Downloading OverDrive ebooks To Android Devices Updated 3.25.16
DOWNLOADING EBOOKS to an ANDROID DEVICE DOWNLOADING THE OVERDRIVE MEDIA CONSOLE - Go to the Google Play store Type OverDrive in the Search box and install the app The first time you open the OverDrive app you will be prompted to sign up for an OverDrive account. Enter your name and email address and then create a password. OR you can sign up with your Facebook account or your library card Creating an OverDrive account allows you to sync your ebooks across multiple devices. IMPORTANT: If you install the OverDrive app on more than one device, ALWAYS sign into the OverDrive account using the same method.
You will next be prompted to Choose a Library. A side menu will open. Choose + Add a Library Then type in Schaumburg and tap on Search Select Schaumburg Library from the list of options. Tap the star next to MyMediaMall until it turns color. Doing so saves MyMediaMall as your home library. Tap on the words My Media Mall. This will take you to the MyMediaMall page. SIGNING IN - Tap on Sign In (upper right hand corner of the screen)
Select Schaumburg Township District Library from the drop-down menu Enter your Schaumburg Township District Library card number and PIN (your PIN defaults to the month and last two digits of the year you were born e.g. if you were born in May 1980, your PIN would be 0580.) SETTING CHECKOUT LIMITS ebooks default to a 14 day checkout period. You can change the checkout period to 21 days by resetting your default lending options. To do so, tap on your Account at the top of the screen (looks like a silhouette), and then choose Settings For ebook, select 21 days. Tap on Save at the bottom of the page
SEARCHING You can do a quick search in the search box in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but to limit your selections to titles compatible with an Android device, select Advanced Search. The Advanced Search feature pops up when you tap the magnifying glass. You can search for a particular title or author. In addition, you can limit by the date a book was added to the site (between 7 days 1 year), the subject (e.g. Mystery, Romance, Nonfiction), publishers, and awards. The most important search field is All Formats, which allows you to limit to EPUB, which is compatible with the OverDrive app. You can also restrict your search to books that are currently available to check out by clicking the box near the bottom of the page that says show only titles with copies available.
After you do your search, you will see a page of results. If the book is available to check out, the book icon in the upper right corner of the cover will be darkened. If the book icon is grayed out the book is checked out. NOTE: if you see a headphones icon on the book cover, this is an audiobook, not an ebook. WISH LIST: If you are interested in reading a book, but don t want to check it out or put it on hold now, you can add it to your wish list. Tap on the cover of the book. You have several options. Tap the bookmark and it will turn red, which means the book is now on your wish list. PLACING A BOOK ON HOLD: If the ebook you want to read is currently checked out, you can place the book on hold. Tap on the cover of the book you want to place on hold. You will see a page like the one on the right. Tap on Place a Hold. The first time you place a hold, you will be asked to enter your email address. The book defaults to automatically check out to you when it is available. You can uncheck the box if you want to manually check it out. If you choose that option you will have 72 hours from when you are notified by email that the book is available to check it out. If you leave the default to automatically check out, you will receive an email notifying you that it is available. You will sign in to MyMediaMall and then choose Account to get to your Bookshelf to download the book. If you choose to manually check out your book, you will sign in to MyMediaMall, choose Account and then Holds to check out the book.
If you want to see how many people are on hold per copy or read more about the book before placing it on hold, checking it out or putting it on your wish list tap the more arrow. Doing so will open up a page like the one below. CHECKING OUT AN EBOOK When you have decided on a book to check out, tap on the cover. If the book is available to check out, you will see the Borrow button. Tap on the button. The book is then added to your Checkouts page. You are able to check out up to 5 items at one time. From the Download drop-down menu, select the EPUB format. Tap on Confirm & Add to App NOTE: you are able to Return a book from your Checkout page if you have not yet downloaded it. The book will download to the Bookshelf in the app.
READING AN EBOOK To get to the book in the OverDrive app, tap the OverDrive logo in the upper left hand corner of the screen. A side menu opens up. Select Bookshelf from the list of options You will now see any books you have downloaded to the OverDrive app. Tap on the cover of the book and it will open, so you can begin reading. Tap in the center of the book. This will activate menu bars at the top and the bottom of the screen. Tap the Settings icon. This will give you a menu of options to change the font size or style, line spacing, margins, etc. If you close out the OverDrive app, when you reopen you will come back to where you were in the book. There is no need to bookmark it. If you want to return to your bookshelf to read additional books or search for more books on the MyMediaMall site, tap the OverDrive icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. The side menu will appear. Select Bookshelf to see the books you have already downloaded. Select MyMediaMall to go back to search for more books.
RENEWING AN EBOOK If there are no holds on a book, you are able to renew an ebook up to 3 days prior to the expiration date. You will see a renew button next to the title on the Checkouts page in MyMediaMall (under your Account) or in the Renewals tab on that page. You will then be prompted to fill in your email address and you will be added to the holds list. Once the ebook expires, you will receive an email notification that the title is available to retrieve from your Holds page. You will only be allowed to renew this title one time. RETURNING AN EBOOK EARLY IN THE OVERDRIVE APP Press down and hold on the cover of the book in the bookshelf in the OverDrive app, and you will be given the option to Return or Share. Select Return; Confirm that you want to Return the book.
TROUBLESHOOTING If you are having technical problems downloading the ebooks, there are some useful articles and how-to videos on the MyMediaMall page. Click on the? icon, which will open a page of options to assist you. If you continue to have problems, click on the Support link on the Help page. Doing so will open a page listing all the libraries in the MyMediaMall consortium. Choose Schaumburg Township District Library from the list, and an email will open that will be sent to the staff (you may need to choose to open the link in a browser).
