2 ADMISSION PATHWAYS There are four pathways for entry into the Associate Degree in Policing Practice: Full-time on campus Sessions 1 and 2 will be studied on campus at the NSW Police College, Goulburn Distance education and full-time study combines two sessions of home-based study (Session 1a and 1b), then distance education students join full-time on campus students for Session 2 at the NSW Police College, Goulburn The Bachelor of Justice Studies (Policing) full-time study at CSU Bathurst Campus for two years, including residential schools at the NSW Police College, then students join full-time on campus students for Session 2 at the NSW Police College, Goulburn RCC (Recognition of Current Competency) i.e. prior policing experience consideration for direct entry into Session 2. Academic Selection, determined by the University 2. The Indigenous Police Recruitment Out West Delivery program helped prepare me for this environment and assisted me in gaining entry to the Associate Degree in Policing Practice. Since commencing full-time study at the Police College, Goulburn, I have not looked back. Each day is an amazing experience both practically and academically, and I am continually impressed by the quality of teaching and learning resources available. Meeting new people and forming lasting relationships has also been invaluable. As I prepare for my future I look forward with anticipation to a rewarding career with the NSW Police Force. 3 Charles Sturt University - your pathway into a career in Policing. Charles Sturt University (CSU) is Australia s major provider of police education at a tertiary level. Around 5,000 students are enrolled in its policing courses every year, studying a wide range of programs including recruit level studies, specialist programs in intelligence and investigations, terrorism and security and related disciplines. The NSW Police Force and CSU s School of Policing Studies have formed a unique partnership to design, develop and deliver tertiary courses in policing. The partnership is an important strategy in the development of ethical and professional police officers in a rapidly changing police and community environment. The resources of both a large residential police college and a responsive and progressive university have been brought together to provide a balanced, innovative service in policing education. Subjects have been designed in extensive consultation with police, the justice community and academics. This ensures subjects are vocationally relevant and up-to-date with the latest issues, producing ethical and professional graduates ready for a rapidly changing police and community environment. PATHWAYS TO STUDY CSU provides two pathways for students seeking to begin a career in policing: Bachelor of Justice Studies (Policing) - Associate Degree in Policing Practice - The Associate Degree in Policing Practice leads the way as the foremost police recruit training program in the world. 4 ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN POLICING PRACTICE (ADPP) CSU s Associate Degree in Policing Practice is an entry course to the NSW Police Force. Policing provides a number of career paths including community policing, investigations, intelligence, specialist and technical operations, and leadership and management. Many of the staff are either former police officers or expert practitioners in policing related disciplines such as communications and ethics. This gives the School of Policing Studies a strong practical teaching focus, and a professional focus to research activities. Students who successfully complete the first phase of study are eligible to apply for employment with the NSW Police Force as Probationary Constables, where their first three years will normally be spent performing general duties in a Local Area Command (LAC). PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE The course is focused on the practical application of the applied skills and knowledge necessary for the modern policing profession. Subjects and activities in communication, physical skills and operational safety, for example, provide students with the opportunity to participate in hands-on training in the practical aspects of policing. Students may be required to participate in scenarios designed to emulate events that often occur during routine police service. FIELD PLACEMENT Field placement forms an integral part of the ADPP. Usually between Sessions 1 and 2 students undertake a field experience placement with a NSW Police Force Local Area Command, which provides insight into the practical application of the theoretical foundations of the course. The placement, arranged by the NSW Police College, Goulburn, requires 80 hours (approximately two weeks) to complete. COURSE STRUCTURE The Associate Degree in Policing Practice is delivered in terms (there are three 14-week sessions per calendar year). The course is offered in two components and is delivered over a number of sessions, depending on the pathway you follow. Session is the term used to explain where you are in the course. For example: a full-time on campus student may start their Session 1 in any of the terms (usually January, May or September) a student studying part-time by distance education may commence their first session (Session 1a) in any of the terms (usually January, May or September). COMPONENT 1: Sessions 1 (1a and 1b) and 2 During Sessions 1 and 2 you are a student of Charles Sturt University. After completion of these sessions you apply for employment with NSW Police Force. Apart from successfully completing your studies you must also satisfy other employment criteria established by the NSW Police Force before commencing employment. For all students, Session 2 is studied full-time at the NSW Police College, Goulburn. COMPONENT 2: Sessions 3, 4 and 5 If you are employed by the NSW Police Force you move to the second component of the course. During this component you are a student of Charles Sturt University and a Probationary Constable with the NSW Police Force. You study by distance education while employed full-time with the NSW Police Force. info.csu

5 ASSOCIATE DEGREE in POLICING PRACTICE Course aims and objectives: The aims of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice are to produce graduates who: at the point of attestation are able to effectively undertake the duties of a Probationary Constable of the NSW Police Force; and at the point of confirmation are able to effectively undertake the duties of a confirmed Constable of the NSW Police Force. The Associate Degree in Policing Practice focuses and builds on the core areas of police work and National Competencies for Police Officers outlined by the APESC (Australian Police Education Standards Council). It aims to improve students capacities in communication and problem-solving, investigation, issues relating to safe custody and alternatives to custody, working with victims, and ethics and accountability. Upon completion of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice, graduates should recognise the social and broader context of policing while understanding the values that guide policing in Australian society. They will be able to critically evaluate their professional practice, and continue to enhance their contribution to policing and society through professional development. While carrying out the duties of a general duties police officer, graduates will have a clear understanding of the ethical standards and accountability expected of police officers. Policing was the career I always wanted to be in, and the Associate Degree in Policing Practice has enabled me to reach my goal. I was lucky enough to receive a CSU scholarship to assist with my costs of living away from home, enabling me to study the course full-time on campus at the NSW Police College in Goulburn. The support offered to you as a student is unreal. Teaching staff are approachable and happy to help with any questions along the way and there are other resources available to help support students with their studies. I m now working as a Probationary Constable and I love the challenge that every day of being a NSW Police Officer brings. I ve just started Session 3 of my studies by distance education and I m settling into a schedule of fitting in the study around the shifts (and the fishing). I have made lifelong friends and the camaraderie is part of what gets you through. It has been an experience I will never forget.
