MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR FARM TOURS Tour #1 AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGIES & LSU AQUACULTURE RESEARCH STATION TOUR Thursday, February 19, 2015 10:00 6:00 Cost: $105.00 This tour begins with a visit to The Louisiana State University Ag Center s Aquaculture Station. This research facility includes 145 experimental ponds totaling over 100 surface acres of water. Researchers here work on a variety of freshwater and marine fishes and invertebrates as well as a number of other research disciplines within aquaculture. This trip will conclude with a generous crawfish boil complete with seasoned veggies and jambalaya. After this meal we will then travel to Aquaculture Systems Technologies, LLC s facilities in New Orleans. Founded in 1995 by Douglas Drennan, AST is the exclusive manufacturer of Bead Filter Technologies for biological and mechanical filtration. AST is also very involved in the research and development of new technologies to solve problems/issues in the continued evolution of recirculating aquaculture systems. To date AST has received 9 Phase I and 6 Phase II SBIR Grants from NOAA, USDA and NSF. AST occupies a 7,000 sq. ft. building dedicated to manufacturing, and has two 1,800 sq. ft. greenhouses devoted to R&D. Tour #2 MISSISSIPPI MARINE AQUACULTURE Monday, February 23, 2015 8:00 6:00 Cost: $115.00 This tour will depart the Marriott at 8 am and travel to Ocean Springs, MS to visit the University of Southern Mississippi s Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center. Founded in 2006, the Center aims to promote the development of technology for production of commercially and recreationally important marine organisms. Investigations focus on the production of species of economic importance in the Gulf of Mexico region in closed, recirculating systems. The Center is located on a 225-acre site and consists of approximately 100,000 ft2 of culture and research space devoted to live feed, broodstock, hatchery, and nursery/growout systems. On-going projects focus primarily on blue crabs, marine shrimp, spotted seatrout, and red snapper in joint projects with federal and state agencies. The Center s research capabilities include state of the art laboratories conducting research in nutrition, genetics, disease, and reproductive physiology of aquaculture species. Lunch at the world-famous Shed BBQ and Blues Joint in Ocean Springs is included. Following lunch, the tour will travel to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Lyman Aquaculture Center. The Center is located on 280 acres in Harrison County near Gulfport and features 14 lined half-acre ponds and 10 earthen ponds of various sizes. Historical activities focused on culturing freshwater gamefish species such as largemouth bass and centrarchids for stocking, but since 2008 projects involving public and private partnerships have aimed to develop pond-based aquaculture of estuarine and marine species including spotted seatrout, blue crab, Gulf striped bass, and red drum.
