Saturday, April 9 Arrive this morning and transfer to the well-located Regent Berlin. In the afternoon, depart for a tour of the former East Berlin s major landmarks, including the Brandenburg Gate; the Tiergarten; Potsdamer Platz, divided by the Berlin Wall until 1989; and the East Side Gallery, where international artists painted a remaining section of the Berlin Wall in 1990. Gather this evening for introductory remarks by your study leader, followed by dinner at the hotel. Sunday, April 10 Attend a morning lecture before exploring the Sammlung Boros, one of Berlin s most treasured private art collections, housed in a former bunker. After a casual lunch at Dada Falafel, visits to artists in their studios have been arranged. Discover the Field of Stelae, the German Holocaust memorial designed by Peter Eisenman. See the subterranean Information Center before continuing to the historic Reichstag, meeting place of the German parliament (Bundestag), which was restored by British architect Norman Foster. A focused look at the art and architecture of the Reichstag is followed by dinner in the rooftop restaurant. Monday, April 11 Today begins on Museum Island. At the Pergamon Museum, view the impressive Altar of Zeus. Discover the iconic bust of Nefertiti and other treasures in the rebuilt Neues Museum. Following lunch, embark on a tour of Jewish Berlin. Visit the Scheunenviertel ( Barn Quarter ) neighborhood, a former center of Eastern European Jewish life that experienced a renaissance after the fall of the Berlin Wall. At the gold-domed New Synagogue, enjoy a guided tour of the permanent exhibition. See the former deportation area on Grosse Hamburger Strasse, and discover the Stolpersteine (or stumbling blocks ) memorials for victims of Nazism. The remainder of the day and dinner are at leisure. Tuesday, April 12 Discover Potsdam, an attractive town that first became a royal seat in the 17th century. Tour the rococo palace of Sanssouci, built by King Frederick the Great as a summer residence, and the splendid Picture Gallery. After a picnic lunch, return to Berlin with a stop at the UNESCO-World Heritage site Hufeisensiedlung ( Horseshoe Estate ), an outstanding example of innovative town planning from the 1920s, closely related to the Bauhaus style. Dinner is at leisure. Wednesday, April 13 POTSDAM / A morning lecture precedes a tour of the Hamburger Bahnhof, a museum of contemporary art. After lunch at leisure, continue to the Berlinische Galerie, one of the newest museums in Berlin, focusing on art dating from 1870 to the present. Later in the afternoon, visit the Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Libeskind and acclaimed for its evocative modern architecture. Tonight attend a special auf Wiedersehen dinner at the hotel. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge. INSURANCE We highly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. An application for insurance will be provided by HAA Travels upon confirmation.
