Benefits of the Associate Degree of Accounting A supportive learning environment. You will learn in small classes and enjoy a high level of direct contact with academic teaching staff. You will develop academic skills required for successful study at TAFE and also at university. Practical and industry-focused study. The program uses workplace situations to build knowledge of the industry. An internship program. In the second year of the program you will undertake an industry internship to give you hands-on work experience in the accounting profession. A flexible tertiary pathway. The Associate Degree of Accounting forms the first two years of the Tertiary Pathway to Accounting. You can complete up to two years of your bachelor degree studies with the Associate Degree of Accounting.* Agreed credit. What will I study In addition to accounting subjects, you will study broader business areas that are essential for your success in a business career management, marketing, economics, law, finance and statistics. You will also learn essential skills for your studies in higher education and for your success in the workplace research, essay writing, teamwork and presenting. Best of all, the associate degree includes a work placement accounting internship which will provide you with the opportunity to apply your learning in the workplace and gain hands-on experience with industry professionals. Program structure To successfully complete the Associate Degree of Accounting students must complete a total of 16 subjects each worth 10 credit points. You may choose to study full time (2 years/4 semesters) or part time (4 years/8 semesters). Flexibility in how, when and where you study How, when and where you complete your study is up to you. This program is offered over two years full-time or four years part-time at various campuses across metropolitan and regional areas of New South Wales. You may choose to graduate with a Diploma of Accounting after the first year, an Associate Degree of Accounting after the second year or you may continue on to one of our partner universities to complete the third year of a bachelor degree. After university graduation you may also choose to do post graduate study and/or an accounting industry professional program. Excel with an internship You ll make the most of your study with the opportunity to apply your learning in a real workplace and gain work experience relevant to the accounting profession through an internship subject. This is also an opportunity for you to establish valuable professional contacts. The internships will be sourced by TAFE NSW and industry partners. Progress to university and enjoy the best of both worlds The Tertiary Pathway to Accounting consists of the two-year TAFE NSW Associate Degree of Accounting followed by enrolment in the third year of a bachelor degree at one of our partner universities (Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University, Macquarie University and University of New England). This partnership means you can enjoy the best of both worlds the benefits of studying at TAFE with the benefits of a university qualification. Associate Degree of Accounting 5

Career opportunities Go higher We have collaborated with our partner universities, CPA Australia and Innovation Business Skills Australia to ensure this pathway addresses the needs of the accounting profession. On successful completion of the Associate Degree of Accounting graduates will be able to work in the accounting profession in positions including: Self-employed bookkeeper (a BAS Agent, if other Tax Practitioners Board requirements are met) Tax accountant (working for a Tax Agent or Practice) Accountant in industry (commerce) Small business accountant Payroll supervisor (with experience) Receivables/Payables supervisor (with experience) The pathway has been endorsed by CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAA) and Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) and provides you with the skills to commence their professional certification programs on completion of your accredited bachelor degree at university, after which you will be qualified for careers in areas such as auditing and insolvency. On a personal level, without TAFE studies I would not have been able to achieve my goals nor had the opportunities to further my career. TAFE NSW has an excellent reputation in the workplace through employers and professional bodies. With the vocational expertise students receive from the teaching staff they are job ready. Graduates are well placed in industry, as they have the necessary skills to get the task completed. This new Tertiary Pathway to Accounting is beneficial for the student. They have two years studying in TAFE NSW where they receive teaching from staff who have practical experience and a proven track record from industry plus entry into the third year of an accounting degree at university. This pathway streamlines the credit determination process from TAFE to university. Adelina Tabila FCPA Director Budget Corrective Services NSW Entry requirements To be eligible for admission to the program, applicants are required to hold, at a minimum, one of the following: NSW HSC (Higher School Certificate) or equivalent a recognised Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) Certificate IV level or above qualification at least one year full-time or equivalent in a degree program at a higher education institution People who do not meet the above educational requirements may seek entry into the Associate Degree of Accounting based on mature age or educational disadvantage such as disrupted schooling, or lack of access to higher education due to remoteness/distance. We encourage you to speak with a Course Coordinator at the campus you would like to study at, and consider making an application. As part of the Tertiary Pathway to Accounting, the Associate Degree of Accounting is designed to help you succeed in your bachelor degree studies. How to apply TAFE NSW recognises that prospective students bring unique experiences, capabilities and qualifications. These will be recognised in the selection process. The application and student selection process involves a number of stages. Visit www.highered.tafensw.edu.au to download an application form and submit this with the required essay as detailed on the form. Successful applicants of the first stage will be interviewed and complete a short numeracy test. Successful applicants at the second stage will then be ranked and offered a place in the program according to their ranked priority order. Associate Degree of Accounting 7

Program fees* The Associate Degree of Accounting consists of 16 subjects, costing $1,150 per subject (except one subject which is $1,100 - AFFIN102A Principles of Economics and Economic Theory in Practice). *Fees as at 2013 and subject to change. This program is supported by the FEE-HELP Loan Scheme. FEE-HELP is part of the Australian government s Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) and assists eligible full fee-paying students to pay for all or part of their tuition costs for certain programs with TAFE NSW. Scholarships There are a limited number of scholarships available at selected campuses for students commencing their studies in 2014.
