The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is the nationally regulated entry-level qualification for working in early childhood education and care. The qualification will put you on the path to a career working as an early childhood educator in a centre-based service or family day care, designing and implementing the curriculum that will shape young minds. You will learn how to use a national learning framework, regulations and quality standards to support the education and care of children from birth to school age. You will be able to facilitate play and ensure children's health and safety while supporting their learning and well-being.
2 How will it help my career? The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the minimum qualification you ll need to have to work in early childhood centres, including preschools. Half of the educators at an early childhood service need to have a diplomalevel qualification or above (or be actively working towards) in order for the service to meet regulations. Possible job roles include: centre manager (children's services) children's advisor children's services coordinator child development educator director/manager early childhood educator family day care co-ordinator group/team co-ordinator/leader early childhood program leader (children's services) special needs/inclusive educator What are the entry requirements for this course? Can I continue my studies after this course? Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) must have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Children's Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. You can find more information at Working with children check You ll also need to have the First Aid Certificate (HLTAID004). Because this unit cannot be completed online, it s not included as part of this course. However, you must complete this First Aid Certificate before you can receive the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. In order to complete the First Aid Certificate, you ll need to perform basic life support skills, such as control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing these kinds of basic life support skills, you won t be able to achieve the unit. 3 Can I get credit for my existing skills or qualifications? What level of English language do I need? What will I need to do to complete the course? If you already have skills and knowledge that are relevant to your course, you may be able to apply for credit through articulation, credit transfer or recognition of prior learning. Applying for credit can reduce the amount of time you need to study and get your qualification faster. You can apply to your TAFE NSW Institute when you enrol or as soon as your classes start. All TAFE NSW Online courses require you to meet minimum English language levels before you enrol. Detailed information about meeting these English language levels is available at the TAFE NSW Australia website. To get the most from your course, you should be able to read online material and textbooks, complete written assignments and conduct research independently. Your online study will include webinars (online seminars or meetings), text-based discussions and collaboration. You ll need to undertake different types of online activities and complete assessments for 27 units of competency. Note, though, that the course has 28 units. You ll need to make sure that you complete Unit HLTAID004 separately. The assessments involve quizzes completed during your course work and then activities while on work placement. You ll need to complete a minimum of 240 hours of work placement in a regulated Early Childhood service with children aged 0-5 years. Yes. For most units, you ll need to complete activities at a regulated Early Childhood service with children aged 0-5 years. You can organise this work placement in consultation with the course facilitator once you re ready. In general, you ll need to have a reasonable amount of contact with your facilitator first; you ll be placed once your facilitator feels that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. You ll usually start your work placement towards the end of the qualification.
5 What computer skills and equipment do I need? You ll need basic computer skills to complete the course online. This includes the ability to: access and search the internet use software to create documents create, save and edit documents upload, download and save documents through websites attach and use devices (eg USB flash drive) participate in online discussions. To obtain course material, you ll need access to a computer or other device such as a tablet or mobile phone with reliable internet access. You ll also need access to a computer on which you can install the required software. Software is either supplied or can be downloaded under an open source license. Minimum technical requirements for all TAFE NSW Online courses are listed on the TAFE NSW Online website Will I gain professional recognition when I finish? The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a recognised national qualification.
