2 Florence, Italy January 16-28, 2006 Welcome to the Winter Session Culinary Program in Florence. ACCENT works with Coast Community College District to provide an exciting overseas program with extensive overseas support. On the Winter in Florence program, participants live in double occupancy rooms in a hotel while attending five days of culinary classes as well as visiting cultural sites and local food purveyors inside and outside of Florence. In addition to the academic program, the ACCENT Florence Center staff provides support and guidance to all participants. Once you have applied, you will receive detailed application and enrollment forms as well as a student handbook. Application and Enrollment The Winter Session Culinary Program in Florence is open to anyone over 18 at the time of application. Program space is limited. Participants should send in the enclosed application with the $250 non-refundable first payment as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, ACCENT and the Coast Community College District will send you additional application and enrollment forms. Applications must be received by November 7, Beyond November 7, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits. Student Services: The ACCENT Centers ACCENT is a study abroad organization that works with over 50 colleges and universities to provide academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study programs. ACCENT has fully-staffed Centers in Paris, Florence, London, Madrid and Rome that serve as a home base to program participants. The San Francisco Center assists students with enrollment and pre-departure preparation. The staff in all six ACCENT Centers has extensive personal experience in travel and overseas study, and is available to answer questions throughout all phases of the program. The fully staffed ACCENT Florence Center, located in the historic city center near the Piazza del Duomo, serves as a home base to program participants. The ACCENT Center is open during the week for students to access the resource and lending library, use the computer lab, ask questions, collect their mail and take advantage of a variety of other student services. Transferable Academic Credit The Winter Session Culinary Program in Florence is offered for transferable college credit through Orange Coast College, part of the Coast Community College District. The Coast Community College District will provide a transcript upon request for the coursework completed overseas. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply. The Academic Curriculum Students will be enrolled in CA199 (1 unit) Current Issues in Culinary Arts. This course is designed to present current issues and special topics related to the culinary art profession. As part of this class, the students will participate in historical and cultural tours of Florence, Italy, and attend hands-on culinary instruction on regional cuisine. In addition, students will learn about the origin, processing and tasting of wines and olive oil and visit regional markets and cultural events. 3 Cultural Program The Winter Session Culinary Program in Florence includes many exciting and educational visits, excursions and tours. In addition to five days of expert culinary instruction there will be three walking tours of the city; a gastronomic walking tour led by a chef from the Florence Culinary Institute, an art history walking tour led by ACCENT, and a history of the city tour led by a local historian. Also included in the program are two excursions outside of Florence, one to see the market at Montepulciano and to visit with cheesemakers in Pienza and the second to visit Volpaia/Greve to visit the local vineyards and olive orchards. Additionally, program participants will have the opportunity to attend one performance of ballet, opera or classical music. Excursions are chosen based on the academic curriculum and subject to change. Program Faculty photo by Susan Coleman This is the second year Susan Coleman and Barbara Cooper will be leading a culinary program to Europe with ACCENT and CCCD. In 2004 the two led a fall program to Erfurt, Germany and Florence, Italy. In Germany they attended the Culinary Olympics and in Florence they attended cooking classes and toured the beautiful city. Susan Coleman has 30 years of teaching and administrative experience at Orange Coast College. For the past 20 years, Susan has been organizing and leading groups around the globe on cultural learning expeditions. Susan lived in Germany for years and has recently led a group to Cinque Terre, Italy on a walking tour. Susan will supervise the logistics and cultural aspects of the trip in addition to teaching students how to be good travelers and record their experiences. Barbara Cooper has been a full time faculty member in the Hospitality department at Orange Coast College for the last six years teaching operation management and production classes. She has worked at OCC in a number of capacities starting as a Food Service Worker and Steward to serving as General Manager of the Instructional Food Service, managing the cafeteria operation and coordinating the instructional labs for 12 years. This will be Prof. Cooper's 5th culinary adventure. In addition to the 2004 program with Prof. Coleman, in 2000 she lead a 10-day tour of Germany and France with highlight visits to the Culinary Olympics and the Cordon Bleu. Other trips include the 1988 Culinary Olympics and the 1990 Salon Culinaire in Singapore. photo by Susan Coleman Prof. Cooper has completed an A.A. in Food Service Management at OCC, a Bachelors in Business Administration from Cal State University, Long Beach and a Masters degree in Educational Administration from National University. 5 Program Price: $2900 Program Price Includes Double room in two star hotel with breakfast provided daily Five days of culinary classes Two one-day excursions to Montepulciano/Pienza and to Volpaia/ Greve including transportation and entry costs Cultural activity series including one evening ballet, opera or concert performance Three guided themed walking tours of Florence: history, gastronomy, and art Orientation program in Florence Overseas information and resource center with ACCENT Florence on-site staff Transfers from and to the Florence airport for group flight participants Program Price Does Not Include Round-trip airfare (estimated airfare $900 - $1000) Optional $500 single room supplement Meals except as specified Required medical insurance Personal expenses, books, passports, visas, and anything not listed as included Housing Participants may choose to live in double or single rooms in a two star hotel in Florence. Single rooms in the hotel are limited and require a supplement of $500. Breakfast is included daily in the hotel. The hotel is located in the city center, within easy walking distance of all activities. Housing is provided from the first day of the program (January 16, 2006). Payment Schedule Non-refundable first payment $250 Final payment due Nov. 7, 2005 $2650 The payment schedule is the applicant's contractual obligation. Failure to make each payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availability of space and late enrollment fees. All prices and fees reflect exchange rates current as of 2/05 and are subject to change. ACCENT charges a $20 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course of business. CCCD Tuition & Fees Academic credit for this program is awarded by Orange Coast College. A per unit enrollment fee must be paid to OCC at the time of registration. For more information, please contact Barbara Cooper at ext. 7 or Susan Coleman at Transportation All participants must check-in at the program hotel January 16, 2006 between 9am and 5pm (Note: most transatlantic flights arrive one day after their departure date). ACCENT will organize an optional roundtrip group flight from Los Angeles. Group flight participants will be met at the airport in Florence and transferred to their housing. Group flight participants returning to the U.S. on the group return date will receive transportation to the Florence airport. Students enrolled in the Winter Session Culinary Program in Florence will receive detailed flight information approximately four months prior to departure. Estimated airfare $900 - $1000. Cancellations All cancellations must be made in writing to ACCENT and the Coast Community College District and are effective the date of receipt. Participants are liable for payments until written cancellation is received. Cancellation Fees: 70 days or more prior to start of program $ to 69 days prior to start of program $ to 49 days prior to start of program $750 8 to 29 days prior to start of program $ to 7 days prior to start of program No Refund ACCENT, and not the Coast Community College District, is responsible for all travel arrangements and any liability arising therefrom. The Coast Community College District is NOT liable for any damages arising out of the services described herein, including, but not limited to any promises or representations, whether expressed or implied. Nothing contained herein shall be construed to in any way bind the District, the District Governing Board, any of their agents, employees or representatives to any promises, obligations, covenants or duties whether expressed or implied herein. ACCENT is not responsible for the academic segment of the program except as specified in the contract between ACCENT and the Coast Community College District. Nor is ACCENT responsible for airline delays of any kind, or for expenses or loss incurred as a result of such delays. With regard to transportation/travel, regardless of the type of vehicle, ACCENT acts for the passenger as agent only. ACCENT assumes no liability for accident, injury, damage, or loss in any vehicle, or as a result of default by any person or company engaged in transporting the passenger.
