ENERGY SPECIFIC INDUSTRIES FACING A GLOBAL CHALLENGE In the past, for various reasons, the structure of the energy industry appeared to be more stable than that of most other industries. Currently however, important changes are underway. The surge in electricity demand in most countries is certainly the main driving factor, requiring additional investments and new technological solutions in line with environmental constraints, and forcing companies and institutions to adapt their organisation and revise their strategy. In particular, this may be the sign of growing integration of the power, gas and oil industries. Companies that do not anticipate these trends expose themselves to heavy risk. These factors underline the need to develop a comprehensive view of energy issues with more attention to strategy than has traditionally been the case. The energy industry, in many ways, also closely interacts with politics at both national and international levels. In recent years, environmental issues in particular have become increasingly important, whether in the production, the transportation or the use of energy. Nadine BRET-ROUZAUT At the IFP School, Nadine Bret-Rouzaut is the Director of the Petroleum Economics and Management Program, an International Collaborative Program with the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M University, and Gubkin University of Moscow. Øystein NORENG Øystein NORENG is professor of petroleum economics and management at BI Norwegian School of Management. He has a wide experience as a researcher and advisor to international organizations, governments and oil and gas companies. Dr. Noreng is the author of many articles and books, among others Crude Power, London 2002, I.B. Tauris. Surprisingly, professional education in the fields of energy economics, energy management and energy policy has been limited. Competent managerial professionals are scarce. The scarcity is particularly severe in some developing regions, such as Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Russia and the former Soviet republics. Here residential and service sector energy demand is growing quickly. There is an urgent need for more efficient management at both the corporate and government levels of energy issues, and it is our role to offer appropriate programmes to meet this need. Patrick GOUGEON Patrick GOUGEON is a member of the Finance department at ESCP-EAP European School of Management and former Director of MBA programmes. He also served as Director of the School of Management at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand (1990-1993) where programmes and research focused on international technology transfers, project finance and joint ventures. 3

PARTICIPANTS The programme is designed for participants who come from around the world, who have full command of the English language, hold a university-level degree (Bachelor s or equivalent) and who have some work experience. The Master in Energy Management is suitable not only for those familiar with the energy industry but also for participants with no experience in the field who wish to work in the sector. The programme is professionally oriented and designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of key energy issues along with advanced analytical and managerial skills. Its aim is to fill a void by educating managers specifically trained for the energy sector by providing them with updated qualifications and insight into this rapidly changing industry. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Executive MS Energy Management provides candidates with excellent career opportunities, allowing them to access leading positions in energy companies and institutions, public or private. The close contacts between the three schools and the energy industry are a unique asset in this respect. THESIS RESEARCH WORK The thesis requires individual and original research work in close co-operation with a thesis advisor. It provides an opportunity to explore in depth a specific energy topic. The thesis work also provides opportunities to do research in conjunction with the energy industry and thus to prepare for a professional career. The thesis is a group project. Groups of 2 to 4 students will work together on a chosen subject under the supervision of an advisor. The written report will be a collective work, giving 10 credits ECTS, with an individual defence, giving 20 credits. The thesis defence will conclude the research work. CORPORATE SUPPORT Close ties to the energy industry and regulatory authorities enable the three schools to capitalise on advanced position in the energy field. This provides its graduates with an education at the top of the skill's ladder. 5
