for dealng wth new words. You can set preferences for mmedately predctng new words f you wsh. New words are often proper nouns, local terms, or spellng mstakes.
Preferences 5 6 7 Go to the Vew menu n the Penfrend wndow and choose Preferences. For most optons, the best choce depends on the user s abltes. The on-lne help has a secton on personalsng the settngs wth suggested combnatons. If you pont at an opton and wat for one second, a tool-tp wll remnd you what t does. The optons are saved n the user s lexcon fle along wth new words and ther wrtng style. Two advanced optons are stored n the computer s regstry. The lexcon s saved when you ext Penfrend XP, or f you choose Save from the menu.
